Actually, he would be a good one to target. Probably willing to sign a 1 year deal at fairly low money, to prove himself healthy and get a longer contract. If he had a great (or very good) 3 months, then he could bring a decent prospect. I would definitely contact him.

There is zero chance of him pitching next season. His procedure involves fixing an additional structure aside from the UCL. 14 months minimum.

That would have hurt more several years ago. These days teams are hanging on to their good young pitching the way a baby hangs onto a rattle. You've got to have guys like Floyd and Danks if you're going to win, but I don't believe anyone is going to give you much to rent them for a couple months. You could have probably gotten someone like Anthony Rizzo for him though.

By the time Floyd returns the Cubs better be competing for a wildcard/division and have no use of his services.

My contention all along was that Floyd is a guy who could be replaced fairly easily, and I haven't backed down from that.

You're not really so wrong, Frank, but the difference between guys like Floyd, Jackson, Sanchez who have heavy stuff is that they have potential to do a lot more. Maybe they will and maybe the won't. But I'd bet anything I have that Dylan Axelrod never wins 17 games in a season. He might not win 17 in his career.

Gavin Floyd had a flash in the pan year in 2008. Good for him. His high water mark since that time is 12 wins, with an above .500 record only once, and never has gone over 200 innings since.

There is at least a realistic chance that either Axelrod or Quintana might get 12 wins this year.

Gavin Floyd is just a guy, nothing more. He is a replaceable 3rd-4th starter, and he was even before he got hurt. Outside of a flash in the pan 2008, he never has been anything more than that and probably never will be.

Axelrod and Quintana are both guys that get the more from their abilities. Neither has exceptional stuff and both have little room for error as a result. Their ceiling is a lot lower that a guy like Floyd's, because Floyd (when healthy) has better stuff. Floyds best years may well be ahead.

Floyd will likely be back by around the All-Star game next season. After Tommy John surgery, most pitchers perform BETTER than they did before it. Floyd has a lot of ability and after the surgery, I won't be surprised if he has a couple of his best seasons. Many starting pitchers don't have their best years until they reach around 30 years old or older.
