Do they have enough guys now for Hester not to play anywhere in the defenesive backfield? I know he was working out with the offense in the OTA's, but he was not good last year in the nickel.

Am I the only one who thinks that Tillman is horrible? This was not a smart move.

This guy's weaknesses are easily exploited by a fast Receiver and an above average Offensive Coordinator.

His coverage is average, especially with a quick receiver. I think his tackaling skills are above average. They didn't over pay too much did they?

Peanut is an above-average cornerback who excels against larger, more physical, receivers As a number two, he is certainly an asset, and he assists on the run as well as any cornerback in the league. His contract is probably slightly less lucrative than the Vasher contract, and Angelo did a great job in both instances of getting these guys locked up now, especially with the extreme contract inflation that has been going around the league.

Teammate says LB will sign, be at camp

One of the biggest questions facing the Bears all off-season has been when linebacker Lance Briggs will end his holdout from training camp.

Maybe it won't even begin.

There were strong indications Tuesday night the two sides either were coming close to an agreement that would end a messy contract dispute or had solved it altogether.

Reached on his cell phone, Briggs said "no comment" when asked if he had agreed to sign the one-year contract tender worth a guaranteed $7.2 million and report on time Thursday to the start of training camp in Bourbonnais.

But earlier in the night a Bears teammate who had spoken with both Briggs and a league source said the linebacker had agreed to sign the deal and avoid a holdout the Bears had been dreading.

Asked about the rumors Briggs had agreed to sign the contract and report on time, the player said, "True."

Efforts to reach his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, were unsuccessful.

Rosenhaus and the Bears have continued to speak even after the July 16 deadline to work out a long-term deal for franchise players passed. After a visit to Halas Hall last month, Rosenhaus said he had presented some creative proposals to the team.

Among them were believed to be the possibility of paying Briggs a large portion of the $7.2 million up front, which would serve as a smaller signing bonus. The Bears also have offered to rescind the franchise tag on Briggs for 2008 if he agrees to end the impasse and begin what they believe can be a Super Bowl season.

A team source said it would be fair to say recent discussions left many in the organization hopeful a resolution could be reached in time for the start of camp.

It has been a busy month of planning ahead for the Bears. Locking up cornerback Charles Tillman to a six-year extension Tuesday came weeks after signing an extension with cornerback Nathan Vasher.

The Bears probably didn't envision making that type of commitment to one position group, but when Briggs turned down a long-term contract offer in 2006, the team said it was moving on to other core players.

Asked about Briggs during a teleconference, Tillman said, "I'm going to miss him."

Perhaps it won't be as long as he thinks.

I concur. They way that this position is watered-down across the league, he certainally qualifies as above-average. There's also something to be said for keeping a unit together.

But you don't keep someone around who is an obvious weak link in the chain. He can tackle... Fantastic. But it doesn't really matter when your ten yards behind the receiver when he makes the catch.

I'm happy Briggs will be around fo training camp. Though I think he is quite overrated, he fits well in this system.

He might not be the best corner in the league but he does a very good job overall (aside from the glaring Smith game and maybe a few others). I just think he's a favorite whipping boy of Bears fans, just like Jaque Jones is for Cub fans. At least Cub fans have better ammo than Bear fans for their shitting on him. Corner in the NFL is constantly under a microscope. If you don't hear his name, you forget about him, rarely see the blanket coverage pointed out on TV, and when you do hear his name VERY memorable because he got beat by a receiver. Plus it doesn't help much when the safeties behind him suck ass and one of them is the panty waisted Danieal Manning. I'm glad he's back with Vasher for the long haul. After this off season with everyone seemingly wanting out of Chicago it's good to see some guys wanting to be here. These are 2 of very few guys on this team that I think are decent guys and actually cheer for.

Ivan, I think you are, well, Crazy. Tillman is the best cornerback on the team. He is better than Vasher in both coverage and run support. Vasher excells at getting turnovers, which is very important. However, on a play by play basis both I, and I think the Bears as well, would rather have Tillman out there.

Can someone explain to me why the Bears would not franchise Briggs next year as well (barring a gentleman's agreement used as an incentive to get him in camp). It allows the Bears to retain controll over him for a trade even if they do not intend to sign him.

Tillman got beat by one of the best receivers in the NFL and everyone talks about it like Steve Smith is a nobody. Tillman was just another guy in the dust behind Steve Smith. Remember everything about the play boys.

No. I would rather eat a burnt peanut than watch one play cornerback for the Bears. I don't disagree with Dolphin that he is the best the Bears have. I just think that is faint praise.

Basically the guy is a decent tackler, is able to strip the ball every once in a while, and is able to recover fumbled balls. I am still unable to overlook his lack of speed & horrific coverage.

That sums it up. They could/would have used it again next year if he had sat out this year. Then, since he would come back for the last few games, they'd still have two eligible years to use the tag on him consecutively. The Bears had all of the leverage here.

Washington, New England, Oakland, Cincinnati, and Seattle all have good secondaries but I don’t know I’d take theirs over the Bears. I think Green Bay, especially Woodson, is overrated.

Peanut has done an above adequate job. This contract may over pay him slightly but I don’t know what the Bears would do without him. Corners will occasionally get burned it’s the nature of the position.

I don’t remember this ire over the Vasher signing and I think Tillman is the better CB. I'm fine with this.

Unless he has back problems.

man the bear bashing has got to stop! Tillman's overrated, Briggs is overrated, did we forget that we got to the SUPER BOWL riding the defenses shoulders (and hester). Who did the job for the defense last year, was it only Urlacher in your opinion? Was Hunter the key to our success? No, it was the collective group that made plays. Does anybody remember the forced fumbles he had? How do you think we had one of the best defenses in the league last year without a veteran safety. Stop hanging on one bad game against a player we should have been double covering. As I recall one of the plays looked like cover two that Mike Brown should have been over top of Smith but slipped on the play. We have a veteran of Archuleta (who i'm not wild about) mike brown coming back, danyell manning, tillman, vasher so i think we have great depth in the area and will be just fine. We need to upgrade Hunter's spot although he will do for now.
