Vernon wells deal to the Yankees close to happening.

The rich get richer. I think Vernon Wells is supposed to earn a lot of $$$$ this season...as a part-time player in Anaheim before news of this rumored deal surfaced with the Yankees.

Why would anyone intentionally want Vernon Wells on their roster? I know the Yankee roster is in shambles with hurty, broken overpaid veterans.. but adding another one just reaks of desperation. All that talk by Cashman about the luxury tax threshold, etc. goes right out the window when you trade for Vernon Fucking Wells. Awful.
Its helped them before. Look at what Ibanez did last year. I'm not necessarily saying this Wells move is a good one, but if there is one team over the last 10-12 years that has had "has beens" contribute to wins in the playoffs, its the Yanks.

The only semi-rational explanation I can come up with is that having a RH-hitting 4th OF with some usefulness with the glove (once Granderson returns) would help to spell the 3 LH OF rotation. One can argue that Anaheim wasn't the best park for Wells over the last two seasons by looking at his splits (Home: .208/.244/.355 Road: .236/.272/.464 ), but Yankee stadium isn't going to really help him either as he has exactly 2(!) dingers to RF since 2007.

I'm reading that NY is only paying $13mm over the 2 remaining years on his deal, but even an addition of $6.5per will only add to the Luxury tax that Cashman has pointed to as the reasoning behind the lack of offseason moves. It's hard to imagine Wells even putting up $6.5mm in value. Don't you think the Cub would have taken back $13m in salary relief for Soriano over the same period? It makes one wonder what Theo was actually asking for, but that's a topic for different thread...

They let Russel Martin walk (replacing him with a barely cromulent Chris Stewart) because they wouldn't pay him $12m. They tried to lure Derek Lee out of retirement, who hasn't played in two years. They tried the same thing with Chipper, and fortunately for all parties involved, he did the classy thing and wouldn't even consider it.. I just don't understand the process here at all. Somebody needs to do a psychiatric well-being check on Cashman.

Theo wanted legitimate prospects. Cashman isn't ready to go there just yet. If Vernon Wells remains bad, maybe they go after Soriano next. Probably wishful thinking though.

Also, the Yankees only bought ONE WS title out of the last 5.

Yep. They built a team with key homegrown guys who all got old at once. Now they may finish last. It really isn't that easy.

It's just an oddly easy comparison to make... soft tossing "pound the zone" type guys who pitched WAY over their peripherals in contract years... 3/$33 is a decent price for a 3-4 type innings eater guy... unfortunately for the Brewer he looks like he's expected to be the #2. I'm pretty sure Hawger or anyone in MIL don't really expect him to go 16-3 2.86 again. He isn't a Duncanite really, his groundball rates are nothing special. He will serve up gophers, that isn't going to play that will in Miller.

If it makes you feel any better, the rotation will improve by simply not giving the ball to Randy Wolf and his 5.5 ERA 25 times. Greinke and Marcum are gone, but Fiers, Estrada and the Peralta kid all have some upside to them, so it's not hard to see an 84-86 win team if a couple of the hitters have career years. The 1B position looks a bit grim, but again there are AAAA type options there. The Brew lost a shit ton of games early last year due to a ridiculous number of bullpen meltdowns. While I really don't like the expression "It couldn't get any worse!" (it can always get worse) relievers are highly fungible and it's not unreasonable to project somebody emerging who is at least serviceable.

The Brewers could go 0-162, and I'd still be pissed they didn't find a way to play more games to lose. Fuck 'em.

I'm happy with the compensation draft pick.

Also excited that Miller, Kelly, and Rosenthal all made the team out of the gate. Lots of potential there for the Birds-on-Bat 8)
