Sports and other activities (Taekwondo in my sons case) help with focus more than building a solid athletic foundation.

well, since you inquired....

I played everywhere once because I could. Always batted 3rd and would steal a base a game.
I was best in RF and CF because I could catch & track batted balls, and judge their distances well. Plus, I was fast as shit for a little white guy and had a strong arm. I was a damn good pitcher as well. I can't compare to the kids that are coming out now hitting 90, but my fastball would hit 80 on occasion. Not great, but I had 4.25 pitches. The 0.25 is for the 10ish knuckle balls I threw my senior year.
I was scheduled to tryout for a walk on spot at UIC in the spring of 1994 but got spine cancer instead.
(My Coach in H.S. played at UIC).

So, yeah...I was almost good enough to maybe play at a low D-1 school.

Yea and practice was actually SCEHDULED from 6-8 . And right at the beginning of practice he said to all the parents "We won't be here until 8, don't worry". So he was kind enough to shave off 20 minutes.

He addressed the parents for about 20 minutes. Little too talky for my tastes. He seems like a good guy though.

I'm with KI, I don't get involved in t-ball not my area. I helped with Basketball and that was too much fun. We had a game at the end of the year parents vs. kids and there was a douchebag father who was throwing up three pointers and blocking (honest to god...blocking!) kids shots...they were five year olds. He was playing as if it was game 7 of the NBA finals.
Not surprisingly, his kid had behavioral issues.

This is our first Spring without a diamond sport in over a decade. Enjoy every minute of the practices, games, concession stand, etc., it goes by way too fast!

My role in the early years was always to be the catcher-gear-guy volunteer at games (all three kids proudly wore the tools of ignorance). Find that person early in the season and help them out with a regular, well-communicated catching rotation and your inning changes will be a breeze

There are towns who take 3 year holds. I know of one who was two until mid season

I coach my daughters 10 u team as well. We made the overly hyper Dad a coach after he wanted to murder the former leauge president for not at least giving our girls a medal for finishing third in a six team tourney that we had no buisiness finishing third in. Only the top two teams got a reward. He is a great guy just got caught up in the moment. I have had some of these young ladies since TBall and it is a treat to watch them grow up and as the weak get weeded out of even wanting to play anymore. We have a system where if you keep coaching the girls can request that they play for you as they move up in age. If they do not or their parents do not they go back to a draft type situation. Only lost two girls in 5 years. The two I lost I was not sorry to see go because of the parents.

Our fielding practices started with taking ground balls without our gloves (and I'm not talking about gently rolling the ball) after which we'd take our positions and go through a regular "infield". His son was at third base and the first ball hit to him went right threw his legs, enraged coach hit another ball except this time it was twice as hard and he jumped out of the way. Now he was really pissed at the words that came out of his mouth will never be forgotten by anyone on that field. "FIFTY HOT ONES COMING AT YA!"

He proceeded to take a full bucket of balls and hit screaming one hoppers and line drives at his defenseless son at third base. He tried to deflect the first few but they were coming too hard and fast. All he could do was curl up into a fetal position as balls whizzed by his head and occasionally ricocheted off various parts of his body. We all stood and watched frozen with fear as this homicidal manic our parents trusted to teach and nurture drilled deadly weapons at his son. Now you may think this would be considered child abuse but this was the 80's and you'd have to drag your kid behind your car in front of a police station and maybe someone would say something.

Amazingly before the season started the returning parents tried to get him kicked out of the league but MY father stood up and basically said "Do you want your boys to grow up to be pussies". So if anyone ever yells "FIFTY HOT ONES COMING AT YOU!" run fast and far away.

we had a drill in h.s. where we would take one hop infield grounders at 60' (radius along the pitchers mound) off a fungo bat....which is why the lower cartilage in my septum is slightly deviated to the left.

The Other Coach on our team is the old guy who runs the leauge. He's been great, he teaches them good form and mixes in some silly stuff to keep the kids interested.

My daughter is crushing the ball this year. Finally got comfortable using her entire arm length for the swing instead of the wrist/forearm thing kids do


We have 3 kids on our team who I think will be a handful. One of them was playing with my daughter at the park and was nearly in tears because she spun him too fast (not fast) on the spinny thing.

And the travesty of it? He's good and could be very good.

Yeah, that's a good drill.

Our other coach worked with all the kids on extending their arms on a swing.

I was glad, because Im always weary of paying more attention to my kid than the others. I mean coaching wise.

You call yourself "Coach"? Very normal.

Top Ten Good and Bad things about Coaching T ball this year

1. The three specific times I have suggested adjustments to a kids swing and it immediately showed results including the kid smiling the whole time they're running the bases
2. Adam AKA Roid Era. Kid crushes everything. And is the most well behaved one of the bunch
3. Joe, the mini Crusher. Smallest kid on the team, hits a ton and like Adam a great listener.
4. The parents have been helpful. At this age, most parents come to every game and practice and they have been a big help
5. Coach Michelle is hot and a fellow single parent. (and her daughter acted as my wingman asking to set up a play date with my daughter)

The Bad

1. The one mom who is the most involved (made the snack schedule, shows up to every game and practice, works the concession stand) has by far the worst acting kid, and apparently doesnt notice.
This kid has punched other kids without his mom saying a word. (I sat him down for that one)
2. The guy who runs the league was our head coach and stopped showing up after game one. This would have been and eventually was fine, but it would have been nice if he gave us a heads up that he was only in for the beginning and end of year.
3. 5 year old with a serious caffiene addiction. One of our kids brings a 20 oz soda with him to every game which has caused problems including the day the kid from #1 spilled his pop and the pop drinker was inconsolable for the rest of the game. (Literally in tears)
4. T Ball all star game. It shouldnt exist. But if it does, it certainly shouldnt be kid voting. The other coach declined and said his kid wont be there if he makes it. I said Id rather not vote and just gave the names of kids who havent caused problems or missed a game.
5. The mom who takes indirect shots at other kids behavior (I told you not to sit by him Peter!!) even though her kid causes as many problems as any of them.



All in all, a good fun year. The kids have gotten better, understand the game and many of them are ready for live pitching.

The best part is we dont keep score or have outs. (Even if a kid gets thrown out he stays on base)

Im not in love with those rules, but pretty silly that the All Star game is going to be regular three out baseball.

Hey kids remember the last 10 weeks? Yeah, forget that shit.

AS games for Tball are a joke. Have an end of the year picnic or pizza party and give every kid a small trophy.

How old are these kids? Because I think that by the time they are in first grade or so, score and outs should be kept.

Mostly 1st grade and Kindergarteners.

Id like to keep outs. The only issue is they are so rare the kid WOULD feel singled out.
