In a humorous way of course. Pretty sure there is no correlation between your coaching and his. Now if you are drinking on the bench, let me know if you need a 1st base coach.

Well, maybe it's just me. I actually lived in one of the worst ghettos in DC for three years. Experienced it plenty of times. I taught elementary school there.

WTF? Who doesn't want to hang out in the heart of Roseland on 111th & Michigan on a Saturday night?

My initial reaction to this story was "shame on the Payton parents" for not letting their kids play. Then more details came out and I changed my stance.

The game was scheduled late, just three days prior to the game. And it was a night game. There would not be transportation provided.

As a parent that is a logistical problem. Particularly if you have more than one child, or had already made plans/commitments.

My issue isn't with the school or the field, as it sits on the old Mendel Prep campus and is a beautiful facility. My issue is with having to get home after the game, and that falls on the coach. The coach shouldn't have accepted a game, a night game, with three day's notice and no transportation. Had he communicated with parents he would have known those students who wouldn't have been able to attend. It was a poor decision on his part and when reporters became involved he should have stepped up and been accountable.

Lets see, CPS wants to close dozens of schools on the south side making kids have to walk a few more blocks to go to other schools. Those kids parents have a huge shit fit, protest , march , tell everyone now they will have to walk through dangerous areas to go to these other schools and they are just "concerned parents" protecting their kids. Parents of the kids from Payton however, are just fear mongering, racist , lily white pussys ( because Im sure there are no black kids on the team or parents ) for essentially doing the same thing. Got it.

One of the best lessons sports teaches you is when you get the "Don't do these certain things when we are at this school" talk. It ended up being legitimate as the school actually had ropes around the school crest in the main hallway.

Ironically though, the school that didn't really freak us out very much is the one that ended up with the opposing team following us home and getting out of the car to "intimidate" us when we were stopped a railroad crossing.

The most shameful aspect is that they threw the coach in the grease for telling the truth.

So it is normal for CPS players to find their own way to and from games?

Let's see...Halsted st. Bus, that would only take a couple of hours.

We had to find rides. Between the coach, a couple of players who happen to be lucky enough to have cars of their own, or maybe a mom or dad of a couple players offering to drive, is how we made it to to away games.

Damn, growing up in the hinterlands of Algonquin, I had no idea.

That is crazy....I can't wrap my mind around it. I could see traveling a few miles, but that has to be 15-20 miles!!

So basically most people here would let their kids play anywhere in the Unites States as long as its a sanctioned H.S. game?

There is no neighborhood dangerous enough to avoid?

I'd be more worried about my kid getting killed in traffic accident traversing 20 miles of Chicago streets in a van full of kids driven by somebody I don't even know.

Correct.

I am not aware of any incident of a participant being killed during a high school baseball game.

So, are there neighborhoods you would avoid in general outside of H.S. sports?

Take the kids for a ride through compton in it's gang heyday?

I have taken my children on unguided walking tours of Pullman. I pointed out where daddy helped the strip club operate.

Playing sports at a school is not randomly walking alone.

Sounds like good parenting to me but hey, its not a real pc thought so it must be wrong.

Would you let your kids do the same "unquided" (and unescorted) tour at 10:00 p.m. on a Saturday night? I suppose 10:00 p.m. and night are redundant, so I would assume that arriving home around midnight is perfectly cool too?

Im torn on this. My dad made sure I was never going to be sheltered. I was around all different kinds of people growing up, but I always maintained that there are still dangerous places that should be avoided if possible.

Conns, I get that its different than walking alone but isnt there quite a few instances of violence at and surrounding basketball and football games?

No, I would go to the game.

High school games are 7 innings and don't take three hours to play. It does not take two hours to get home from Brooks to Payton. Even if it did, for the sake of argument, I would have no problem with my child, THREE MONTHS AWAY FROM HIS FIRST DAY OF COLLEGE, coming home at midnight, on a Saturday, when I knew where he was.

RPB,

So you wouldn't let your kid play at Mount Carmel on a Friday Night?

Im aware that's not rational
