U.S. Cellular is in the process of selling their service in my area to Sprint.

I've heard Sprint is awful but have no idea if its true or not. My current phone phone wont work once the switch happens.

1. I have to get a new phone. iPhone5 is an option...so is everything else.
2. I can decline the switch to Sprint if I want without penalty and go with whomever.

Any advice?

I thought this was going to be about renaming the White Sox ballpark.

Switch to Verizon so you don't have to deal with the bullshit that is Sprint.

Only gays and chicks get iPhones. They are overpriced, under-featured crap.

Go Android or even Windows 8 phone. Nokia's Windows 8 phones can match the best Android devices--but cost far less up front. And the Windows 8 interface is snappy. Android's start to bog down as you load more apps.

If coverage is a priority, AT&T and Verizon have the best coverage.

If you have multiple lines, AT&T is a good option, as they have the $10 per extra line family-plan set up. I have 4 lines on my account--all smart phones with unlimited messaging and max data--and the bill comes out to around $55 (incl tax) per line/device. Would probably be at least 70$ plus tax individually. Likely more as the unlimited messaging costs the same but is for whatever reason shared across up to 5 devices.

If you just have a single line/device, you'll probably pay less via Sprint. I have no idea about Sprint's coverage tho. I think T-Mobile and
AT&T share networks? So T-Mobile might have good coverage as well.

I'm on the same boat you are. I'm waiting to see what "deals" Sprint has that are "exclusive" for USC customers.

I've heard that Sprint is crap, but I've also heard otherwise. Verizon seems to cost a small fortune, AT&T is AT&T, & while T-Mobile is the most affordable, they seem to have issues.

Sprint is supposed to "improve" w/ this sale, since they're getting USC's towers. However, since I've moved to my current place I can't get much of a signal anyways, so I don't imagine it being much better w/ Sprint.

Sprint blows. Forget the I Phone. Its waaay overrated. Get the Samsung Galaxy 3 or 4. Its the best phone on the market.

Your options are:

1. Verizon
2. AT&T
3. Sprint
4. TMobile
5. Lesser carrier such as Cricket
6. Prepaid

The GF has an iPhone so, I know what it can and cannot do. the Galaxy 4S looks pretty damn sweet though.
After reading up on it, I have a feeling I'll be going to Verizon, but we'll see.

K just found out the Galaxy 4S isn't coming out on Verizon til the end of May. They are taking pre-orders now, apparently.

Go no-contract T-Mobile. About $53 /month for Android with an acceptable level of 4G data.

I think Sprint has a no contract deal too for $50 a month plus taxes. Verizon has excellent coverage but they charge a line access fee and then a separate fee for the data too. So everything is $70 a month and up.

I will be switching from US Cellular and it really bothers me that it's almost impossible to buy a flip phone. I hate touch screens and I don't need any data.

Flip phones are still out there, just not as many. Many carriers who offer free phones w/ contract do offer a flip phone.

As for me, I'm waiting out for Sprints deal. I'm leaning towards T-Mobil, if only for the price.

I've been with Sprint for almost 13 years and they were fine for the first 12 years. This last year has been filled with nothing but problems.

Will US Cellular field become Sprint Field? Or Dish Field? I'm not sure if corporate naming rights automatically transition to the new corporate parent or not.

Sprint isn't buying US Cellular, just their coverage area from about St. Louis up to Milwaukee. USC will still operate in other parts of the country. From what I've read, USC plans on retaining the naming rights to the Cell. I know, it doesn't make any sense to me neither.

I've been a Sprint customer for about three years and the only time I have had any problems was last summer when they were upgrading/adding new towers. I had either poor or no reception in my house for about a month. I read about other people who had much worse problems for a longer period of time, so I guess I was pretty fortunate. Since then, I haven't had any complaints about their service.

We have "months" to switch over so, I would imagine there will be reviews from people who have switched before I actually have to do it.

Regardless, pretty sure the Galaxy 4S is in my future.

The White Sox insist that U.S. Cellular will continue to sponsor their ballpark, but guys, you're right. Corporate sponsors change the name of their stadiums & arenas all the time.

Cases in point...Boston's currently named TD Garden was once called the Shawmut Center, and Philadelphia's currently named Wells Fargo Center was called First Union Center at one time, too. Also, I heard talk that Chicago's own United Airlines contract to sponsor the current home of the Bulls & Blackhawks is set to expire next year. If United takes their name off United Center, what would they rename it? I'm just sayin'...They change stadiums & arena names all the time.

Why do I need to buy a new phone?

Wouldnt not being having to buy a new device be the ultimate in SMOOTH TRANSITION?

It's a internal hardware design that only compatible on the US Cellular network. It's not an "unlocking" thing. So, have to buy a Sprint phone.

But, yeah...that would make things easier just to start getting a new bill and not have to make a phone purchase.

Yeah, US Cellular phones are made to only work w/ their system. I'm not too pissed about that, since the last phone I got from them was @ best sub-par. My best phones from them were Motorolas (Hello, Moto), but this Samsung can go pound sand.

You don't have to buy a phone from the carrier. You can buy the phone on your own and not do a contract or pay for the phone monthly.

Sprint did not buy the towers in this deal. Only the RF spectrum and the subscribers in what used to be the PrimeCo coverage area along with the St. Louis market. US Cellular still has control of their network equipment and will sell that and the towers they own in separate transactions.

Sprint does indeed suck. I switched to Verizon as soon as I heard it was a done deal. I have seen many industry reports over the years and Sprint was always towards the bottom, in terms of dropped calls. USC and Verizon often flip flopped 1 and 2 in this market.

US Cellular will continue to have the naming rights to the ballpark. Their corporate office is still in Chicago. It was here long before they had a presence in Chicago. The reason for that is that they are owned by TDS whose corporate office is downtown.

What network/phone you should move to really depends on what services you desire and where you intend to use the phone most. I chose Verizon because now, they will by far have the best network in the area and I travel a lot so I can still get 4G while on the road.

i had sprint for a long time. their 3g data speeds are slow as shit, but it IS a reliable data stream. good enough to stream internet radio just about anywhere, even if youre roaming.

i went to tmo, to get a better phone and 4g for a low cost. fantastic speeds and coverage in madison, absolutely useless even 2 miles outside of town. i let my plan expire, because out in the sticks here it doesnt even work anyway. i just pay for charter internet and my phone works through that.
