Here is what former NFL players texted me regarding their thoughts on new rule about offensive players being penalized for lowering head.

Desmond Clark "It's a joke"

Mike Ditka "Not a good rule for offensive backs lowering their head at contact it's a natural reaction too hard to inforce"

Lem Barney "It's going to be a hard rule to deal with because of the fact from middle school high school college and in the League coaches all alone the way teach, p
damental to have to deal with.....
ut that hat on the players when blocking or tackling and the Greatest part of your body is in side the helmet and that's the BRIAN. It's a retraining fun"

Fred the Hammer Williamson "It's makes the runner a
Sitting duck
What the hell
Is the purpose of
That stupid
Rule. I hope
There is enough back
Lash to change that"

Doug Plank "It reflects the growing concern for head trauma. Offensive players are now accountable for using the helmet as a point of contact. This should reduce head injuries."

Mike Haynes "I think it's a good idea. Definitely addresses a safety concern."

Dermontti Dawson "I think it help cut down the number of neck injuries and potential concussions."
It will make players start to form tackle with there heads up and seeing what they hit. Tackling 101, see what your hitting!"

Herb Adderley "Should have done it in the 6o's !!"

Joe Delamueirre "The running backs will get hurt a lot more."

How many of those players did you respond to with a picture of your penis?

I appreciate that Fred Williamson responds to all questions in free-verse poetry.

I'm just glad that Michael Haynes was able to respond to you while he was on break from his shift at Taco Bell.

Wrong Michael Haynes. Former Patriot & Raider and Hall of Famer. Worked in NFL office as VP.

I think it is a good rule. Might need to be defined more.

If a DBack can't launch themselves like a missle at a guy, why should a RB be able to square up a player, get a running start and place his helmet right into the guys chest as a weapon.

These types of rules should always have the exception of the refs ability to determine intent.

I dont think it would have been called a ton in the NFL last year, but it happens that a RB, uses his helmet to knock a guy over when one on one at the line. When the same D Player can't tackle him in the same way.

I think it is more of making the collision fair. If the D Player cant do it, why should the O player be able to?

It's like the NCAA Blow to the head rule. Should have some intent language in that rule. Getting ridiculous on that call now.

Speaking of Michael Haynes, I was at Carson's a couple years ago doing some shopping, and I saw a Michael Haynes Jersey for sale on a clearance rack. The guy had been out of the league for at least 5 years at that time, and I couldn't believe his Jersey was still unsold. I nearly bought it, just to add to my terrible Jersey collection. Would have looked real nice next to my Garrett Wolfe Jersey.

Is the purpose of this thread to let us know that former NFL players have his number? We're getting into humblebrag territory here.

Back to the point...

It's stupid, in my opinion, to have something be the right way one day and a penalty the next.
Until now, playing like this, head down, run hard, make em regret trying to tackle you was the best possible thing you can do. Then the next day it's a penalty.

It stinks of desperation to alter the perception that the league cares about player safety.
