The numbers love him. One of the best value picks in the draft. Well done.

Measurables have always been fine. He was just kind of a disappointment for Georgia. But those are the types of people you draft in the sixth round.

Looking over this draft and free agency - even money says Shea McClellin is cut before the 2014 season.

He was rated high on the Bears board.

They had him playing two-gap end at 260 last season. I'd be stunned if he didn't at least turn into a productive situational player.

I'll adjust my expectations accordingly. For these guys I count making the team as a tiny win.

I don't see how. It's the only pick that wasn't a complete reach.

The fact that this is the most stable pick speaks volumes of Emery's draft this year.

Meh. You do not know enough about the draft or any of the players to say that with any confidence.

No one does, but I know a reach when I see one. And last year, most of the picks in the late round failed to even make the team, so it's not like we're dealing with a great track record or anything.

I think some people are giving Emery way too much leeway with very little achievement, especially after two iffy first round picks.

You don't even make any sense in that first sentence. No one knows but yet you know??? :?

Long was clearly a reach.

But the remainder of the draft was not full of reaches.

Pretty much after the 2nd round there is just a big jumble of guys. Some experts have a guy ranked as a 3rd rounder, the next expert may have that guy as a 6th rounder. So pretty much anyone that is drafted by any team can be labeled as a reach by someone.

Evey year I read about these late round picks. They sound great. All conference, etc. I figure they should at least make the team. Usually not.

I'm just going by gut feeling, and this feels like a sht draft. We can play the wait and see card all we want, but I really don't see any of these picks lighting it up year one or that much down the road for that matter.

If this draft yields one probowler, I'll eat my hat, because unless Long comes in as a beast in his first full year with a position on the O-line, it's going to take a miracle.

And I know the whole draft wasn't full of reaches, I probably over stated a bit, but when you don't have a 3rd rounder, a reach like Long hurts way more.

Emery better hope he's great. That's all I'll say.

This guy seems like a freak athletically. Why didn't he produce to the level of his athleticism in college?

Miscast. See supra in re: two-gapping.

Good enough talent to make a team and then spend the rest of the season wondering where that guy went.

Jim Miller just said (on Mac & Meatpants) that Washington fell because he refused to work out for teams as a 4-3 defensive end because he wants to play OL in a 3-4 scheme.

Miller loves this pick based on Washington's performance at the Senior Bowl, where he "destroyed everyone" playing a 4-3 defensive end...

We may have won the 6th round!

So he doesn't want to play 4-3 DE but we drafted him to play 4-3 DE.

He doesn't have a choice where he's going to play. Plus this will make things easier next year when we install the 3-4.

DING! this is why we didn't draft that DT everyone was clamoring for.

Was bored this afternoon and did some reading on some of our draft picks.

Found this intersting

Quote:
Washington's athleticism at the combine was far superior than his production at Georgia, where he had a half sack last season. If the Bears can tap into some of his incredible power and explosion, Washington would be a sixth-round steal.

ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper said he thought Washington would be a second-round pick, and categorized his fall to the sixth as the biggest surprise fall of the draft.

In the 40-yard dash, Washington ran a 4.54. Among defensive ends, that ranked tied for third at the combine. Only Barkevious Mingo, the Browns' sixth overall pick and the Bengals' Margus Hunt, the 53rd pick, ran faster. Each had a 4.53. Dion Jordan, who the Dolphins picked third overall, also ran a 4.54.

Every front-seven player at the combine is tested on speed of pass rush moves. In swim-rush right, Washington timed at 1.85. Among linemen, that was the second-best time after Mingo, who had a 1.84.

Washington also had a vertical jump of 39 inches. Only one front-seven player at the combine, Patriots' second-round choice Jamie Collins, did better at 411/2 inches.

Washington bench-pressed 225 pounds 36 times. The only defensive end or linebacker who topped him was Hunt, with 38 reps.

Here's another quirk about Washington's workouts. He didn't run the three-cone drill or the 20-yard shuttle at the combine, wisely as it turned out. He later did both at Georgia's pro day.

His three-cone time of 7.47 would have placed last among defensive ends who ran the drill at the combine, and his 20-yard shuttle time of 4.74 would have been second worst.

So what that tells us is his change of direction ability and stop/start ability are well below average. But he can move forward pretty well.

The combine categorized Washington as a linebacker. But at 6-4, 265, he clearly has the size of a defensive end for a four-man front and was significantly heavier than both Mingo and Jordan. And given what his athletic tests reveal, his only hope in the NFL probably is as a player who moves forward on every play.
