I love this match-up. First off, it's always fun to play a rival. Second, Detroit is probably the softest team in the West, so the Hawks should be free from lots of hits and cheap shots. And finally, Detroit does not have the depth they used to, leaving the Hawks second tier guys to outclass the Wings.

Yeah, the Ducks were the only team in the West I really thought would beat the Hawks. Not to say I dont think they can lose but the Ducks were the ones that scared me the most.

My general feeling is that if you think your team is Cup worthy, you should be able to beat anyone. That being said, some match-ups are better than others. The key advantage to playing the Wings is that there is less chance of a goon fest. Plus I love beating them.

Detroit. The playoffs are re-seeded after the first round, so with 1, 5, 6, and 7 advancing, it'll be 1-7 and 5-6 (Los Angeles-San Jose). Still waiting on the East to finish its business tonight.

This is the last year of this format, by the way, and it's only going to get more confusing next year.

I agree with the Red Wings being a good match for the reasons stated. Also, they're not apt to run a shell, so that helps the Hawks a ton. I was scared of the Ducks, as they could score on you and knock you around. I wonder why they didn't make it out of the first round.

I've wanted to play Detroit more than any other team, with the exception of the Wild. Starting to have the ole' be careful what you wish for vibe. It's still fucking Detroit. Should be a fun series.

Leaning Hawks in 6 right now, but still want to look back a bit at the games played this season. Wings are healthier now than they were for sure.

Yes, but who are the players they got back? Bertuzzi? Samuelsson? Worrying about them was fine four years ago; we shouldn't have to now. And that defense. Holy moly.

The Wings are not a good team. They have some talent, but not nearly enough. If Crawford continues his high level of play, this shouldn't be that close. If you can't beat a 7th seeded team, then you have no business winning the Cup. I am not scared at all. It will be fun to watch their power play against our excellent penalty kill.

If they're "not a good team," how the hell did they beat Anaheim?

Right.

Jimmy Howard has been pretty good during the playoffs in his career, save last year. More than capable of 'stealing' a game of two.

Mike Babcock is an excellent coach.

These two teams know each other extremely well. Shouldn't be any surprises.

is still around and incredible at hockey.

Not arguing that the Hawks don't have more youth, talent, speed on their rosters and should win the series. Will be much more contested than people seem to think so far.

From the NHL Predictions thread...

Hockey Gay wrote:
The Ducks are a good team but their record indicates they're better than they really are. They over-achieved all season and have been playing really average hockey down the stretch. It looks like a lot of their so called depth is regressing back to where they should be while their stars, Ryan and Perry didn't have the season they should of had. Getzlaf, who had the best season of his career seems to be playing with an injury, although he has looked better in the last couple weeks of the season so he could be feeling a lot better. The Wings are looking good. Howard is playing great in net and they found a way to finish 5th in the league in defense. They look like a different team from earlier in the season. Datzyuk and Zetterberg are playing out of their minds. Out of all the upset picks that are possible, Detroit over Anaheim seems to be the most popular pick to make so far and I can see why.

I hate to be that guy who rubs it in everyone's face after the fact but I saw Anaheim as Cup pretenders the whole way. If anyone has been paying any attention to what I've been saying, which they haven't, I've said throughout the season in the games that the Ducks managed to steal from us that they wouldn't be a threat for the Hawks in the playoffs. I almost feel sad in a way that they didn't advance so they could meet the Hawks in the West Finals and prove me right. Even when I'm wrong, my information is right when it comes to hockey. I don't just look at box scores and stats and form opinions, I actually watch the games. Everyone pay more attention to me. Thanks.

I'm sorry that I kind of acted like shakes in this post. I won't let it happen again.

They were outscored in the series, but they came up big when they had too. In the regular season, they were ranked 14/15th in points out of 30 teams, decidedly average. Their net goals scored/allowed wasn't all that bad, but the Hawks had a margin of over 1 and Detroit was .25.

I may be wrong, but I think you'll see a significant difference in talent levels during this series. Of course, anything can and does happen in playoff hockey.
