Go one better: Explain to the long-suffering, the die-hards, and those who proclaim to have been born bleeding Cubbie blue that it is because of the recent bandwagon fans that ownership decided to become more focused and smarter about baseball. With the exception of the bandwagon fans demanding better the rest have been the dead weight that have kept the championship elsewhere. Of course, you have to say. it. in. a big. boy. tone.

honestly i think golf is more fun to watch on tv. at least there is action constantly, and once one guy makes a shot they cut over to the next guy making a shot.

baseball is by far the most god awful boring thing on tv. even on the shopping channel you get the chance that someone keels over from a diabetic episode.

i have a blast when i GO to a baseball game, but please keep it off my tv. reading the box score the next day on the electronic paper while watching the 2 highlights is more then enough.

Hold on now. You can watch cars go around in a circle for three hours but baseball is too dull?

Due to constant trolling, Dan's positions are so wildly hypocritical that I think his columns are a tool he uses to preemptively state his position through carefully crafted verbiage that neither defines an opinion or damns another but instead exonerates all his past thoughts through complete ambiguity and meaningless big words, much like this sentence.

No comparison. Nascar absolutely destroys baseball on TV. Pretty much of a toss up in person.

Scoreheading.

I like both, but the constant commercials in NASCAR suck ass. That would be like coming back from the break in baseball to find out somebody had just hit a three-run homer while you were watching a Toyota comercial.

yea nascar on tv is way better then real life. they try really hard to make the tv broadcast exciting, and it works. baseball is better then nascar in real life.

in baseball, theyre content with just showing closeups of blank expressions on random people, and it adds up to half the show. not to mention the 2 minute preparation before each batter actually steps in the box. at very least though, when you go to a ball game there are hundreds of hot girls to look at. when you go to a nascar race, you sit there trying to wonder HOW someone mounts those beasts

nascar will break out of commercials to show something that just happened though. you can come back to a baseball game and miss half an inning and the score has changed, and they show one replay about it. also, nascar many times just shrinks the race to the side and shows the commercial, so you see both.

Never been to a race.

have you ever noticed nascar doesnt do 'fan cam'?

if they had the fans that baseball does, nascar would probably do a fan cam during every caution.

18 minutes of action in MLB, 11 in NFL.

Do you watch NFL games?

this reminds me of the people that say soccer players are the best athletes because they play 90 minutes without a timeout. Anytime I've happened to see a soccer game on a TV screen, guys are just kind of standing around. eventually somebody kicks the ball and you have action for a few seconds, then back to standing around.

Define athleticism. Until then it's pointless to make these comparisons.

I can't fully explain the whole watching baseball thing. It's just so damn slooooooooooow, I guess is what it is.

But then, just as I say that, I think about hockey which is non stop action. And I absolutely can't stand hockey. I could seriously list 12 other sports I'd rather watch before I ever came close to listing hockey.

I think we're soul mates.

Hockey and roller derby avoided the friction thing, so they don't have to ever stop.

My analogies don't work 100% but point is its an experience. To each his own, pudwhack.

You made my point for me. It's not about whether any of us agree with being with idiot drunk fans in humid heat to wait for a parade to whiz by. I agree with why that doesn't sound fun. But - to each his own. Don't fucking tell people they are "celebrating" wrong. If Dan wants to sit on his couch and barely move a muscle to celebrate that's fine wih me. Don't write a column telling people how the fuck to enjoy their team and championship properly... And then even if you do that, offer no solutions. That, is what is wrong with that column and that is what makes him an asshole. He's judgmental because it doesn't fit his line of thinking. Some of you are missing the point. It's not about agreeing or disagreeing with his thoughts on the parade in general- it's the judgment he casts upon fans.

indeed..

but I think he's doing that on purpose.

I think he says these celebrations are idiotic and the legions of drunken young participants are.. in his words . "idiots".

Many may disagree, but I pretty much agree with his sentiments..And he's never more correct when he talks in the same vein about college sports.

I'm not sure there are "alternatives", actually. Getting that excited about sports, when you're not a participating athlete is kind of silly

if anything, I'd say if you're going to do such things, then do away with the whole "official aspects" of the "official celebration". Just do a completely R rated, vulgar drunken bachanallian thing somewhere and leave the other nonsense out of it. At least this Hawk celebration seemed to be more lively and entertaining than those official Bulls celebrations which were the biggest and most stupid snoozefest ever.

Why watch if you arent going to get excited about it? If people didnt get excited about sports, you and the rest of the producers at 670 wouldnt have jobs.

Why would that be my talking point? I'm a fan. I get excited.

There was a recent thread about a Hawaiian trip. Why go to Hawaii when you can see it on TV and avoid the annoyances of a 13 hour flight?

YES. So true. It's being "Wisconsin Cute." Nice face, pleasant personality, 25 extra pounds. Beer as a food group will do that.

oh... I'm a "little" excited..
just not enough to get shitfaced and scream Go _____ with drunken idiots.

I've learned it's better not to get excited, because the statistics definitely say you're going to be disappointed 90% of the time. Last time I was somewhat "excited" was Cubs-Marlins - I was in Venezuela at the time.. watching it on TV - had to go to the bathroom for a long dump, I come back to my room and I missed the meltdown.. and an electric atmosphere had turned into a graveyard.

once again, sorry to tell you, I agree with Bernstein - I like watching great athletes be great. I like competition, I like great plays. That interests me more than "my team", actually, though I won't deny I'd like for "my team" to do well.

I get excited.. a little... but any elation or anger/disappointment is gone within say 15 mins after the end of the game.

I'm probably more emotionally invested (to the small extent I'm emotionally invested at all) in the Bears than any other team in town, but I expect suckage from them, especially on the offensive end.

in fact, the Score sucks when the Bears play well. It's self congratulatory nonsense.
On the other hand.. when they really suck.. that's when the Score becomes fun.

you get fun callers who have an unhealthy emotional attachment to a sports team calling in getting really angry on the air... and then you get Ed and OB (they're boring if Bears win) etc etc

I was at the parade/rally, bogey, and I both agree and disagree with you. It's stupid bullshit that has nothing to do with our personal investments in the team, and if anything, it's offensive that such idiots have hijacked our happiness with an excuse to get falling-down drunk and puke on my shoe. On the other hand, there's just something about having so many happy people in one place on a nice summer day that makes it worth being there to soak it all up.

understood.

I suppose my views are influenced by the fact that I simply have no tolerance for drunken idiocy of any kind.

and sports seem to fuel an awful lot of it.

well, I'll admit.. if I lived in San Diego, then going to live outdoor sporting events might be more appealing. A breezy evening/late afternoon in the high 60's, low 70's?? NICE.

I won't deny there is something about being at an "event"... feeling the atmosphere... etc etc etc

but if you're really INTO the sport or the game.... then TV is a much better way to consume the product.

You get analysis (if you're lucky, good analysis) and REPLAYS. I like replays (I realize that many stadiums are employing that these days, but still not as good as TV) You turn your head for a moment to check out a hot chick, etc and you'll miss something.

Also - UNLESS you have very good seats.. the shitty seats are... well.... by definition -- shitty.

one time I had Bears tix in one end zone, and of course, once play had moved toward the other end zone -- I saw basically.. nothing.

oh and one more thing.

I guess this again makes me an elitist asshole, like Bernstein, who shares this opinion.

but I always prefer watching my team on a national rather than local broadcast.
I don't need stupid screaming homerism.

Joniak is unlistenable.

Sometimes, yeah. And the NFL is obviously a made-for-TV sport. That being the case, I'm not sure why anyone would be offended by me suggesting they are a fan of a television program.

I think the very nature of being a fan of something- whether it's sports or whatever- is a lack of rationality. Like, I've said, there is no litmus test for being a fan. You do what you like. But if you don't like something, I'm not sure how you can be a fan of it. It's not about how many games you attend.

I disagree with this 100%. For me, this is my favorite part about sports. Unless you were a Yankees fan or Montreal fan in their glory years the roller coaster of sports is the draw. Deal with the 90% of disappointment for the chance of 10% of happiness when the team wins a championship, has a great regular season, gutsy playoff run etc.

We'll never agree on this point. I hate this thought. The shift towards celebrating individuals over someone's team seems to be the "in" thing. I blame stupid fantasty sports and NBA. Whatever.

I agree with Kirkwood. While there is something to be said for marveling at physical achievement by one's fellow human beings, I don't think that sports would be anywhere near as popular if that were the main impetus for watching. I don't watch porn to cheer on Ron Jeremy's stamina either.
