Chicago Bulls: Poised to pay the tax for the first time this season, the Bulls might have to do it again next year if they don't make any cost-cutting moves. The team currently has more than $74MM committed to eight players

KC Johnson said more of the same shit lined up for next year. No money to even sign Bellinelli.

Well....I guess that's that for this Bull's team.

Slow clap for Gar/Pax.

Yet, there are guys here who somehow think this team's title window is still open. The Bulls needed to win the title in 2011. It didn't happen. Back to being mediocre.

GarPax did not do the Bulls any favors by failing to avoid debilitating luxury tax problems, but the Bulls are also in basketball hell because they do not have LeBron James or Kevin Durant. I don't see how any team eliminates the Thunder or Heat in a seven game series, unless you pair a bunch of second tier superstars together, like Melo, Chris Paul and someone like James Harden or Dwight Howard. These guys are not LeBron or Durant, but they're that next level star, when paired with similarly talented teammates, can make some noise against teams led by superior players like LeBron or Durant.

Rose is not on the level of Durant or James, so he will need the help of a couple of teammates or are either at his level or better. Even if the Bulls did not have cap problems moving forward, recent free agency history does not suggest any available star in the near future would place Chicago at the top of his most wanted destinations.

Despite playing in the third largest market, perhaps the Bulls ought to think about adopting mid-market player acquisition strategies, since swinging for the fences in every big-time free agency period, as big teams should do, hasn't worked out for the Bulls. 2000 and 2010 being the prime, and most embarrassing, examples.

This team will need to take a few steps back before it can make that run again. Some options for next year:

- Move Deng. He'll be a FA after 2013-14 and frees up 14.3 M
- Do something with Boozer - amensty etc. frees up 15M on the cap for next year and 16 for 2014-15
- Extend Butler at a small price - he's a good bench player and since he's still on his rookie deal, you can likely lock him in at a low cost now then waiting for RFA and get it in heinie like they did with Asik.
- You wish you could move Rip or Hinrich for a 2nd round pick in 2017 because both are basically the difference in Taj's 2012/13 and 2013/14 costs (NOT LIKELY)

Just by doing 1 and 2, you free up 29M for next year. You will have to take some crap back for Deng so can't say it will be the entire 29M but hopefully you can get some savings and then have money to play with in 2014-15....but 2013-14 looks like the same ole crap.

Hamilton is gone after this season, and hopefully he never plays another minute for the rest of this year.

If they want flexibility they have to amnesty Boozer or make some trades. Hamilton will be bought out for $1 million this summer. They won't have any money until Deng is a free agent. I'm not sure what they will do with Hinrich as he has one more year on his deal. Does anyone like Shark know what the Bulls will pay in luxury tax if they don't amnesty Boozer?

When you say the window is closed, you have to be more specific.

I dont think D Rose's window is closed, but the window on this core probably is.

No, Derrick's window is wide open. I fully think his best years may still be ahead of him, but staying in Chicago would be a surefire way of guaranteeing that he never wins a championship. I don't want that for him. I want him to eventually go elsewhere and win a title. He'd be great in New York with Melo.

I don't think you're actually a Bulls' fan if you want Rose to go play in New York.

Very Scoreheadish statement, man. There is absolutely no way for you to know that or even have an educated opinion on it since we have no idea what will happen in the next 10 years. That's as silly as me saying it's guaranteed that he does win a title if he stays here.

Why do you think NY is closer to a championship than the Bulls are? They have been relatively healthy all season long, and they have roughly the same record as the Bulls since January 1st. They also have much less flexibilty going forward, specifically without an amnesty clause in their backpocket. I can't think of one logical reason why you think the Knicks are better than the Bulls when the Bulls have Derrick Rose. They are pretty close together even without Derrick.

I also think Mini Ditka finally had a relevant point. Regardless of if you are a Rose fan, don't you also identify as a Bulls fan? Why would you not want Melo to come here instead of having Rose go to NY? That really makes no damn sense to me. I get being negative on the team because it's been a frustrating season, but you're drastically underestimating Rose's impact on the team. You talk about the team like it's the same regardless of if Rose is there or not.

I agree with all your points, but I believe New York still has their amnesty. And I'm guessing Amare is on the chopping block this off-season or next.

Those are fair criticisms, Farvio. I'll say this:

Regarding Melo, of course I'd love to see him in a Bulls uniform but let's face it: That's very unlikely to ever happen. Rose going to New York would be more feasible.

The reason I underrate the Bulls compared to New York is because Melo+Shumpert+Smith+Chandler is better than Rose+Noah+Nobody Else. I understand I'm being very meatballish in my negativity here, but I've never claimed not to be an NBA meatball.

Perhaps I'm underestimating Rose, but it's been so damn long since I've seen him play at 100% that I don't even know what the fuck it looks like anymore. And then I think back to that Miami series and how the Heat were able to offensively put the Bulls on ice after game 2. The Bulls can't win a championship if they can't score against teams that try on defense.

A lot of this is frustration.

The Bulls will only have $40M in salaries on the books going into 2014. They aren't in cap hell and they can still win as constructed if they are healthy. It makes absolutely no sense to try to be mediocre. Going forward the Bulls are in great shape to land another impact player and they still have the Bobcats draft pick to play with. Derrick Rose will get a sidekick. Let's not forget that LeBron can become a free agent in 2014 too.

They used it on Billups to save like $6 million or something like that to get Chandler, and at the time were still on the hook for $90+ million for Amare's uninsured contract.

Gotta love the Knicks.
