I don't think anyone can succeed there. I'd like to be proven wrong.

Making the NCAA Tourney would be a W there.

If the correct alumni 'take care' of some people, they can get some better recruits.

Plus, bringing a kid to NU and telling him your alumni connections will have you set for life is about as true as you can get in making that promise to a kid. Assuming the kid puts some work in towards his education.

How many quality college BB players can you say this about? I would think very very few.

So they are just dumb jocks, I can't agree with that.

I agree, very few, but they exist, especially those who understand Bball is not going to be a profession for them.

It's a good majority of them. You really think that most of the players at Iowa think they'll be playing in the NBA?

I may be biased as I was close friends with some of the athletic tutors at NU 20+ years ago. And NU was even worse back then.

I don't doubt there are many players who are there just to play and just get by but most players are worried about what they are doing after college just like a normal student. For some, playing professionally is possible. For others, they need the degree.

Absolutely they do. Coaches at St Xavier routinely have players asking them to send their highlights to NFL scouts. Just about every D1 basketball player thinks they will end up playing professionally.

I would too. What is your point?

I think "hope" may be the better word. However, most of them are smart enough to know that they'll need a good backup plan. There are some good opportunities in Europe though.

The point is if kids at NAIA schools think they can play in the NFL, what do you think players at a Big Ten school think?

No they are not. If they were the graduation rates would be better all around.

They simply want to take a chance. It's not like it hurts to have them send your tape out. The two things aren't mutually exclusive. Maybe they'll get invited to a tryout or something?

Graduation rates for athletes are in general as good or better than the general student body especially if you don't count transfers.

Of course they don't pay tuition and have people holding their hands on the way to class every morning.

:@: the original question. The grobber had Rick Telander on his show last night at 1:30 AM or so. Telander believes he is out. Couldn't believe grobber got Rick at 1:30 AM to discuss NU, but he did.

Will NU ever upgrade their facilities? From what I've heard, it's beyond embarrassing for a Big 10 school.

Chris Byrd! Jimmy Stack!

Both playground coordinators at Wilmette Junior High during my formative years!

Played many a 20 on 2 games!

Considering their schooling is fully funded for all three semesters per year, that is not a very good number.

It's beyond awful. If you could bring a recruit in and sell him on NU's basketball facilities, then you could sell sand in the desert.

EDIT: I'm speaking relatively, of course. 20 years ago, these facilities could be considered good, but with all the advancements in basketball programs' facilites, NU's stuff looks like a pile of dung.

I got the impression listening to him in the postgame last night following the loss to Iowa, Bill Carmody knows the end is near in Evanston. It sounded like those players know Carmody's days are numbered, too.

What about hiring a stud recruiter to grease some palms and hire Skiles to coach?

Are you just looking for anything to complain about now? Who cares if summer school is paid for?

If the Northwestern football team can play well, I don't see why it can't happen on the basketball floor. Northwestern just has to recruit smart kids who are good at basketball, but know a solid degree from Northwestern will take them further than their dreams of playing in the NBA.

Simply amazing... Carmody had one more year at Northwestern than FDR had as President :?:

I'm a little sick of the myth that BC was a great "X's and O's" guy. That may have been true a decade ago, but the game has changed. He has not had an original offense that was truly effective against the modern day physical Big 10 defenses in a LOOOOONG time. Tell me how his "innovations" served him over the last decade... they haven't. He put band aids on gaping wounds to keep us in games with gimmicky offense. But this only served to keep us out of the cellar.

He had 13 years folks. 13. In a day where Division 1 coaches are measured by weeks, not years, its hard to feel too bad that had tremendous stability in his occupation for well over a decade. He had a MUCH lower bar than any coach in the Big 10. Make it to the tournament. He'll be fine.

I won't miss his "woe is me" antics at courtside. He was not a great mouthpiece for a program. He was not good in front of the camera as the face of the program. He was classy in that he didn't throw his players under the bus, but that's where it begins and ends.

Big 10's worst recruiter. Blame the facilities. Blame the fan support. Blame whatever. But nonetheless, he was absolutely NOT successful relative to his main competition (the other 11 teams in the Big 10). Perhaps you need a guy to sell sand in the desert... Bill Carmody is way too much of a realist to do that.

I'm sure the man is a nice guy (many people have suggested that), but you gotta do what is right for the program. I wish him the best, but I'm certainly glad for a fresh start.

Thad Motta thinks so highly of him, you would think he would hire him immediately.

I used to think highly of Chris Collins. However, the guy is in his 40s and has never taken the initiative to step out from under Coach K's shadow despite not being the internally considered heir to the position. That doesn't seem like the character trait of a program builder.
