There will always be an excuse. You came back. You are likely to stay for a long time.

Why would you willingly move to a place that sucks? That's pretty dumb.

To help out my sister.

It's not uncommon for people to return to an area because of family. You still actively chose to return, and are already making other excuses to stay such as your new job.

If you really hated Illinois that much you'd have found another place to try out. However, whatever place that is probably sucks more.

 I dont even know what you are arguing right now. This must be what RFDC and Bryan were talking about. I think Illinois sucks overall. It's not even close to a great state. I enjoyed Texas much more. But it doesnt suck bad enough for me to ignore every other factor that goes into living somewhere. So I guess that means I think it is an awesome place to live.

If I thought a state "fucking sucks" I wouldn't willingly move there with no current plan to leave. That's just me though.

So, when do you plan on moving? Personally, I can't wait to get back to Illinois. I like New York but Illinois is better in my opinion.

As soon as I moved back here I was making plans to leave when my sister got better. But best laid plans and all that, you know. Is there any state you think "fucking sucks"? Is there any hypothetical situation, no matter how extreme, that would convince you to move there? Im guessing there is.

I cant tell if that last part is sarcasm or not. If it's not, why dont you move back to Illinois this month? Just sell your house, quit your job, and tell the wife you're moving back here.

I dont really have any immediate desire or plans to move right now, as I said. If I thought I could get a job making 80% of what I'm making right now then I probably would be planning to move to North Carolina, Tennessee, or Colorado because I was planning on moving to one of those states by the end of 2013 if I hadn't gotten this job, which came along somewhat unexpectedly.

It's just pretty dirty/scummy. I will admit to not spending a ton of quality time there only passed through on a couple of occasions. Perhaps I need to rediscover the hidden jewel of the Mississippi. I support the idea of Beale St more than the actuality of Beale St.

When I was there it seemed like 1/4 of the downtown was for sale.

There are a lot of states that I think are bad. I wouldn't move to them. If I lived there, thought it "fucking sucks" I certainly wouldn't move back.

I like New York enough to be here a few more years. It's fun to experience a different part of the country. When the time comes though, Illinois is 95% where I'll end back up.

That's the point though. You already seem to be setting things up for being in Illinois a long time. If you really hated Illinois, you'd be gone regardless of anything else.

What if they paid you $100 million to go live there for a year, and your wife also insisted on it? Obviously this is quite extreme, but there are clearly important factors that go into deciding where to live that have nothing to do with the actual location itself.

I guess it depends on how you define long time. I dont own a house here right now, and will probably end up getting an apartment here soon for 12 months and re-evaluate what to do as the lease is coming to an end.

Let's just agree that I think this state sucks, but clearly dont think it sucks enough to ignore all the other factors that went into my decision to move back here. Fair enough?

Of course, but I doubt either you or me are in a situation comparable to that. The entire country was yours for the choosing. You willingly returned. I doubt you are living every day thinking that it sucks there.

Fair enough, though it would be interesting to hear why you think the state sucks. It obviously has problems, but so does anywhere.

I didn't tell FavreFan why he moved somewhere. I said he willing chose to move to back to a state that "fucking sucks" and has no plans to leave right now either. That's fact.

I'm not in a situation comparable to making nine figures, no. But when the situation presented itself last August, I really didn't feel like I had a choice in the matter, which is why I used that extreme analogy. And living day to day here is tolerable.

People are bigger assholes here than most anywhere else I have been. I can see why this isnt an issue for you since you moved to NY and plan on moving back here. The state government is easily one of the worst in the country. The weather sucks. There's cops everywhere it seems. Overall, I just felt much more relaxed and happier living in the south. This whole conversation is really just a matter of preference. It's hard to objectively qualify the quality of a state. But I bet if you tried and came up with a diverse set of criteria, Illinois wouldn't grade out all that wonderfully.

As soon as you stop pretending to know how people feel and why they do certain things.

Brick moved to NY because he has a fetish for the pigeons in central park.

Don't try to convince me otherwise. It is fact.

That's not really a fact. I do have plans to move, and specific states I am considering. It just is unlikely that it will be before next summer at the earliest.

You aren't planning to leave right now. You may be leaving in the future. In that case, everyone is planning to move.

Did my posts about IU bring this out? It seemed to start after that.

What are you talking about? My parents aren't planning to move anywhere. How is everyone planning to move?

This is EXACTLY why RPB and RFDC have a point in regards to your posts. Even after I tell you I think this state sucks or Im planning to move, your response is that I dont think this state sucks because I live here and Im not planning to move because I haven't moved yet.

I imagine this conversation and laugh

BR's Wife: I'm hungry, I'm gonna make dinner
BR: If you were actually hungry, you would already be eating. Therefore, your actions suggest you are not actually hungry.

You don't think your parents are at least considering retiring someone else? That's what I was talking about. You have undefined plans to one day move away. It's just as likely 10 years from now you still live in Illinois.

To me, you aren't planning on moving until you have a day you are leaving.

To me, you aren't planning on moving until you have a day you are leaving.

This must be a hard concept to grasp.

I am not just as likely to live in Illinois 10 years from now as I am to move away. It's not a coin toss. There is a very, very small chance I am living here even 3 years from today. That is why I am planning to move.... eventually. Does this make sense, or are you just gonna tell me I'm lying and repeat that I have a good chance of living in Illinois the rest of my life? Like RPB said, you're either saying that I am lying or pretending to read my mind.

No, my parents are not planning on retiring anywhere. They are quite sure they will live in their house here til they die.

Stop with the lying stuff. It's dumb. I'm not saying you are lying. I'm saying that if you don't have any real plans to move then you aren't really planning to move. You are going to be in Illinois for the forseeable future. Now, if you could say that in August 2013 you are moving to middle of nowhere, Tennessee or if I could say that in September 2015 I'm moving to the great state of Illinois then we would be planning to move. You can't. I can't.

The whole thing is stupid anyways. At least for now, you are choosing to live in a state that fucking sucks, and you are talking about staying there at least for a year, and likely longer than that. Enjoy the hell that is Illinois. I hope you get out one day.

I played...and was cursed at ...hit in the head with the ball ( explains alot  ) and this was from 5th grade thru H.S.The blows to the head stopped because I started doing what the coach wanted me to do.Been grabbed by the jersey never kicked.....but if this was happening why weren't the players complaining or quitting this tyranical sob? If you have played organized basketball and weren't swore at.. hit with a ball or had your jersey grabbed I guess you were lucky.

most everyone will defend what they call "home" but i've never seen such defensiveness of their home outside of NJ and here. NJ not only thinks they're not a shithole and the armpit of the east coast (maryland is bailed out by baltimore and chesapeake bay), New Jersians think they live in the greatest state ever. They're worse than New Yorkers with their irrational undying love of their state. At least Illinois does have Chicago...and the western burbs are nice. But a lot of the state does in fact suck. Not as much as Missouri or Iowa, but close.

i agree with FF putting NO on the list of great cities. if you can stand the hippies, i think portland actually is far better than seattle. but both are pretty nice cities. i've heard great things about san francisco too.

i'm with mike on his thoughts with the coach and the firing. and it makes me wonder what would've happened to bobby knight if he'd have lived during this time.
