I'm looking to wire up my house for audio at some point. I'm just not sure how to go about it.

What I'd like:

-Have speakers in each room.

-Be able to play mp3 (itunes) & AM/FM/Satellite radio through all speakers, but be able to selectively turn on/off speakers.

-Ideally be able to play different sources through different speakers at the same time (i.e. Listen to AM radio in basement & mp3s in kitchen), but if not easily attainable, not a deal-breaker.

-Not spend crazy money to make it happen.

I've found this suggestion but would have some questions about it.

Do any of you experts have a cost-effective set-up that you like?

It will likely be a bit expensive. Here are a few kits:

Run about $1,500 to $2,000 for a kit. I assume wiring would be similar to what you would get with romex? Probably run it up along a stud and not through the piping.

I've seen some of those kits. I'm not THAT in love with the audio idea.

I've come across a couple of "hacks" which seem to get the job done and was just wondering if anyone here has rigged something up, for less (the "airport" idea would seem to be about $150 per room).

I'd also like to control it from an ipad/iphone.

Here's my setup. I'm pretty sure you can use it as a referendum on what not to do.

Depending on if your place is too old and want to avoid wireless... Put stereo someplace central and run speaker wires through air ducting. We do it with internet wire in old days. Don't think it would affect audio cable of decent quality.

Have you looked at Airplay or an equivalent? Airplay enabled speakers could get the audio from iTunes on a computer, and play simultaneously throughout the entire house. Can definitely turn speakers on and off. You can also then airplay to one of the speakers from an iDevice, so if for example, the kids were outside, they could use their iDevice to use the outside speaker, and you could still control the ones indoor.

This can also be accomplished by non Airplay devices if you aren't an Apple house. I think Google has something similar, and Sonos (sp?) is another option.

Nevermind, missed that initial link. That's what I was talking about.

I have Airport Expresses throughout my house, and it's made the world of difference for my home network. I haven't yet purchased speakers for each room, but I have a Jambox that I can plug in to any of the Airport Expresses if I'm in that room and want music. Can also use ATVs in this setup as well.
