He's a poor defensive player at one of the most important defensive positions and if he can't even hit .280 he's pretty much useless. Trade him.

If he wants to bat .320 and walk ten times a year tats fine but can't make outs over 70% of the time

I don't believe he will ever approach .320 or even .300 again . Think we've already seen his offensive ceiling . If he was above average to good defensively I wouldn't have a problem with his low OPS but seems like he hasn't made any adjustments to how they pitch him now. Hopefully he can get hot and so he is somewhat tradable . I think Jedstein would love to dump him

I just dont see him getting any better than what we've seen from him already. He'll need 200 plus hits a year to be around .300 because he doesnt walk. I guess .285 , 12 to 15 HR's , 30 doubles is a decent offensive season but it seems like hes a bit of a bumslayer or doesnt get the hits when they count. I dont think he's improving as a hitter and and just see him getting worse. Makes too many dumb mistakes still both in the field and on the bases. You think he'll ever approach the .308 he hit 2 years ago based on the way he's been going since?

I don't know whether he will or not, I would lean towards saying he will. But to say he just isn't going to at 23 years of age just seems WAY premature to me.

Ive wondered about this and Ill research it a bit, but it seems like a lot of teams count on hitters developing patience. I dont seem to recall a lot of wild swingers turning selective. I mean sure you get incrementally better.

Im fine if he's hitting 307, but the margin for error will always be razor thin if he doesnt develop some patience.

Two stats to think about

1 He's seeing more pitches per ab than ever

2 his first pitch swing % is 21% Last three years its been 31, 27, 31



I think the attempt at patience is backfiring

He's seeing more pitches because he's striking out more and not getting a hit early in the count.

Its not a huge jump but he's obviously tentative on the first pitch

Last I looked, he was also walking less even though he was seeing more pitches.

He is scaring me but hey it's early June. He could easily crank it up again and be a .280/15/70 guy again which is fine. The lack of power is weird though given he hit 14 last year with 78 RBI.

I said a few years ago that all the experience with losing teams who didn't care would ultimately have an impact on his development. Strong clubhouse leadership would have straightened him out. That cannot come from a guy his age like Rizzo. You would have hoped Soriano would have provided it for the cost of his services.

They need to get him away from Adolfo Soriano. I've heard/read a number of places he stays out real late.... not a good combo with all the day games. Send him to AAA for a month to straighten out his head and swing.

I wish Castro would have worked as hard as Soriano did at getting better on defense. I don't blame Soriano for Castro not hitting. A baseball player staying out late? That never happens.

There's a guy that just got out of jail that led a decade in hits that stayed out all night, maybe the Cubs should call him.
