Kobe is simply amazing. They're going to kill him though. It's really sad that this team plays like the Smush Parker cast and they are a thousand times more talented.

Kobe:
47 points
14/27 from the field
18/18 from the line
8 Rebounds
5 Assists
3 Steals
4 Blocks
1 Turnover
48 MINS

Farvio and Walt say he's not Top 10, and possibly not even Top 15. Thoughts?

He may be top 3. It's unreal what he is doing. At his age and all the miles he has put on his body. His dedication to the game is 2nd to none.

From Elias: Kobe Bryant: 1st player in NBA history with at least 47 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 blocks, 3 steals in an NBA game (blocks and steals became official in 1973-74)

i hate stats like that
"first person to eat 4 jelly donuts, 2 8oz glasses of milk, jog for 22 minutes before the game, go 12-23 from the field, 6-8 from the line, grab 14 rebounds, 5 blocks and have a threesome with 2 cheerleaders after the game"

oh wow!!!

i didn't say that...obviously it is

it just doesn't really have any kind of historical significance

next season if someone betters that stat line by 2 blocks in the first week of the season and you' re watching the game are you gonna go "oh shit someone beat Kobe's great line from April 2013!! ", no you won't remember it at all . its just one of those stupid Elias historical stat things that no one gives a shit about

ESPN created the reporting of stats like that in order to serve the manufactured discussions and debates on their shows.

These are the schedules for BOTH the Lakers & Jazz the rest of the way. Keep in mind if the two teams finish tied, Utah goes to the NBA Playoffs and Kobe's team stays home.

UTAH (41-38):
vs. Minnesota Friday-8:30P
@ Minnesota Monday-7P
@ Memphis Next Wednesday-7P-ESPN

L.A. LAKERS (42-37):
vs. Golden State Friday-9:30P
vs. San Antonio Sunday-8:30P-NBA TV
vs. Houston Next Wednesday-9:30P-ESPN

Lakers with the MUCH tougher schedule, though all 3 games of theirs are at home apparently.

I haven't looked at the standings as of late, but it'll all come down to who's resting their players. And Kobe.

That's true...on paper. The Spurs are still fighting for the #1 seed in the West, but would lose the tiebreaker to the Thunder for the top seed if that came to fruition. As for the Rockets, they've got a shot to finish where the Warriors are. That would be 6th. They can't go any higher.

Magic Johnson didn't just intimate that if the Lakers would beat the Spurs if they meet in the first round, he flat out said it.

I've never been a fan of Kobe, so don't take this as an apology of some sorts for Kobe. I completely agree with the Grantland article, and whoever votes for Kobe to be put on any of the All NBA defensive teams should be permanently barred from opining professionally about basketball. I will say, however, that Kobe has surprisingly put up an awesome offensive year for someone his age. At the very least, we can say he's done his part to make the Lakers a force on offense. He's still someone who can put pressure on the defense, and if D'Antoni ever figured out a way for Gasol and his other pieces to apply pressure on defenses, then they would look totally different.

I don't think they will, but it would be fun watching them try.

Except this never happened. Why do you hate Kobe? He has the best game any player has had this season at 95 years old and you still try to find a way to knock him. He's still a good defender even if his body won't allow him to play both ends of the court the way he used to.

Interesting article. I agree with a lot of it. But in fairness to Kobe, you could put together a low light defensive reel for every "good" defensive player in the league.

Yeah, but Lowe is a really respected basketball writer. He wouldn't write an article like this on Tony Allen.

Kobe is a liability on defense now. It's impossible to deny.

You're often too infatuated with stats. I can say this, because I don't know anyone else who believes that game by Kobe was actually better than LeBron's best game this season. Sometimes I gotta remind you guys that there are two sides to a basketball court. Kobe is a top 5-10 player offensively still. He's a liability on defense. I'm not telling you anything you don't already know if you've seen a dozen or more Lakers games this season.

Edit: You aren't allowed to use the body excuse. It's not applicable. He's been a lazy diva defensively this season. Much like Wade was last season.

He's 95 years old and they won't score any points without him. He's been forced to be Steve Nash on top of being Kobe. He's the 3rd best player in the game. His run over the past couple months would make him the MVP if he did it for an entire season. He's been incredible all season. May I remind you that he's doing all of this with an ankle injury that kept Parker out for a month.

BTW the article acknowledges that he is still a good defender and can lock someone down when he wants to. He just can't do it for the 48 mins a game he is forced to play now.

He's not even as old as MJ was in '98. Relax.

Nobody's forcing him to become Steve Nash defensively. He did that on his own. And he's not a top 5 player still, let alone top 3. Can't be a top 3 player and flat out refuse to play one side of the court. Doesn't work that way.

He's already played more mins and games than MJ. He's clearly a top 3 player to anyone being objective. Even at 95 he plays better defense than Durant has played his entire career. Offensively he's probably #2 to Durant. He's #1 offensively if you factor in how hard he has to work to get his points. Just be honest and admit you don't like Kobe. It appears every Kobe post you make is a knock on the closest thing we may see to his Airness.

He is the closest we have seen to MJ, but no way in the world is he top 3 right now.

I like and respect Kobe. I'm just not a fanboy of his. Nobody who is objective and knows basketball thinks Kobe has been the third best player this year. And Durant is miles ahead of him defensively. This isn't 2008. Again, Kobe is BAD on defense now, pretty much by choice. Durant is definitely an above average defender.

You posted an article that you're now disagreeing with it. It's really laughable to say Durant is miles ahead of Kobe defensively. You don't have to be a fan to appreciate what he's doing. That being said it's clear that you do not like him. To even find fault in what he has been doing is insane. On top of dominating the game he has decided to coach the team too. He's finally told everyone to ignore the coach and they are winning because of it.
