Um...I'd say at least 2 people had a chance to get on base.

If Wood was so dominant and was so great that day, and if he could strike out God, why did he end up hitting a batter?

Because he wasn't perfect.

One was an error and another guy got hit. IIRC only 1 ball made it to the outfield. They could have put beds out there.

Frank if you could be objective about the Cubs you would see why. I realize I'm the only diehard Sox and Cubs fan on this board but some things shouldn't be hard to get.

The results are as objective as they get. Objectively speaking, it's impossible to say Wood's game was better than a perfect one. Subjectively, I guess you could make a weak case for it...

So I should trust you over the official scorer?

Also, why doesn't hitting a person count? If Wood had hit 15 batters would it have counted?

Except it's not. One was dominant and the other was more lucky than anything.

I would say trusting your eyes would be better.

Yep. That's called a subjective opinion. Objective truth is that a perfect game will always be better than a game where a pitcher allows two base runners.

Really, this is silly

I think Jeff Pico's complete game shutout debut is probably the greatest achievement in sports ever.

How can one be dominant, yet hit a batter? Because he wasn't that dominant. Objectively, subjectively, whatever.

A 13 year old with stats could make the argument that LeBron was a better player than Jordan at the same age. The stats may say he is right. Anyone with eyes that have seen both of them play will know that he is wrong.

And a guy could make up a formula that says allowing 2 baserunners is better than allowing 0 baserunners. Anyone with any sense will know that he is wrong.

Yeah, but this is dragging on even for this place.

It has to be in the discussion for longest running argument in board history. It just seamlessly picks up every April like the pickup game in the Sandlot. I enjoy it.

Is it me or have we had this argument like 10 times?

Strange.

Obviously the most dominant pitching performance ever was Phil Humber 4/21/12 my friends.

I believe I read somewhere that using the James formula, Wood could have given up another 2 hits and a run, and still had the most "points" of any game pitched.

I'm sorry Wood was short of perfect that drizzly day in 1998.

I think its because there is a perfect game or no hitter every other week seemingly. Every time someone even flirts with either it comes up.

BTW, still only four 20 K games in the history of baseball. Lots more no hitters and perfect games. I wonder if that means anything?

I don't think anyone has ever disputed that Wood's game was more rare. Rare doesn't necessarily mean better.

Because the objective of a pitcher going into a game is to allow the least amount of base runners possible. It's not to strike out as many batters as possible. If all a pitcher was trying to do every time he started a game was break into that 20 K club, I think it probably would have happened at least a couple more times. Could be wrong though, just a guess.
