LeRoy Butler supports Jason Collins, upsets church

NBA player Jason Collins received plenty of support from the professional sports community after coming out as gay in a Sports Illustrated cover story this week.

For many athletes, that support came via Twitter. Former Green Bay Packers safety LeRoy Butler was one of those athletes, tweeting a message of congratulations to Collins.

It was a gesture of goodwill that led to some trouble. We'll let Butler explain ...

Wow, I was schedule to speak at a church in WI, and a member said that the pastor wants to cancel my event, I said ok why?
- LeRoy Butler (@leap36) April 30, 2013

Then I was told, because I said congrats to Jason Collins on twitter, I said really? we have a contract, he said check the moral cause,
- LeRoy Butler (@leap36) April 30, 2013

FYI the fee was 8500$,then I was told if i removed the tweet, and apologize and ask god forgiveness, I can have the event, I said no,
- LeRoy Butler (@leap36) April 30, 2013

Butler elaborated on the situation in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Wednesday.

"This is what bothers me the most," Butler said. "They said, 'If you ask for forgiveness and remove the tweet and you say something to the effect that you don't congratulate (Collins) then we'll let you do the engagement and get the speaker's fee', and I said 'I'm not doing that.'

"Every gay and lesbian person will say 'You know, LeRoy doesn't speak up for the weak or the silenced. He doesn't stand for anything as a man and he did it for money.' Why would you ask me to reduce my integrity like that?"

Butler later tweeted he received an apology from the church, but said it was "mainly thanking me for not releasing the church name."

That sounds about right.

Classy.

Why are they paying an NFL player 8 thousand dollars to speak at their church?

No poor people in that community I guess

Right, the members are the people who moved and invested wisely.

On the contrary, it was probably a poor congregation that pooled the proceeds from illegally selling their LINK cards to Arab storekeepers in order to bring in the NFL player.

Popular former Packers are treated like gods in this state. The most popular can make a very good living
after they hang up their cleats and shoulder pads.

Is it "Lee-Roy" or "L'Roy"?

LeRoy is beloved in Wisconsin. He, of course, is credited with performing the first Lambeau Leap.

Aside from his outstanding career with the Packers, it's his life story that's even more impressive.

And that's what his speech was going to be about - his life. From what I understand, it's very inspirational and moving. At no point was he going to bring up the Jason Collins situation.

LeRoy is often heard on WSSP 1250 AM Milwaukee, and as such, they've had the inside scoop on this story for the last couple of days.

As usual, LeRoy took the high road during this ordeal.

As much as the church deserves the DB nomination, LeRoy, even moreso, deserves a Shoutout!

Thanks SHARK!!

I don't think that they deserve a nomination. They should really be commended for sticking to what they believe even if they are ridiculed for it. If he believes that then he shouldn't speak there. It's wrong to bring in someone to speak at your church who doesn't reflect your values.

A certain church in the Chicago area brought Bill Clinton in to talk about his faith and it offended a lot of the church people and rightly so.

So most churches would be silent and empty?

They believed so much in their conviction they thanked Butler for not releasing the church's name.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

The Church is for people who sin.

They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

Hipocracy is a terrible thing. These people decided that the "sin" of homosexuality is worse than the sins that their Pastor and everyone else in that church commit in their daily lives...

What good would releasing the name do? You're going to have all these people using the media to threaten and harass them because they don't worship the god of homosexuality and tolerance.

It's not hypocrisy to not have someone speak because they don't reflect your values. If you guys are going to jump on this church you need to nominate all the people who boycott Chick-Fil-A. They tried to put a restaurant out of business because they didn't like their family values. That's a lot worse than not having someone speak at your church.

These *** right activists are nuts. That church doesn't need people like that harassing them. Did anyone hear about the guy in Washington D.C. who tried to attack people and kill them?

Yes it is. Their Pastor and everyone else in that church have done and continue to do things that go against the teachings of Christ. They don't consider them "big sins", though.

It's not that the guy is banned from attending the church. They just don't want him to speak there. Speaking of Nazis why would should a synagogue allow a Nazi to speak at their place of worship? Or why should a black church allow a white Supremacist access to their pulpit?

The *** rights movement has caused division in a lot of churches including Episcopalians who have left the denomination because it decided to ordain openly *** clergy. It's not that those people hate gays. The issue is their church is ordaining people who compromise their beliefs. The *** rights movement is a violation of conscience for all sorts of religious groups in the same way that the conscience of Catholic organizations is violated when those organizations are forced to provide contraceptive and abortions for employees.

Just because you are standing by your beliefs doesn't mean that the media should have a right to make you a target for those *** rights supporters who vehemently hate all those who disagree with them. Everyone's truth is all relative until you say you disagree with the *** rights movement. Then, instead of respecting someone's position it's perfectly acceptable to mock, belittle, slander and if all fails threaten with the law, with violence, and other forms of intimidation.
