I've been enjoying the "behind the scene" type documentaries that ESPN shot for some of the key elements of the series like "the Straw" interview.
How many times are we going to go over this? You're only about 20 years off on my Red Sox loyalty.

You have to understand that most Red Sox fans I've met in my lifetime became fans because their fathers were Red Sox fans. In that way, Red Sox fandom is almost like an inherited mental illness.

I just haven't known many people (from Illinois of all places!) who have voluntarily made such a choice. Let the record reflect that I respect the longevity of your misguided, and geographically erroneous, choice.

I used to love the Red Sox. It seemed like the late 90's became the era for Red Sox pride in their unhappy plight. They and the Cubs seemed to take a similar marketing plan at that point: embrace being a lovable loser, market an outdated stadium, become a regional team, target casual fans/women with the circuses rather than the bread. That is why they lost me. I chose to recognize sustained excellence instead.

This is going to be a great AL race for that wildcard with the Yankees looking like the Yankees again, but having to overcome the Indians or Tigers will be a difficult challenge....

He only has one way to go. It's unreasonable to think he can keep his ERA below 1 for another 30 IP, but I also don't think he'll go Contreras on me and post a 12+ for a month
There is something deceptive about his delivery that the league hasn't figured out yet. His stats through 200 AB against him are simply phenomenal.

The only thing that sucks is that it doesn't matter. Yeah, their fans can go back and forth, and ESPN can play it to death, but both are going to the playoffs.

When this particular thread began (July 19, 2007), the glorious Yankees were a putrid 49 wins and 45 losses, 6.5 games out of both the Division lead and the Wild Card.

Since then, they have gone on a rather glorious 41 wins and 20 losses tear, and, as I predicted they would, have most certainly qualified for postseason glory. In addition, les glorieux have placed me with a 25% shot at a fantastic gift certificate to Blain's Farm & Fleet.

There is, however, much to be determined in the remaining 6 games.

Point 1: The glorious Yankees are not permitted to play your Red Sox in the Divisional Series.

Point 2: I would not care to see the Angels in same.

Point 3: Unlike Custer, I do not fear the Indians.

Point 4: The National League is apparently permitting the woeful Cubs to participate in their playoffs. This, of course, is an embarrasing testament to the, ahem, "quality" of that league. Let us just say that we should dispense with all formality, and the American League Champion should be immediately crowned the World Series Champion.

How do you feel that your Carmines stack up against the Angels/Indians?

Why travel if you don't have to.
They hit the Sox starters harder than the Indians did, but didn't do much against the main pen guys. Since Tavarez & Wakefield won't be taking the mound, I'm not really looking at their starts.
On the up side to that match up - Ortiz killed the Angels this year something like .370 ba 3 or 4 homers 15 rbi.

The indians match up is a better one for the Sox.
Both Schill & Becks shot them down & Manny kills their pitching (when healthy).

I'm worried about the 7th & 8th innings.
Timlin should be able to help out and take some of the load off Okajima who has looked tired in the 2nd half.
It looks like Gagne is French for "washed up", and my Papelboner has experienced a little shrinkage recently, but we should be OK.

I'm hoping the Yanks have to go out west just because they seem to have an issue with that match up.
Should be a fun October, with a new hero emerging in New England - Jacoby Ellsbury.
