What a horrendous idea. Honestly, that is one of the worst ones out there.

Just let schools pay up to $3,000 a month above and beyond what they do now. Make it optional. It's done. It's easy.

Paying college basketball players with NBA money is an interesting concept, but in order for that to be fair, you'd have to draft players out of high school and subsequently pay them to play on assignment at their respective colleges. That's the way it would have to be. I don't like the idea of some NBA slush fund. But then you find yourself drafting unknown commodities out of high school and hoping you can develop them through college, that or you have some players getting paid because they've already been drafted and assigned while other players are not paid.

Here is a simple solution. End recruiting! All college sports consist of walk on's. No scholarships,no pay,no nothing! That will shut everybody up.

Found the exchange that resulted in my blocking!

Whitlock tweeted something about Singletary. I responded with "You're ignoring the fact that he's a horrible coach." He replied with "No I'm not. Couldn't care less if he's fired. Jimmy Raye is a fireable offense," then BLOCKED. He's as soft as Goff.

There are a lot of factual errors in Whitlock's piece, which is par for the course, but the whole thing pretty much reads like Cotton Hill talking about how he's going to swim to Cuba with a wrench in his mouth and pose as a beautiful senorita plumber in a scheme to kill Castro. You can poke holes pretty much anywhere along the way.

The easiest solution -- to the extent that a "solution" is really needed -- would be to just let the NBA teams draft whomever they want. You don't need to declare for the draft; you are just drafted, or you aren't. If you are drafted and don't like your slot, then go back to school. There. I fixed the problem.

That's a good idea, too. NHL teams draft players who play in college, and hold their rights without signing them to contracts, maintaining amateur status. That could work for basketball. It'd give people a dog in the NCAA fight they might not have otherwise.

I think the NHL and MLB situations are infinitely better than what the NBA and NFL has done.

It is kind of amusing that the "solution" is always make it more like the NBA, when in fact college basketball does much better than the NBA.

You never see any articles stating that the NBA should start doing things more like the much more popular NCAA tournament.

Ask the kids who have to pay it back over 10-15 years with student loans. You get room and board, and we’ll give you the best nutritionist, the best strength coach to develop you, the best tutors to help you academically, and coaches to teach you and help you develop. How much do you think it would cost to hire a personal trainer and tutor for 4-5 years?

Bob Stoops is 100% correct. Paying College athletes is a ridiculous idea.

Why are Republicans/conservatives almost universally opposed to paying players? Shouldn't they be in favor of a free market?

CH - conservatives haven't really been in favor of a free market in our lifetimes(I've gathered from your posts that we are roughly the same age)

I agree that Whitlock'a proposal has serious flaws, but I really prefer his progressive compensation scale to the fixed flat rate that you're proposing.

The idea is that they are already paid at the level they deserve, which for 99% of them is true. Also, it is a free market. They are free to not play which seems to be lost on just about everyone. Every single player in college athletics has chosen to play. If you want to make $150k a year, find someone who will pay you $150k a year. The vast majority of college teams couldn't afford to pay you more than an extra $10,000 to $30,000 a year.

It has to be a flat rate. I mean, you could always adjust it so a freshman gets $2,000 and a senior gets $4,000 but it's the same general principle.

There's nothing for the NBA to "go for" in my solution. The NCAA would just allow players to return after being drafted.

I'm not sure how it makes the league more unbalanced, either. I can't see many top-5 picks holding out because they hope they get drafted by the Knicks the following year. If anything it will hurt the better teams, since lots of players might say "screw the 28th pick, I can do better next year."
