In a shocking turn of events, the Marlins are dumping their entire payroll. I haven't heard anything about the federal investigation into the stadium deal. Anyone else? I'm going to search.

The Miami Herald
A 2½-year investigation by federal authorities has concluded that the city of Miami misled investors about the city’s financial health as it sold hundreds of millions of dollars worth of bonds dating back to 2007.
A two-page letter sent by the Securities & Exchange Commission and received by the city late Monday said the agency may seek fines or a court order against the city for violating federal laws.
The city will write a response letter arguing that the charges are not warranted, city officials said Tuesday.
Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado said he was relieved to have the probe coming to an end.
“We keep paying for the sins of the past,” Regalado said. “But we have taken many, many measures to avoid anything like this from happening in the future.”
A separate SEC investigation into government bonds issued for the Miami Marlins ballpark is still ongoing.
The SEC investigation that is wrapping up dates back to 2009, when The Miami Herald found that city financial officials had moved $26.4 million from the capital budget into the general fund. The move gave the appearance of a balanced budget immediately before a bond issue needed to finance improvements to city streets and sidewalks.
Around the same time, then-Internal Auditor Victor Igwe issued a report blasting the city for “inaccurate and misleading” budget practices. Igwe lost his job after the audit was published, and has since filed a whistleblower complaint.
SEC investigators combed through thousands of budget documents, memos and emails in the 30 months that followed, and Miami shelled out more than $1.4 million defending itself.
The SEC last probed Miami’s finances in the late ‘90s. Investigators concluded the city had defrauded bond buyers by glossing over problems with the budget, and forbade city officials from doing so again.
Similar allegations were at the center of the latest SEC investigation — and the ongoing probe into the bond issue used to finance the Marlins ballpark. Investigators want to know if investors were misled, and if the elected officials who championed the project were improperly influenced.
The stadium deal has befallen a great deal of scrutiny, partly because the city and county covered 80 percent of the project while the Marlins franchise will likely make most of the profits. At one point, it seemed Miami would have to pay $1.2 million in property taxes for the parking garages at the ballpark — an expense that would have threatened the city’s ability to meet its debt obligation.
State lawmakers exempted Miami from the tax in March.

The Marlins got $409M in public funding (on false pretense) that will cost the city $2.4 BILLION to pay off. #jail #fraud

Loria basically said he traded all of those guys because they are a bunch of losers who came in last place -- so why keep them, if the best they can do is last?

Koko B. Ware, Goldberg, and Bushwacker Luke have been sent to the Angels for prospects and cash.

Report: Marlins to host 'Legends of Wrestling Night'
By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer
July 18, 2013 11:24 am ET

Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, checking out his mostly-empty stadium.

The Miami Marlins will do just about anything to get fans to the ballpark -- that is, other than putting a winning team on the field.

The latest, according to Maury Brown, is a "Legends of Wrestling Night" on Aug. 24, when the Marlins host the Rockies.

Brown reports that Bill Goldberg will throw out the ceremonial first pitch and the following wrestling legends will be part of the event: Bret "The Hitman" Hart, Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, Jimmy "Mouth of the South" Hart, Koko B. Ware, Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake, Bushwhacker Luke and more (full list on bizofbaseball.com).

So, South Florida fans of The Hart Foundation should be excited.

The Marlins average 17,416 fans per game, ranking last in the majors in attendance despite playing in the newest stadium in Major League Baseball. It was built using hundreds of millions of dollars of public funding -- tax dollars used to purchase bonds -- though, so at least owner Jeffrey Loria isn't hurting, right?

Cuban spends money. Loria doesn't, unless it's someone else's, like the taxpayers'. Why do you think Steinbrenner was hated while Reinsdorf was allowed to consolidate power?

D-backs Press Release
7/18/2013 7:03 P.M. ET
D-backs introduce new Luchador
Team to give away 20,000 D-backs Luchador masks on July 27
PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) have introduced the D-backs Luchador as an official mascot of the team. The popularity of last year's Lucha Libre mask, which was later followed by a Lucha Libre match, inspired the creation of the Luchador character and this year the mascot features a new look. In addition, the D-backs will give away 20,000 Luchador masks, courtesy of Circle K and Univision Arizona, as fans enter Chase Field next Saturday, July 27.

The D-backs Luchador speaks both fluent Spanish and English and represents a character that you would find at a Lucha Libre match. The D-backs Luchador wrestles with Club Deportivo Coliseo and can be found revving up the crowd at select D-backs games. Fans can follow the Luchador on Twitter @DbacksLuchador and can find more information about the character at www.dbacks.com/luchador or www.losdbacks.com/luchador.

This season, the D-backs will give away 20,000 Luchador masks, courtesy of Circle K and Univision Arizona, (July 27) and 5,000 Luchador capes, courtesy of Chevrolet, for kids only (Sept. 15). Last season the team gave away their first D-backs Lucha Libre mask and featured a Lucha Libre match along the Gila River Casinos Plaza prior to the game. In addition, the D-backs will host Hispanic Heritage Day, presented by Budweiser, on Sept. 14 that will feature a Street Festival, presented by APS, and will give away 20,000 Miguel Montero bobbleheads, courtesy of Subway.

At the beginning of the season, the D-backs introduced the Sonoran Dog, a Hermosillo tradition, which features a hot dog wrapped in mesquite-smoked bacon that is grilled, and then topped with pico de gallo, ranch-style beans and a mayo drizzle. The hot dog is available at all Red Hot Grill locations at Chase Field for $7. Fans can also get the Sonoran Dog as part of a special Sonoran Dog Package, El Pa'quetellenes, for only $15 that includes an Outfield Reserve ticket, Sonoran-style hot dog, 24 ounce Pepsi and a coupon for a free cookie from SUBWAY® Restaurants. Fans also have the option to purchase the package for $19 that includes a draft beer instead of a 24 ounce Pepsi.

Tickets for the July 27 game are available at the Chase Field Box Office, by calling 602.514.8400 or online at www.dbacks.com.

The Marlins recalled OF Jake Marisnick and OF Christian Yelich from Double A.

Marsnick (22) was acquired this past off season in the blockbuster trade with Toronto and Yelich (21) was their 2010 1st round pick. The Marlins probably want to get them some major league experience so they can trade them this off season. God I hate this fucking team.
