ESPN draft guru Keith Law's take: Anderson is one of the few shortstop prospects in this draft who might remain a shortstop in pro ball, with a chance for several plus tools but less polish than you'd like to see in a possible first-rounder. He has a very quick but mostly flat swing, with virtually no load and just some late hip rotation, so he can slap the ball all over but isn't well set up to drive it in any direction. He drifts a little on to his front foot as well, although if he were more rotational that wouldn't be a major obstacle to hitting for at least more doubles power. He's a well above-average runner with quick feet out at shortstop but isn't certain to stay there, as his arm is a little weak for the left side of the infield, and he'll need help with footwork and quickening his transfer.

What it means: The White Sox continued their trend of not only picking position players in the first round, but position players who have speed and overall athleticism. Anderson is an above-average runner with good range and a strong arm. He can hit to all fields and the White Sox believe his that athleticism can translate into even more power, enough so that some in the organization believe he has the chance to be a No. 3 hitter one day. The obvious route is that he develops as a leadoff type.

Screams management structure similar to GarPax. Pick has Kenny written all over. GM WillHahn.

First sentence: one of the few shortstops in the draft
Last sentence: it isn't certain he will stay at shortstop

Solid!

Simeon had three kids drafted in later rounds. Very impressive.

i was reading the LA times website yesterday and i saw an ad for a bleacher report article (no doubt a slideshow) that offers up grades for every team in the draft. yeah.

seriously, think about that for a second.... this isn't the NBA draft where you're ~85% sure that you have a really good idea of what you have, nor is this the NFL draft where it's not nearly as certain but the results are usually somewhat tangible enough to give people an idea of how the team did; this is the fucking baseball draft, where the bust factor is exponentially higher than prolly all of the other drafts combined, and like, aren't there 30, 40, or 50 rounds of it? if you look at the names of all of the #1 overall picks over the years you'll notice a lot of matt bush style busts in there, and at the same time everyone knows of a few players like buehrle who had no pedigree whatsoever but when given a chance to play baseball professionally stepped up and rose to the occasion.

and bleacher report is confident enough in their brilliance to definitively tell us how well the teams drafted approximately 2-3 days after the draft? * fondly remembers his favorite card game and slams his fists on the table *

BULLSHIT!

The Brewers have agreed to a deal with competitive balance pick Tucker Neuhaus (No. 72 overall). The signing bonus will be right at the slotted amount (according to Baseball America) of $771K.

If Im reading things correctly the Cubs took two guys in rd's 2 and 3 that were ranked lower (3-5th rds) but it appears their 4th and 5th's were top 80 players?

The 2nd and 3rd rounders will sign for under slot and the savings will be used to sign later picks.

The 4th rounder Tyler Skulina is a nice pick. The 5th rounder Trey Masek was considered a 2nd round talent but he had arm/shoulder issues this spring and he's a bit undersized so that scared teams off.

Just found out that a buddy of mine from over in the bootheel had a kid he had helped coach drafted in the 4th round by the Braves. Tanner Murphy a catcher. Thought that was pretty cool.

Astros agreed to terms with first-round pick RHP Mark Appel.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the deal is expected to be worth roughly $6.5 million, which is significantly less than the assigned slot value for the No. 1 overall pick of $7.7904 million.

Appel's bonus is actually $6.35 million. That's $1,440,400 below slot and $350,000 more than the reported bonus offered by the Astros last year.

Supplemental 1st round pick Sean Manaea and the Royals have agreed on a $3.55 million bonus. It’s more than double the assigned value for his slot ($1,623,000) and slightly more than the value of the No. 6 pick ($3,516,000).

30 of the 39 first round picks have agreed to contracts. Two first round picks are still playing in the College World Series (Colin Moran and Hunter Renfoe). Here is a list of the remaining unsigned first round picks:

#2 Kris Bryant- Chicago Cubs
#6 Colin Moran*- Miami Marlins
#9 Austin Meadows- Pittsburgh Pirates
#10 Phil Bickford- Toronto Blue Jays
#13 Hunter Renfoe*- San Diego Padres
#29 Ryne Stanek- Tampa Bay Rays
#30 Aaron Judge- New York Yankees
#35 Matt Krook- Miami Marlins
#36- Aaron Blair- Arizona Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks have signed supplemental first-rounder Aaron Blair for $1,435,000. His bonus is $112,700 less than the assigned value for the 36th overall selection.

Pitcher Matt Krook has decided not to sign with the Marlins and will instead attend the University of Oregon. Miami selected Krook with the No. 35 pick.

That's a hell of a get for the Ducks who already have their entire weekend rotation returning for next season.

The Pirates have agreed to terms with No. 9 overall choice Austin Meadows for $3,029,600, matching the assigned value for his pick.

Eight of the draft’s top 11 picks now have turned pro, and only Meadows and Kohl Stewart (No. 4, Twins) have received full pick value

This Kid's going to be a MONSTER.

The Rays have signed Ryne Stanek, their second of two first-round selections, for $1,758,300. That amount matches the assigned value for his No. 29 slot.

I can't imagine Bryant actually returning to USD for his SR. year. He should be in Boise or Kane County within 2 weeks....probably Boise.

At his age he should be at Daytona by the end of the season.

Yankees, 1st-rder Aaron Judge agree on $1.8 mil. Fresno State OF, big power potential, big body, big tools.

The deal is for $122,900 over slot. Judge may have the highest ceiling in the draft but he also may have the lowest floor.

The Marlins have agreed to a deal with No. 6 overall pick Colin Moran for $3.5 million.

The bonus is exactly slot vlaue.

Only 2 first rounders remain unsigned.

#10 Phil Bickford- Toronto
#35 Matt Krook- Miami

Krook has already said he's attending Oregon and it looks like Bickford will be attending Cal St Fullerton. That's going to be a hellacious weekend rotation for Fullerton with Eshelman, Garza and Bickford. They would be an early favorite for Omaha if he doesn't sign.

Since they will be forever linked together here a comparison of Clint Frazier and Austin Meadows first professional season. They both played the entire season in extended spring training but Meadows was recently promoted to SS Rookie Ball (2 games).

Clint Frazier
Games- 44
PA's- 196
Avg- .297
OBP- .362
Slug- .506
Runs- 32
RBI- 28
Doubles-11
Triples- 5
HR's- 5
BB- 17
K's- 61
SB-3 (2 CS)

Austin Meadows
Games- 45
PA's- 199
Avg- .302
OBP- .404
Slug- .533
Runs- 32
RBI- 21
Doubles- 11
Triples- 5
HR's- 6
BB- 25
K's- 43
SB- 3 (2 CS)

Eerily similar numbers. Frazier had a higher strike out total while Meadows did a better job of making contact and getting on base. It will be interesting to see if their respective clubs skip Rookie Ball and send them to Low A next season.

We are going around in circles. Boras has shown that he will hold a player out for the top available dollar in the capped environment. He has shown in the past that college is not his league of last resort if a team thinks it has him cornered. Has he worked a deal that showed he has changed from these positions?

Bump. Please explain GD why this year will be different. Thanks in advance.
