From what I can tell in limited research its about split half with people who say you should tip the same 15-20% and those who say less.

Assuming acceptable to good service, if you can't do 20% of the pre-tax bill then don't eat out you cheap-ass.

If you have a coupon, tip on the pre-coupon total.

Ive never really worried about the pre tax amount.

If the server gets a couple extra dollars because of the tax, that's ok with me

Everyonce in a while when I leave a tip on my card after a I pay a bill, the amount never gets debited from my card. Just the original meal price gets charged.

Its like getting as with your debit card. It shows the original meal price and then a couple days later the tip gets added. Like when you get gas with your debit it takes 1 dollar and then a few days later the rest gets added.

I pay on the card and tip in cash. Its the best thing for the server. We all know they are cheating on their taxes anyway, so might as well give it to them than a % to the owner who is charging you $48 for that bone-in.

The GF waited 8 years and can vouch for me on this.
