Not too surprising for the bear with Archuleta in town and from all accounts, looking good back in the Cover 2. Harris might have been valuable on special teams but wouldn't have seen much of the field.

it's probably a 5th to 7th round pick.

JD called this one a few days ago.
He said that Harris was the most likely of the safeties in camp to get cut.

Hope he doesn't promise anyone in Carolina SB tix.

Don’t forget Kevin Payne. IMO, it was Payne that made Harris expendable.

I hope this does not become the theme of this season. But it's the NFL and many teams have their seasons spoiled by their lack of quality depth to fill in for injuries. Considering the very few injuries the Bears had last year (Brown, Tommy Harris were the only major ones), the odds are that they could be much more severe this season. With Mike Brown's history of injuries, I probably wouldn't have made this deal either. A player in hand is better than a draft pick in the bush. But then I'm not responsible for managing their long-term salary expectations under a salary cap either.

Coast,
I think they would have had to cut someone. They are pretty deep in the secondary.

Chris Harris played ok his rookie season, but got benched last season. He wasn't that good (before getting playing time back after Brown's injury), and that's why he was traded to a team that was desperate for safety help. I trust Jerry Angelo and his ability to find/draft talent, and I'm confident that both Manning and Payne will provide solid depth.

They are a pretty deep secondary:

CB's: Tillman, Vasher, R.Manning, Wesley
S's: Brown, Archuleta, D.Manning, Payne, McGowan

Wesley probably makes this team. That would give us four safeties with Archuleta, Brown, Manning, and Payne. It also creates a boatload of versatility because Archuleta is a SS, Brown is a FS/SS, Manning is a FS/CB, Payne is capable of playing FS/SS/and maybe CB, and Wesley can play Safety in a pinch. Plus, you've got a few big time special teamers in there...

Harris was a completely repetitive piece to Brown and Archuleta. He could not cover to save his life. I'm glad they got something for him. Now to hold up the Giants for Alex Brown.

A 5th round pick for someone who was most likely going to have to be released at the end of camp. Great deal.

According to Hub, Archuleta has looked slow in practices so far. I've heard Buffone, Hub and a few other Bears observers say Payne will be a starter in the future. Let's hope that future doesn't arrive this season.

Now the Bears are saying Wesley will be be traded or released, possibly as soon as today. Why would they announcee that as opposed to just stating that he will have a tough time making the team? Who would trade for someone when they could just wait for his release?

The idea is that some team might not want to risk hoping they are the first to secure him, so they'll offer up a 7th rounder or something for him.

I know it's now a moot point as a trade to N.E. has been reported.

My point is that by saying they will try to trade or release him makes no sense. Why trade for him today, thus costing a team a pick or other consideration, when said team could just wait until he is released and save the pick??

In the end, trading Chris Harris for Darwin Walker looks like a steal (since 5th rounder in and 5th rounder out)

It looks even better if the Panthers endu up picking in the low 20's and the Bears pick is #30
