Is it realistic to expect a player to go from the court to being a good head coach in a year?

He cannot do any worse than some of the other terrible coaches in the league.

The Bucks are already jealous.

Doesn't he have Laurence Frank as lead assistant? He will be the "motivational" guy. Basically he is in place cause maybe Deron will try hard now.

I disagree. He's likely going to make a lot of bad errors. There is a lot to coaching than playing IMO. There will be major expectations in Brooklyn too.

Any new coach is going to screw up. The hardest thing will probably adjusting from player preperation hours to coaching preperation hours.

I see the high risk but not the high reward when it comes to Kidd.

Nothing new here, but I think Billy King is gambling with his job here. There's nothing in Kidd's past to give us a picture of what his "coaching ceiling" can look like, but we certainly can see the "floor" for a rookie coach with zero experience: total failure.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't Kidd have a rocky past with some of his coaches? I don't remember him as the consummate professional, but he may have changed in his later years.

Hammond blew it again. Shaw, Karl, Hollins, and a couple others I'm forgetting are still out there. Doc Rivers may soon join them.

How bad is Shaw at interviewing?

Bird had success too without being an assistant. The hours and dedication it takes as well as the pressure that comes from coaching a playoff team will be too much for Kidd IMO.

Nas, which do you find more odd, hiring a player who just retired as your head coach or hiring a guy who's been out of the sport for ~ a decade to be your manager?

-Vinny didn't have coaching experience either.

Both of those guys had spent time in front offices and more than a month from playing before becoming a head coach.

Player that just retired. The ink isn't dry on his retirement papers. Did he retire knowing he already had this job?

Kidd has a ton of money from his playing days. I have no idea why he would want to put up with this shit unless he thinks he is going to activate himself at some point.

Vinny is a terrible coach but he is great at selling himself. That has to be the reason why he keeps getting hired.

He also might be scared of what he would do without basketball in his life.

He's probably the smartest player I've ever seen play. I will be surprised if he isn't at least a good coach.

He's easily in the top 5. Idk, I'd have to think about it.

One would hope so, but Iverson made $200+ million and is now broke.

Didn't Bird have Carlisle and Harter as his top assistants? I don't think he did much as a head coach. As I recall, he certainly wasn't the guy drawing up plays during timeouts.

Didn't Bird just kind of get thrown into coaching the Pacers because Isiah was a failure with them? Or was Isiah after Bird? I can't remember.

Isiah had success as a coach. His problem was he couldn't buy the right groceries. He believed just getting talent would make you a winner. He never realized that character and the right mix of players was more important.

Bird was "forced" into coaching but guys like Reggie and Mark Jackson said he was a really good coach. Carlisle was an unknown before Bird.

It was Bird who coached the Pacers against the Bulls in the '98 ECF, the only time any team took the Bulls to game seven in both championship three peats (80% sure about that). He won COY the same year.
