Starting early

We had practice with like 25 kids yesterday. The teams were picked last night but the guy just wanted to get as many kids and parents out there as possible. Good idea.


Me: Hey how's it going (extends hand for shake)

Overly excited t ball coach: Hey, how are you (shakes hand)

Me: Yeah I coached the blue team last year, were you the red team?

OETBC: No, not the red team

Me: Oh, ok. Did you coach, maybe I just saw you at a game?

OETBC: Yeah, I coached the maroon team

Me: Oh, not red, but maroon. Cool.



Anyway, this guy brings three mitts (1b, catcher, reg)with him to coach t ball and last year was unsatisfied with how foul balls were called("Not fair to the kids" he cried).

he may be annoying but his type is necessary for a good league

T ball is child care. The concept of practices for five year olds is rediculous. 30 minutes of practice before "games" with 1-2 inning "games" to follow. It should be called "an introduction to baseball" instead of T ball.

We went about an hour and ten last night. I think 45 mins is perfect. Make it an even hour with talking to parents etc.


Yeah, I guess Coach DB is a necessary evil.

gotta start them as early as possible if you want them to be good enough to get that 1/9th baseball scholarship at northeast oklahoma tech!

I am coaching my daughters 9-10 yr old softball team. Things have been going pretty well, but I do have one overly excited Dad that wants to constantly take over. We had practice last night and I had to keep correcting him on things he was telling the girls. And I don't think he was too happy with me when we were working on fielding I had his daughter in RF. But he doesn't see the concept of that is an extremely important position in girls softball because they constantly have to back up missed throws to 1st base. I have a feeling a confrontation is coming between us.

Is any outfield position really important at that age? I would just play 7 infielders, pitcher, and catcher.

We had one guy who seemed nice enough but was screaming at his kid every five seconds. The old coaching from the stands routine.

I dont get why he didnt just come out and help we were taking volunteers.

Actually the one mom who helped was great. She was at first teaching the kids how to play first and run the bases.

She's moderately cute, but its nice to have a coach out there who is 100% about helping the kids without any agenda of their own or delusions of being Casey Stengal

Well granted outfield is a relative term in 9-10 yr old girls softball. Everyone is pretty much on on the infield just some are a little further back.

No chants. I hate those things.

Edit: and yes the fielders behind 1st base are really important. Very few throws to 1st base are completed successfully at this age

I grew up next to a little league baseball diamond, so I pretty much learned the general public sucks around age seven.

My daughter started T-ball this year and here's the schedule so far:
She has had practices on Monday and Wednesday for an hour each time Since April 1st. Not a single kid has hit the ball past the pitcher. Not a single throw to first base has made it there on the fly and the First baseman is yet to catch the ball on the fly. They do the practice getting grounders and throwing which is good. However two hours of practice a week makes sense with kindergartners .

They had their first game last Saturday, each team has three coaches in the field that would direct kids how to play. The kids were getting restless in the field as only the pitcher and first base man were the only ones really playing.

My daughter liked to hit but was completely bored by playing the field and can't wait for soccer to start.

Rookie coaches.

I am assisting on T ball. The head is a rookie and asked if we needed more than the two league scheduled practices before games start. I told him no.

If you get out of the season learning a stance, proper throwing motion and the bases, thats progress for baseball 101.

On the other hand, for the older kids, the practice time is more important than the games. I try to have many more practices in a year than games.

Field time is difficult so you have to find places to practice. I have kind of a secluded park up against the forest preserve that I like. Obviously those factors are also agreeable to the fringe of society as well. Some guy was getting checked for drinking in his car by the police yesterday. A slow guy wanted to show us the 100 gold fish he released into the ponded water on the fields during the weekend. A guy who lives in the forest told me there are too many people drinking in the shelter making noise in his backyard. Urban living.

How did it get to the point of her shouting out ideas?

One idea and I would have politely asked her to save any ideas for before/after practice and even offer an email address

but wait...why are so many of the superstar travel team coaches so eager to tell you how many games they play each summer? isn't it better for those 10 year olds to play 65 games between april-june so they can eventually get good enough to earn that baseball scholarship to ronald reagan community college?

I know we have some people here who participate in the 65 games across the country summers with year round participation. I don't think I could make that committment either as a coach or parent. I'm ready for the end by the time the championship games are played.

8 boys and a girl. The head coach is a guy who has coached at different levels. Another guy, who is cool, and I are the assistants. H.C gathered everyone around at the end of practice and said "What did we learn today?" and one of the kids said "how to dribble the ball".

Practice was from 6-7:40. Way too long. But the guy had all the kids in the "ready position" (fielding position) when the kids were hitting. Also kept saying "ball on the tee" which got the kids attention to the batter.

Should be fun.

Back on topic, no DB parents. Lots of laughs.

I was at T-Ball practice watching my boy do....stuff, yesterday.

God bless a coach that can semi-hold the attention of a bunch 4-5 year olds for that amount of time. They get no complaints or suggestions from me...

Yeah. They like to kick dirt and play. So I'm not really looking for too much.

My son seems to be slightly more interested this year as opposed to last. Haven't had any crazy parents so far...

I started T-Ball the summer I turned 6...after 1st grade.
4 and 5 year olds? just seems like a ploy to get money into the park districts and townships. isn't this what soccer is for? let the kids run around a kick a ball.
