After his fourth appearance without allowing an ER, Shelby Miller is second in NL (third in ML) with a 1.82 ERA.

At 28, Callis has the Cardinals taking Gonzaga lefty Marco Gonzales, a name that has been tied to the Cardinals for the past few weeks.

A 7-run 10th, fitness friend. That GS was a SHOT. 465 feet, I think I heard. I was at Hangover 3, so at least I got to see the last few innings. It's all clicking right now, but part of me keeps waiting for the bottom to drop out with the heavy reliance on rookie pitching.

Westbrook should be back soon... and dare I say... Carpenter is being said to be feeling ok in his side sessions.

Have you seen Rosenthal at all? The high heater is well chronicled, but that change is absolutely filthy.
It's basically impossible to hit a guy that can throw this combo of pitches

This is true. I haven't seen enough of Rosenthal. Just a couple appearances. Martinez was sent down to become a starter. Is that for 2013 or 2014?

Cardinals' Chris Carpenter makes first rehab start

Veteran Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter, who's missed the entire 2013 season to date because of back and shoulder problems, made a minor-league rehab start for Double-A Springfield on Monday.

Carpenter allowed three runs, two of which were earned, and struck out five against Double-A Arkansas. Of his 54 pitches, 38 went for strikes. While the pitching line wasn't optimal, Carpenter's velocity certainly was. As Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports, Carpenter, according to a team official in attendance, touched 94 on the radar gun.

As Goold notes, Carpenter, per MLB rules regarding minor-league rehab assignments, will have 30 days until the Cardinals must either place him on the active roster or return him to the disabled list.

Carpenter, age 38, has a career record of 144-94 across parts of 15 major-league seasons. Over that span, he's pitched to a 3.76 ERA (116 ERA+).

Should Carpenter avoid a setback and make it back to the majors, then the Cardinals might deploy him as a reliever.

Its detailed in another thread Keyser created but somehow they qualify as being one of the 10 smallest market/lowest revenue teams. Obviously their track record shows they are not at a competitive disadvantage yet somehow get the 71st pick next year as a prize.

It is tied to market size and TV revenue among other things. The STL franchise should be punished for using their resources wisely? Last I checked, the St Louis area is one of the smallest media markets in the nation.

I'm not claiming that it is a perfect system, hell I don't even really understand it. Ask Selig.

But there's a lot of history that has caused the Cardinals' market to be much greater than just the greater St. Louis area. For many, many years they were the Southernmost and Westernmost franchise. Baseball, being a sport that is handed down from generation to generation, one can still find plenty of Cardinals fans in places like Oklahoma, Mississippi, Texas, and Georgia.
