I don't find any of his bits funny. I don't find his show funny. I thought his hosting gig on SNL was the worst episode this side of a Melissa McCarthy appearance in close to 10 years. Listening to him drone on puts me to sleep.

Who is/was funny?

I've always enjoyed Bob Saget. I like Doug Benson. Chapelle and Chris Rock kill me. I liked Jim Brewer in the late 90's. Like Jim Norton.

Louis CK is in my top 5. May be my favorite.

Dane Cook is so not funny. He is the polar opposite of funny. Just horrible.

But both those guys styles appeal to wildly different audiences, I don't see how they can be compared.

But after the issues the two had comparisons can't be avoided

And I disagree about wildly different audiences stand up is stand up. They play the same roms

I don't know who liked Dane Cook back then but it was a lot of fucking people. He sold out the garden twice in one night no other stand up has come close to that since Dice Clay in the 80's.

I think Dane is very good. Not his fault he got so over exposed and became so punchable

He and Louis are both Good to me

If Carlin and Pryor are 10s, they are both 7s

I don't know what happened but Dane Cook got very college bro oriented some time around 2005 or 2006 and his popularity skyrocketed (and got him a handful of shitty movies to boot). As soon as that happened it seemed like an even bigger rift developed between alt comics and guys like Cook. Here's were I start talking out of my ass...I figure there was this change in the comedy landscape at this time because comedy wasn't supposed to be for the people that Dane Cook appealed to, it was this insular community of depressed nerds and now it was being taken over by the dudes who were calling them burritos in high school. I'm just going to stop now because I'm not sure what I'm trying to say...

Different strokes I suppose. I like all of those guys in addition to liking Louie CK and since nothing I can say will change you mind on the subject I'll just shut my mouth now.

As someone who hasn't seen Dane Cook live in a club setting, where he apparently rivals Dave Chappelle for his ability to do marathon sets, I can't speak to Cook's chops as a stand up--other than to note that he is/has been insanely successful and it's likely that success has some basis in actual merit. Heck, as much shit as folks give Carlos Mencia, at the end of the day, Mencia must be delivering something folks are willing to pay for, even if Ned/Carlos did rip the bit off from Bill Cosby.

Dane Cook appeared on Louis CK's FX show and I think that episode is one of the eps that earned Louis CK an Emmy. An episode Louis CK wrote to make Dane Cook look like a douchebag and Cook went along with the script Louis gave him...Dane Cook, btw, is not bad at all in the under appreciated Kevin Costner as serial killer 'Mr Brooks'.

I listen to random comedy channels on Tune-In and don't change the channel when a Dane Cook bit comes on--he at least has the ability to hold your attention--esp w/r/t relationships.

Not a fan of Dane Cook, but I can see how he and Louis could be considered mining the same vein of comedic ore. Personal, almost confessional comedy that they manage to turn into universal experiences with which their audiences connect.

Guys like Hannibal Burress and Anthony Jeselnik (who I wish would play it straight, like Andy Kaufman) strike me as more archetypal comedians in terms of premise/setup punch line.

To do what Cook and Louis CK do, the audience needs to buy into you as a human being. Dane Cook detractors might find themselves less hostile to Dane Cook if they didn't have a dislike for the guy from the get-go. Ditto for the relatively few Louis CK detractors out there.

Brad Garrett is the funniest guy I have seen live over the past few years.
Bill Burr (watched all his youtube stuff) seems to be the funniest younger guy.

I lost interest in Dane Cook after his HBO special which I found awful. His material before that was some great stuff. If you just look at this material and ignore his antics, you'll find some gems in there. His bit about public restrooms is one of my favorite bits to this day.

Louie CK is kind of there, doing a job. I gave his show 5 episodes. A few chuckles. Watched some of his stand up and found it more enjoyable than the television show.

Dane Cook has made me laugh on occasion. His act is kind of like Robot Chicken performed by a standup. Very pop culture. Like hey here's an 80s or 90s reference! Isn't that so funny?

People say Bill Burr and Kevin Hart are the "it" guys in stand up now. I've tried watching Hart but he seems like a lamer version of Chris Rock. Burr is, like Louie, ok, but not belly-laugh funny.

I had never seen him do stand up before, so it was all new to me. I thought it was solid. My favorite was his President Nixon bit.

Since this was his first HBO special, I think his idea was to use all of his best material. Because you are introducing yourself to a lot of new people. These HBO specials are remembered when people are deciding who to see in Vegas or when somebody comes to your city. So this was just a marketing opportunity for him.

Id buy that if it were his first big special but he's had two before this. He produced them himself so he didnt take the usual HBO path to success. (although he did have a half hour special with them a while back)

I get it, but its kinda lazy.

Burr
Norton
Louis Ck (Until this last show!)

are some of the best going

Never know why a Larry Reeb or a Doug Benson never got the National limelight

Dane Cook is about as lame as I have ever seen. He tells these long drawn out stories like he is at a bar trying to impress some college chicks. Not even sure there is a punch line. Nothing is creative or mildly entertaining.

He did an interview on Stern prior to the special. Said this was his last time using this material.

I'm a Louis CK fan, so I probably would have enjoyed it even though I've most likely heard this stuff before. Funny is funny. Funny can have replay value.

I've found Dane Cook funny at certain points in time. Not so much recently. I'm not sure I see many similarities between the two.

He's the goods, imo...

Just to be clear, Im not saying Louis CK and Dane Cook are very similar. I just dont think there are a bunch of subsets of audiences like "Louis's audience" vs. "Dane's audience"

I think the consumers are largely the same. You just gotta find a way to make em laugh.

People who dig comedy? You're probably gonna get some crossover no matter what two comics are mentioned. Especially when you bring up to people who pull large audiences.

But I would say that Louis CK has managed to get (and keep) the respect of pretty much every comic that matters. The same can't be said for Cook...

Right, that's my point. I was responding to someone saying they had different audiences.

Yeah and much of that is due to Louis letting Dane look like a joke stealer for two years before finally coming out and saying it wasnt true. Too little too late.

I enjoy Cook as much as I enjoy Louis and I think both of them are behind Burr and Norton.

But, yes, Louis is definitely a comedian's comedian.

Colin Quinn is as well. You never hear a bad word about him from other comics.

Not sure that's exactly how it went down.

sometimes things just stop feeling as though they are worth fighting for.

You stole jokes

No I didn't

Now at that point, you can either go Joe Rogan or you can say "Maybe it's just a misunderstanding or something" and move on.

It's smarter to not make enemies in showbiz...

I know at one point Louis said he doesn't believe Dane stole jokes

It was pretty stupid anyway. Ass sweat is a Louis CK invention or what?

I was doin Ass sweat bits in the 3rd grade!

Louis definitely benefitted from that whole thing.

I guess no one can know for sure (unless its Mencia obvious) but I don't see Cook stealing and if he did not that bit

Anyway I'm starting to lean more toward Bill Burr

Russell Peters sucks

I heard a number of small Dane Cook bits and couldn't figure out why it was even called Comedy? Then watched that Circle Jerk special he had on HBO and that was about as far from a Stand Up show as I have ever seen.

"And then, and then, wait..check this out dude!...."

I wanted to punch his lights out for the benefit of society in general!

As for Louis CK saying he is not going to use that material anymore, really sucks that he realized it and didnt do anything new for a major special.

It was like seeing Mitch Hedburg at Zanies and the guy was so wasted, he had to look at his note card on the stool to remember which jokes to tell. Was actually kinda sad, as he stopped the show to walk back over to the stool and then a 'Oh yeah...so I bought a donut..."

I saw that Cook special at a friends house. His college age son (Major obnoxious Dufus) was cracking up. I knew right there that I wasn't imagining it,this guy,Cook, truly does suck. BF described Cook perfectly. Yet,that bum got rich telling college age kids "stories". Yeah, neat! It's a twisted world.

As far as Louis CK,I watched his "act" on youtube. He reminds me of a dirty version of Dane Cook. Just insane ramblings but if he talks long enough, something funny is said.

Does anybody like Jim Gaffigan?
