I'm a huge Pippen guy, but the 1.8 thing was really bad. If Kukoc misses that shot, it would even be talked about more today.

There was no reason not to go to Pippen for that last play, with the game he was having up to that point. Yes, it was selfish of him to ask to sit, but I don't fault him for being pissed about the play being drawn up for Kukoc.

Being pissed is completely understandable

Not entering the game is completely unaccepatable

Oh and the fact that Kukoc was a better shooter was a good enough reason but that's neither here nor there.

No. You guys are missing the big picture here.

If Derrick doesn't play in this series, people will always say "They could have beaten the Heat if Derrick had chosen to play!". That will never go away.

Right now, you can't say that because they made the playoffs, and won in the first round.

If Derrick doesn't play in this series, it will never be forgotten unless he wins a title here.

He didn't refuse to enter the game. He asked Phil to sit him and Phil sat him.

Cmon Kid.

I loved Pippen too, but that's the same thing as refusing to enter the game

I agree with 1.8 being indefensible. That was a choice to undermine the team not in practice, not the regular season, but in the last moments of a semifinal playoff game.

We will all celebrate his return. And rightfully so. I very much want to see a Derrick Rose that has worked all of the mental kinks out...

That's your opinion and that's fine but to project that onto everyone else is wrong.

Were talking about 1.8 (and it is still frequently mentioned when Pippen comes up) 19 years later, I think its kind of a big deal

I thought we didn't have to end everything with "imo" or some sort of qualifier. It's obviously my opinion, just like everything that everyone posts here about subjective things like this.

So again...I'll say, this isn't that big of a deal. Everyone will "get over it". Not forget...they'll just get over it.

1.8 was a heat of the moment bad decision. Rose has thought about this bad decision for months.

of course the 1.8 is indefensible
but in the big picture i guess i don't see it as being THAT big of a deal
to me it's more of a meme that endured through the years
if you choose to define Pippen by that moment OK, but the fact that he accomplished so much , I don't

Another good point. One moment in one game vs. several months of stringing your teammates, your organization and your fanbase along. Rose is worse.

The good news is that everyone will now forget about Derrick "cutting fruit in bed" and cheating to get into college!

Well, I guess it's because people are explicitly saying they will never view Rose the same again and then you opine that everyone will.

Just seems weird. I believe NSD will never buy a Rose product and I definitely believe many people will look at Derrick differently

I hear what everyone is saying. And my opinion is that most, not all, are full of shit.

I contend that most people will be huge Derrick Rose fans again and this entire thing will just be a "ya remember when" sort of thing instead of a career defining moment as some are treating it right now.

If Rose doesn't win a title, what would be a bigger career defining moment than choosing not to play in a winnable series* against the Heat?

*-I don't actually think the Bulls have a good chance to win the series with or without Rose, but I'd say there is a chance.

Mr. Spark -

I fail to understand, on any level, how the weight of Scottie Pippen abandoning his teammates for 1.8 seconds of ONE game is in any way, shape, or form equal to - let alone greater - than Derrick Rose abandoning his teammates for MONTHS.

I dont think he has abandoned his team for months. Im not sure what the story is. I feel like we dont know everything.

Maybe it will end up being worse. But, Rose is at least injured. Pippen put his own pride ahead of the good of the team.

I don't buy it. He's not injured any more. Maybe a little pain. Pride is likely the reason he won't play. Either that or he's extremely weak mentally. But that doesn't really fit with his history though.

this is what i don't get it
rpb says there's some part of the story missing
i agree
people (like Hatchetman) seem to be playing both sides: one hand you believe he's not injured anymore. but you concede it doesn't jive with his history
i just think there's a decent chance that there's SOME decent explanation beyond the "he's just a pussy/mentally weak/etc." angle

no, I've always been a proponent of the "there's something we don't know" theory, because when things just don't add up, you have to be missing a variable. However, as time goes by, what the hell could it be? I thought maybe botched surgery, but no real evidence of that yet.

And that is the reason I'm not up in arms about this whole thing. He's built up enough equity with me to give him the benefit of the doubt.

There has to be something bad enough to keep him off the court. His work ethic is second to none. That is what we were always told. So all of sudden it's not? I don't buy it.

If he needs a year to be 100%, I'm cool with it. I'm not cool with him playing before he's ready to contribute.

my best guess. Rose & Co figured team would suck royally, perhaps missing playoffs. or worst case, an easy first-round ouster. So his plan was to miss the whole year, come back stronger than ever and make a huge "I'm Baaack" kind of a splash in 2013/14.

But then, team is better than he thought, wins in 1st round, team mates seem like heroic martyrs going to battle. Makes him look very bad in comparison.

Rose & Co did not plan on things unfolding this way, now they are in a bind.
