Tubby Smith fired and bought out at Minnesota. Wow. Just, wow. Clearly, these schools have PLENTY of money laying around.

So Minnesota is now looking for a head basketball coach, along with Northwestern, UCLA & I think I've heard USC are among the schools searching. Hmmm...

Stupid move by Minn. They will not find a better coach than Smith.

I do not understand what these schools are thinking

Correct me if I'm wrong, but two things. First, didn't Tubby Smith win an NCAA title with Kentucky a few years ago? Second, wasn't Minnesota nationally ranked at one point? I thought they were.

I totally agree, how good can they be? What a dumb firing.

Missed the tournament 3 out of 6 years. 1 tourney win. Losing Big Ten record. Never finished higher than 6th in the Big Ten. Off the court issues not dealt with well.

They probably won't do much better with a new coach but Tubby has been pretty bad at Minnesota.

Not really. ESPN's Dan Dakich and many others will tell you anything but.

But it is Minnesota. Getting in the tournament 50% of the time is pretty darn good

Why is this such a surprise? Tubby Smith has been bad at Minnesota with decent talent.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- South Alabama has hired Butler associate head coach Matthew Graves as its head basketball coach, hoping to duplicate some of the NCAA tournament success that program has enjoyed in recent years.

Graves doesn't think the winning will take long for the Sun Belt Conference program, and said that was his message in a brief locker room visit with the Jaguars players before Monday's introductory news conference.

"We're here next year to compete for a championship," Graves said. "This is not a rebuilding process. This is not a reloading process. This is a process that we're going to have sustained success starting next year. That is the goal from Day 1.

"We're going to put a team out there that everyone's going to be proud of on and off the court."

Graves will replace Ronnie Arrow, who retired 10 games into the season as the winningest coach for both the Mobile school and the Sun Belt Conference. Associate head coach Jeff Price served as interim coach the rest of the season, with the Jaguars finishing 17-13 and losing to Western Kentucky in the quarterfinals of the league tournament and to Tulane in the opening round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

No contract information was immediately available.

Graves was a Butler assistant for nine seasons and was elevated to associate head coach in 2010.

Butler made it to the NCAA championship game in 2010 and 2011, but lost 74-72 to Marquette in the second round Saturday. Graves got on the road to Mobile the following day.

"If you look at coach Graves' background and the world that he has lived in over the past decade-plus, what they have been able to accomplish at an institution that is not too dissimilar from one of ours is nothing short of spectacular," South Alabama athletic director Joel Erdmann said. "The resume got him an interview. The resume and the accomplishments got him involved in the search, but the interview landed the job.

"He is a man that when you get to know him, you will understand and appreciate why this decision was made. He is a tremendous basketball person. He lives the game. He understands the game. He knows how to teach the game. He knows how to recruit and he knows how to create a program that will have a sustained level of success."

Graves, a former Butler player, started as his alma mater's coordinator of men's basketball operations from 2001-03 under coach Todd Lickliter, then became an assistant coach.

Butler went 244-98 -- a winning percentage of 71.3 -- during his tenure.

His old boss, Brad Stevens, said Graves should be a success.

"I could not be more thrilled for both Matthew and South Alabama. He is a terrific person and coach, who will undoubtedly bring great credit to the university," the Butler coach said. "He's an excellent communicator who understands what it takes to win at the highest level. We thank him for the 17 total years he spent at Butler as a player and staff member. He had a tremendous impact on Butler basketball."

Graves played for Butler from 1993-98 and was a member of the program's first NCAA tournament team in 35 years. As a senior, he was the Bulldogs' most valuable player and led the team to a second straight tournament appearance. He still ranks in the top 10 in career 3-pointers and free-throw shooting.

Arrow announced his retirement on Dec. 19 with the Jaguars off to a 5-5 start.

Arrow had coached South Alabama for 13-plus seasons in two stints, going 211-61 and leading them to three NCAA tournaments and three Sun Belt titles.

Graves said he knew little about the Jaguars program beyond Butler's 2008 opening-round win in an NCAA regional. Then he got the first email from Erdmann about the job, and came away impressed with the people and the facilities.

"I didn't know a lot about South Alabama except for that moment before I looked into it," Graves said. "People ask why South Alabama? Why would a Midwest guy want to go to South Alabama. When I came down to look at campus, I was sold right away. I understood there was some history here, good tradition. The Mitchell Center is a phenomenal facility to recruit to."

Bobby Hurley Named University at Buffalo Men’s Basketball Head Coach

BUFFALO, NY – Bobby Hurley, one of the most iconic figures in college basketball history, has been named the 12th head men's basketball coach at the University at Buffalo.

He joins UB from the University of Rhode Island where he has been serving as associate head coach.

UB Director of Athletics Danny White made the announcement on Tuesday at a 5:00 pm press conference at Alumni Arena.

"After reviewing a large and highly qualified national pool and following my conversations with some of the most respected figures in college athletics, Coach Hurley was clearly the choice to lead the next era of UB basketball," White said. " As we continue to foster our role as the flagship athletic department for the state of New York, the appointment of Coach Hurley sends a clear statement that the University at Buffalo is committed to bringing big time college athletics to the Western New York community and the state at large.

"Coach Hurley adds an exciting dynamic to our athletic program," White added. "He is one of the most accomplished players in college basketball history with a legacy that includes three Final Four appearances and winning two national championships. I'm confident, after our discussions, that he is the right leader to take our program to the next level. We couldn't be more proud to welcome Bobby, Leslie and their family to the Western New York community."

A first-team All-American in 1993, Hurley is best remembered for being the point guard at Duke – one of the best college basketball teams of all time. Along with Western New York native Christian Laettner, Hurley led the Blue Devils to three Final Four appearances and consecutive national championships in 1991 and 1992. Hurley still holds the NCAA record for career assists with 1,076.

Following his outstanding career at Duke, Hurley was selected by the Sacramento Kings with the seventh pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play five years in the NBA with the Kings and Vancouver Grizzles.

Hurley joined the Philadelphia 76ers as a scout in 2003 before venturing into private business. He was hired as an assistant coach at Wagner College in 2010 and spent two seasons with the Seahawks, playing a critical role in rebuilding the men's basketball team. He helped lead Wagner to a 25-6 record during the 2011-12 season – its best record in school history – before joining Rhode Island, where he was associate head coach this past season.

Hurley comes from a strong basketball lineage. His father, Bob, Sr., is a legendary coach in the high school ranks, leading perennial power St. Anthony's to 26 state championships and more than 1,000 wins in 39 years of coaching. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. Hurley's brother, Dan, is the head men's basketball coach at Rhode Island, after a successful tenure at Wagner College and an outstanding prep school coaching career.

Hurley and his wife, Leslie, have two daughters, Cameron and Sydney, and a son, Bobby.

Shaka Smart is staying at VCU, kind of interesting that he is not jumping at any of these other opportunities. But, good for him if he is happy where he is at.

Thought about this when I read about Smart this morning. Why not stay? If you are happy and the money is remotely close why go to the risk and pressure cooker of LA rather than cozy VA and the lower cost of living? And why the hell anyone would go to MN unless to fish in July is beyond me. 8)

I agree, although I can't see the money being close to what he would have gotten at UCLA. I heard this morning he is making 1.2 at VCU, I am sure it would be more there. But, it is a lot of money and if you are happy, stay, good for him.

UCLA is one of those jewels that you never pass up. There are maybe five of those in the country and they rarely are available. Carolina, Kansas, Loyola, Indiana, Kentucky, UCLA...maybe Louisville. You just cannot say no to those.

Butler's Brad Stevens is the top target in UCLA's search for a new men's basketball coach, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

In a text message to ESPN, Stevens reaffirmed his coaching status at Butler, but also said he would not comment on "any other speculation or situation."

"I'm the coach at Butler," he wrote.

Stevens offered another possible hint at his future Friday morning with a tweet that read: "Love walking thru Hinkle in the morning... Anxious to get started on our spring workouts next week."

A school spokesperson referred questions about Stevens to a general statement issued by athletic director Dan Guerrero earlier this week that said UCLA would "not comment on the process, the candidates, or provide status updates."

Asked if Guerrero was on campus Thursday, the spokesperson said he did not know.

Butler athletic director Barry Collier had no further information.

"We value him and he's an extremely important coach and staff member," Collier said.

Numerous candidates have been mentioned for the UCLA job, including those with NBA experience, but a source close to the search said via text message that, "Dan is focused on a college coach."

Shaka Smart of Virginia Commonwealth was also among UCLA's targets, but he said Wednesday he was returning to VCU and the school announced it was extending his contract through 2023.

Stevens, who guided Butler to the national championship game in 2010 and again in 2011, has been the top target for just about any major job opening during the past three years, but always has been thought of as a tough fish to land. He was born and raised in Indiana, went to college at DePauw, never has held a college coaching job anywhere other than Butler and has professed a love for the lifestyle in his home state.

He was targeted by major conference schools such as Oregon, Wake Forest and Clemson in 2010, but signed an extension with Butler through the 2021-22 season. He reportedly makes around $1 million per season. Ben Howland, recently fired by UCLA, was making $2.3 million, but UCLA has had an influx of money, thanks to new television deals with the Pac-12 Network, ESPN and Fox.

Sources told ESPNLA.com that UCLA and Stevens may be in contract negotiations. However, another source dismissed the claim.

Two former UCLA assistants and current head coaches -- NC State's Mark Gottfried and Washington's Lorenzo Romar -- were said by to be on the Bruins' list, according to sources. But NC State athletic director Debbie Yow said Gottfried has a $3.75 million buyout and said the coach told her he hasn't heard from UCLA. Romar also said via text he has had no contact with UCLA.

Slowly moving down the food chain.

Texas Tech officials have met with former Minnesota coach Tubby Smith about the Red Raiders' vacant head-coaching position, multiple sources told ESPN.com on Thursday.

Athletic director Kirby Hocutt and chancellor Kent Hance flew to North Carolina on Wednesday evening to talk with Smith about the position, and Smith was spotted in Lubbock on Thursday evening at Texas Tech's athletic facility. It is unclear whether Smith has been offered the job or whether he would accept the position if an offer was extended.

Smith, who won an NCAA title at Kentucky in 1998, was fired by Minnesota on Monday after six years at the school. The Golden Gophers went 21-13 this season, losing to Florida in the NCAA tournament round of 32.

Efforts to reach Smith on Thursday were unsuccessful.

Texas Tech already has met with a handful of other coaches about the job, including Oral Roberts' Scott Sutton, Southern Illinois' Barry Hinson, New Mexico State's Marvin Menzies, Indiana assistant Steve McClain, and former UTEP and Nebraska coach Doc Sadler, who is in his first season as director of basketball operations at Kansas. The Lubbock Avalanche Journal reported Thursday evening that Southern Miss coach Donnie Tyndall also has been contacted about the job.

Sources said Sadler is still being considered for the job, along with Chris Walker, a former Red Raiders assistant. Walker became Texas Tech's interim coach after Billy Gillispie was forced to resign in September amid allegations he verbally abused players and repeatedly broke NCAA rules by exceeding limits on practice time.

Texas Tech went 11-20 under Walker this season, including a 3-15 record in the Big 12.

UCLA has hired New Mexico coach Steve Alford.

Sources told CBSSports.com that Alford has signed a seven-year deal worth $2.6 million per year. Alford's recently inked a 10-year deal at New Mexico, and the buyout will be paid by UCLA.

Alford, 48, starred at Indiana for Bob Knight and made coaching stops at Southwest Missouri State and Iowa before going to New Mexico. He led the Lobos to three NCAA tournament appearances in the last six seasons. New Mexico lost to Harvard this year in the NCAA tourney after winning the Mountain West regular-season and tourney titles.

Alford's career mark is 463-235 and he's 5-7 in the NCAA tournament.

Alford replaces Ben Howland, who was fired after 10 seasons in Westwood. Howland took the Bruins to three straight Final Fours.

A mere 12 hours or so after his team was eliminated from the NCAA tournament following a star-kissed run, Florida Gulf Coast coach Andy Enfield is being courted by USC.

This news comes via Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports. Enfield has been the coach at FGCU the past two seasons and brought the program to its first NCAA tourney appearance this year.

Sources say the Trojans are targeting the 43-year-old Enfield, who is 41-28 at FGCU. While Enfield, a former Florida State and NBA assistant coach has few recruiting ties to the West Coast, USC is intrigued by not only his success and potential, but his preferred uptempo style of play. ... A source said talks between the school and coach are expected to begin this weekend.
That's what two wins in one big tournament can get you. Despite only two years of head-coaching experience, Enfield would be considered a home run no matter where he landed specifically because of what transpired over the first weekend in the NCAA tournament.

Friday night, Enfield told a group of reporters that he "hadn't even thought about that" yet, in regard to his coaching future.

So who's the bigger jackass in this one?

Alford for jumping to UCLA after signing a 10 year extension 10 days before this OR the AD who negotiated a 10 year extension with only a 1 million dollar buyout?

When talking jackasses Alford is always a good answer.

But the AD situation is pretty bad, gotta make it harder than that

Alford is a jackass. Trust me, I know.

“We have started to put our imprint on the program,” Alford said. “We’ve got things there in place to continue to be successful. Got our whole starting five coming back. Great recruiting class.”

Oh yeah I know as well. I am good friends with a high school basketball coach in our area. He used to go to the SW MO State basketball camps every year, and he has a ton of stories of what a prick Alford was. Now he loves Alfords dad, says he is a truly good guy.

When Alford first moved into Iowa City, he had work done on his house and then after agreeing to a price, asked for a deal on it because well, he was Steve Alford.

Add UCLA to the list of schools I will actively root against come next year.

And in case anyone forgot what a scumbag Alford is, Bernstein did a nice recap today...usually don't care for his columns, but this was spot on.

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/03/31/ ... a-scumbag/

Oh, and not happy to see Tubby Smith coming to Texas Tech...good coach and will have that program back in the mix in the Big 12 in no time I would think.
