Had him and I could have flipped for Sutcliffe or someone like Rich Dotson or Bannister. I assume no one would pick any of the three hall of famer P's that weren't great with the SOx before or at end of career.

I knew there was some reason Sutcliffe started out slow with CLE, but couldn't remember. Found this:

Unbeknownst to many people is a contributing reason for Sutcliffe's bad start and the ability of Chicago to make the better trade. Sutcliffe had been tormented by an infected tooth in early May, lost 17 pounds, his equilibrium and temporarily the hearing in his right ear. Sutcliffe was also approaching contract year; there was no guarantee the Cubs would be able to sign him.

Things changed again for Sutcliffe in 1985. He was injured while running the bases in a game against Atlanta. He was 5-4 with a 2.32 ERA and the team was in contention. He tried to come back in June, but got hurt again. He was 5-14 in 1986, but recovered to win 18 in 1987 and probably should have won a second Cy Young Award. Sutcliffe was solid again the next year seasons, but got hurt in 1990 and hung around a few more years. He retired with 171 career wins.

my internal guideline was a three year minimum timeframe. I mean, of course Dick Allen's 1972 MVP year is going to be your 1B. But he really only played 2.5 years with the Sox.

If we're taking entire Chicago body of work into account, Sutcliffe, Belle, and Dick Allen probably don't belong on the ALL CITY team

I'd still take Lee Smith or Jenks as closer. At thier best they were damn near unhittable and both were very intimidating.

yeah, were going back and forth with the parameters. I originally meant a few year stretch for the Chicago team


Not sure Allen is the slam dunk you say though.

Allen in 72 1.023 OPS

Derrek Lee in 05 1.080 OPS

What are you referring to?

Allen vs. Lee?

WAR says Allen but Lee is close. He put up better offensive numbers overall and won a gold glove, too.

Allen was apparently pretty bad defensively at first that year

Its probably Allen, but I dont think its as much of a slam dunk as you say
