Is Strasburg bad this year?

For the most part his numbers look the same other than the W-L record

2012 ERA 3.16 Whip 1.155 H/9 7.7 BB/9 2.7
2013 ERA 3.10 Whip 1.176 H/9 7.8 BB/9 2.7

Strikeouts ARE down from 11.1 to 9.3 per 9

But he also has two losses in games where he gave up ZERO earned runs.

So, is this guy a losing pitcher or is do you consider him an exception like Felix?

Too early to tell. I certainly don't think he's all he's cracked up to be. The Cubs lit him up, for God's sake. Anyway, Washington is a pitcher's delight. I'm not saying that all those pitchers they have are no good, but pitching where they do makes them look a lot better than they really are.

I'm not sure why today's starters lose their velocity so quickly. Guys like Ryan and Seaver threw as hard at forty as they did when they came up. They're only in their second seasons and Strasburg and Sale are already well on their way to becoming junkballers who have to mix it up to survive rather than the dominating "blow it past you" guys they were supposed to be. I have to think it's the fact that pitchers generally do not wind up anymore. They hardly use their legs at all. It's all arm.

BEcause they pitched. No pitch counts, 3 days off, maybe 4 if there was an off day.

Strasberg is not "losing pitcher".

The other starter outpitched him in 5 of the 6 losses.

The only one where he was better than the other starter was the 14k game

Thats in the 6 losses. He has pitched well with no decision, like last night.

if he isn't perfect every starting pitcher can out pitch him given the anemic White Sox Offense.... those stats are phenomenal

He pitched okay and the no decision didn't affect his percentage. There's always another pitcher in the game. If that other guy pitches as well or better than you half of the time or more, how great can you really be?

They're not supposed to be. Maybe other guys are just pitching well against them. It's hard to tell where good pitching ends and shitty hitting begins.

Pitcher A in his 14 starts
2.75 ERA 98.1 IP 71 H 24 BB 104 K 0.96 WHIP 3.8WAR

Pitcher B in his 15 starts
3.05 ERA 103 IP 70H 24BB 122K 0.91WHIP 3.0WAR

Pretty fuckin close. From those numbers you would probably say that they are both All Stars, and maybe should even start the All Star Game. If Pitcher A had 1 more start, he would likely be ahead of B in IP, would be closer to B in K's, and maybe an even higher WAR.

Pitcher A is obviously Chris Sale 5-6
Pitcher B is Max Scherzer, 11-0

Orr, do you think Max Scherzer would be 11-0 if he were on the White Sox?

Try reading this post in a Paul Harvey voice and finish by saying, And that's....the rest of the story!"

You guys need to get behind FIP

I think what TWTW guys fail to realize, no one stat is meant to tell you the whole story.. you have to look at all of the metrics and no singular stat paints the whole picture on a guy.

Wins are almost meaningless. Joe is too stubborn to admit it.

I have no idea. But he isn't with the White Sox. All he can do is pitch the games he's in and he's doing that much better than Sale so far this season.

And I don't have anything against FIP except that it penalizes guys who don't strike out the whole world. There are guys like Mark Buehrle who can locate good enough that most of the time the ball is hit where they want it to go. That's how Buerhle was able to face the minimum twice without striking many guys out.
