The problem seems to be Bettman's or the owner's insistence that they expand around the US. It doesn't matter the big TV contract is not coming anytime soon anyway.

American TV is locked up until 2022. Canadian TV is up for bids next summer, I believe. That's where I'd want to have my teams right now.

Goalies are getting paid. What the hell is Rask going to ask for?

Two year deal is smart as well. Don't Luongo yourself with an albatross contract.

Between the LeTang and Dupuis contract yesterday, the impending Penguins cap problem next summer makes the Hawks three years ago look like a walk in the park.

The Pens are going to be absolutely screwed. All that money to like 5 guys. They are hoping as Letang's new contract does not count until after 2013-14 season that the cap will rise and they will figure something out.

Dupuis is a contract I don't understand. Giving a 4 year term to a 34 year old is awful. They have some prospects or youngsters already on the roster that probably could've filled in for Dupuis.

I don't have an issue with the Letang contract. Puck moving defensemen are paid a premium. He was going to get this figure no matter what. If they were to trade or buy out MAF's $5M contract their cap situation would greatly improve.

I think a bunch of fans and analysts are getting hung up on the cap crashing down to $64M this year while forgetting the amazing cap growth that occurred during the 6 years before the recent lockout. In '05-'06 the cap was at $39M and had grown $25M to $64.3M in '11-'12. The Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Perry contracts won't look so outrageous. Getzlaf's contract still sucks.

Seguin is the better talent with the better ceiling so that's why Morrow is involved. I guess it's a win for both teams. Erikksson meshes well with Boston's two way game and Seguin has all the potential in the world. Morrow is a good defensive prospect but he's probably a little overrated by some fans. The others involved are just bodies. I say both teams win, even trade.

The Boston Bruins have signed goalie Tuukka Rask to an eight-year, $56 million contract, the club announced today.

The contract — which should come as no shock, given it was reportedly in the works last week — features a cap hit of $7 million. Only one other goalie in the NHL has a cap hit that high: Nashville’s Pekka Rinne (also $7 million).

Tuukka Rask Stats:
Season Age GP SV% GAA
2009-10 22 45 .931 1.97
2010-11 23 29 .918 2.67
2011-12 24 23 .929 2.05
2012-13 25 35 .929 2.00

Corey Crawford Stats:
Season Age GP SV% GAA
2010-11 26 57 .917 2.30
2011-12 27 57 .903 2.72
2012-13 28 30 .926 1.94

Rask has better SV% and GAA numbers than Crawford but he's never had to play a full season as a #1. Rask is the better goaltender and has a higher upside given he's only 25. But, I always thought in exchange for term you're supposed to sacrifice dollars. Given the recent success of Luongo and DiPietro contract, I do not understand giving the long term. Hopefully Raanta is the real deal because I don't think the Hawks can fit Crawford with the insane goalie salary inflation.

Luongo immediately comes to mind. I tend to agree with the Bowman theory and don't think Crawford is here after next season. Personally I would not even give Roy or Broduer more than a 5 year deal.

So Ilya Kovalchuk retired. Giving up on 77 million owed to him, but I'm guessing he'll get close to that in the KHL in much less time. Devils lose first round pick next year.

Wow. Nothing wrong with wanting to go back home, but that's a nice FU to the Devils.

Hope he's happy back home, and doesn't come crawling back anytime soon.

That was a big penalty in first round draft choice and what they traded but 250k against the salary cap until contract expires... so what?

This is from an interview with Kovalchuk's mom ---

Is it true his salary was delayed by the Devils?

“Yes, it happened. Now, after the lockout, there are a lot of restrictions at all teams. They are also underpaid 20% [of their salary]. The League takes it as an escrow that may not be paid back if the NHL does not make profit. And then there’s government tax of 50%. That means on paper you are being paid $10 million a year, but in reality only 3. So the pendulum swung for Russia."
