Terry Francona can start putting together a compelling argument that he is one of those managers who makes a difference. I believe he was in the running for the job when JR "suggested" Ozzie. If not, he was certainly in the Sox organization and available to them.

Why do you think he won't be here past 3 years? Because he didn't jump at the chance to sign a 1 year extenstion? Do you think that would have been a good move on his part? Despite the friendly relationship it's still a business decision. Why sign a 1 year extension when he can wait and get 3-5 years?

Ventura doesn't strike as the kind of guy to start something then walk away from it. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he has a very long career as a major league manager.

Hmmmm...yes, I do think that is a good indicator. It's not like he responded with a demand for a three year extension. His response was pretty much indicated that he doesn't know where he will be in a couple of years. When you couple that with him not being interested in the job to begin with, I think you can make a much stronger argument that he is a reluctant manager rather than a guy who will be at the job for the long term.
