Woman orders hitman to kill her husband because ‘it’s easier than divorce’ Wednesday 10 Jul 2013 12:24 pm 63Use ← → keys to
A video of a woman attempting to hire a hitman to kill her husband has been released by police. Her reason? Because murdering him would be easier than a divorce.
However, Julia Merfeld failed to realise that the hitman she met with was actually an undercover detective.
Their first meeting went through the finer details of when the murder would take place, and Merfeld even came armed with a calendar on her mobile phone to find a date that suited her.

‘Can it be a week or two from now? I was thinking either the 18th of April or the 25th.’
The undercover cop then turns talk to how Merfeld’s husband will be murdered. An insulin overdose and robbery are two methods mentioned, but she has a bigger worry – making sure the house isn’t messy afterwards.
‘I don’t want my girlfriend to be scared to move in with me if she thinks we got broken into’, she adds.
As the conversation progresses, it becomes clear she wants to know as little as possible so she can feign surprise when told of her husband’s death.
‘It would be better if you surprise me with when and how it happens. The more shocked I am, the better it’ll be. I just want to make it as non-suspicious as possible,’ she added in the taped discussion.
The two agree to meet again the next day at 4pm, where she’s told to make a down payment to show she’s committed.

The woman, from New Jersey, then explains her motivation to get her husband killed, saying: ‘When I first decided to do this, it’s not that we weren’t getting along.
‘This is easier than divorcing him. I don’t have to worry about the judgment of my family or breaking his heart. It’s a clean getaway, but it’s going to break my heart when it happens.’
She’s then warned that once she leaves the car after the meeting, there’s no turning back.
Conversation turns back to how the husband will be killed, and the undercover detective suggests using a gun or a knife. But Merfeld says she would prefer a painless murder by breaking his neck.
As the detective recommends that her husband is shot in the face so there’s no chance of survival, she nods in agreement.
Before leaving the car, Merfeld questions whether she’s doing the right thing and gets emotional, telling the supposed hitman that ‘you’re making me sad’.

It’s believed that another motivation she had for murdering her husband was to receive money from his life insurance policy.
The 21-year-old has now pleaded guilty to soliciting a murder.
When Merfeld is sentenced later this month, she faces a minimum term of six years in prison, but could be jailed for life.
Her husband had requested she received no prison time.
