Of course he wouldn't be gone.....NOBODY HAD HIM ON THEIR FUCKING BOARD FOR THE 1ST ROUND !!!!!!!!

This could not have gone any worse.

This seems to be the difference between Ted Thompson and Phil Emery:

Thompson, who took two defensive linemen in last year’s draft with Jerel Worthy (second round) and Mike Daniels (fourth round), said he did not go into Thursday night set on taking a defensive player.

“We didn’t go into it like that today, not at all,” Thompson said. “Especially early in the draft, you’re concentrating on quality as much as you can.”

and you just know the Pack will make a really smart move like trading up to earlier in the second round to get Lacey, thus getting both a top DE and a guy they would have been happy to choose in the 1st.

This is what the Bears should have done with Long.

I'd probably have a stiffy tonight if they had drafted Floyd and Long.

Its times like these that make me happy I focus my energy on White Sox baseball during April/May. I'm by no means a college FB guy or a draft guru, but this pick at #20 seems to be just mind numbingly stupid.

Maybe Emery just wants to see what Jay Cuter is really made of with some WR targets and a decent Oline? Would they actually let him just walk if he puts up similar numbers to the last couple seasons?

I dunno. The one thing I do know from my time on the board here is that good, dolphin knows his Bears drafts. And if he's upset, it can't be a good thing for the Beloved.

Anyway, Peavy tonite so I'll read about all this bullshit over the weekend.

So, every reaction to this pick has been negative. Can anyone explain to the most casual of football fans (me) exactly why this was a bad pick?

Because he is a few years older than a normal college player, he was projected to go later in the draft, he has only played 11 games of Div 1 football, only has 5 starts, doesnt really have a position, is too tall to play guard. That's just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are a ton of other reasons...

Bleacher Report grades....

Need: A

Value: D+

Fit: A

This run on offensive linemen is embarrassing, and it's a bit of a shock to the many analysts who thought that offensive linemen weren't as important as other positions on the football field. The pick actually grades out higher than Pugh because Long is a much better fit for the Bears. Still, another huge reach for a team because it's so desperate to protect its franchise passer.

It is bad on a couple of levels:

1. Overdraft: the guy was not projected to go in the first round. He was the 8th OL taken so there were plenty of teams looking for OL help and none found him worthy of that pick. The last three OL picked (Pugh, Long, Fredrick) all look like reaches in the first round which indicates that teams were getting desperate. The run on OL and O in general left a glut of D players available at their pick. There were top 2 players at almost every position available when the Bears drafted, and they really do have a need acros the board. They had the ability to add general talent with players no one projected they could hope to get but instead focused on a depleted pool at a specific position.

2. Long himself: almost 25 years old and still a project. Not much OT experience. Not from a pro style offense. Great measurables without commensurate on field production. Got kicked out of Florida State. Turned down the White Sox

Maybe he's a grinder and chicago tough.

That really is a fair analysis. They did have a need. He should fit the need, although I would only give an A to a guy who you know today is the starter, which Long is not. The value sucked. I also think Long is better than Pugh.

I think Hank covered the player. Emery most likely could have drafted Long in the second, and made a trade to add more picks.

I don't think the guy is a stiff. You just could have done so much more with that pick.

The tapes I saw on Youtube, pretty much it looked like he was toying with the competition. I watched about 10 minutes which must have been pretty much every play he had at Oregon.

I'm trying to find the YouTube video where he leaps out of a full swimming pool. If he can do that, there's no way he will fail.

Long time O line coach Tony Wise loves him

Quote:
(CBS) If you want feel good about the Bears first-round selection Kyle Long, just talk to veteran offensive line coach Tony Wise, who worked the 24-year-old offensive lineman out in preparation for the Senior Bowl.

Wise, who has been coaching offensive lineman since 1974, including a six-season stint with the Bears in the mid 1990s, had only good things to say about Long’s athletic ability and potential.

“I tried to catch him up on what to expect at the Senior Bowl, the drills they do at the Senior Bowl,” Wise told The Mully and Hanley Show. “I just worked some pass protection stuff (with him.) After working with him, I told people that I talked to that I’d put the guy at left tackle. He has that kind of ability. He’s too downward to play guard.”

In a bit of a shocking revelation, Wise even said he thinks Long, 6-foot-6, 313 pounds, has all the ability that No. 1 & No. 2 overall selections, Luke Joeckel and Eric Fisher, demonstrate.

“I don’t want to insult anybody, but guards are a dime-a-dozen,” Wise said. “Guys with Kyle’s height and his reach and his ability to change directions and run, those guys don’t come along very often. I’ve seen film on some of these guys, and people are going to call me crazy, but I’d stack him up against (Luke Joeckel of Texas A&M and Eric Fisher of Central Michigan). The only thing they did, is they played left tackle their entire career.”

I heard most of Yelly and Hanley's interview with Tony Wise this morning and while he was initially surprised that Long went at #20 he did have many positive things to say about him, but they were all based on his athletic ability and potential. Howie called Wise and asked him to work with Kyle before the Senior Bowl. Wise said that based on his size and athletic ability he's too big and talented to play G and has the potential to be very good at LT. He even said he compared favorably to the guys from A&M and Western Michigan who were drafted much higher.

I didn't catch the whole thing but I think that was the gist of it. I'd like to go back and listen to the podcast to hear the whole thing.

Good stuff.

He definitely comes from good football stock.

Maybe it will turn out better than most of us think.

Wise spent maybe a week at the most with him.

I wonder why this extraoridnary talent could only start 4 games in college, none of them at LT.

Consider for a moment the lack or either motivation or intelligence it takes for a kid to fail out of FSU as a freshman as a football player. I AM SUCK made it through four years at the school.
