Reggie Rose says Derrick Rose is 'ready to go'
By K.C. Johnson, Chicago Tribune reporter
8:45 pm, July 22, 2013

LAS VEGAS — The photos and video clips from Derrick Rose's shoe promotional tour of Europe showed the light-hearted moments.

The reality, according to Rose's older brother and manager, Reggie, involved a bit more perspiration.

"He was getting up at 6:30 every morning and working out with (Bulls assistant strength and conditioning coach) Nick Papendieck," Reggie Rose said Monday. "He has a positive attitude. He's ready to go.

"Looking at his body, he's really strong. The only thing he has to work on is cardio and getting in game shape. But that will come (in training camp). I have no concerns about him physically."

The momentum continues to build for Rose's return next season after the former NBA most valuable player missed all of last season following knee surgery. Reggie, who is in Las Vegas watching his AAU team and catching the conclusion of the NBA Summer League, said the criticism his younger brother received for missing the season didn't surprise anybody in Rose's camp.

"I knew he was going to get that backlash," Reggie Rose said. "You got Chicago Bull fans who are going to cheer the team no matter what. Then you have Derrick Rose fans who only want to come to the game when Derrick plays. You'll get the backlash, but I feel once he gets back on the court, all that stuff will stop and they'll be cheering for him."

Reggie also insisted the criticism never bothered Derrick.

"Coming from Englewood, if someone says something negative about us or our family, it's like brushing crumbs off our shoulders," Reggie Rose said. "It's nothing to us. We made it through Englewood.

"Everybody is entitled to their opinion. That's all it was."

After the May 2012 surgery, team physician Brian Cole, who performed the surgery, talked about the therapeutic benefit to playing in games whenever Rose felt ready. Cole also emphasized it could take longer than the eight- to 12-month timeline the organization placed on Rose's return for him to regain his dynamic explosiveness.

When Rose returns for preseason games in October, it will be just over 17 months since he last played in an NBA game.

"We couldn't base his whole career on one year," Reggie Rose said. "We look at the longevity of it. Derrick is going into his fifth year. I think Derrick should probably be able to play 15 to 18 years. So it was like why take a gamble on one year when we can make sure that he's all right and have him for the next 10 years? That was ultimately the decision we made as a team after he tried to get back. And we just stuck with it."

Reggie believes Derrick will regain his pre-injury form, with a twist.

"He'll come back at the level he was at before, and he's going to have a better jump shot when he comes back," Reggie Rose said. "He does a whole lot of shooting drills. He used to put up a lot of shots with (assistant) Coach (Ron) Adams. Unfortunately, Coach Adams isn't here anymore. That was kind of like his shooting buddy. And Coach Adams did a great job all last year and basically since he was in Chicago before the Bulls let him go."

Adams has moved on, landing with the Celtics. Rose is almost all the way back.

I think the Adams stuff is the most interesting. Obviously Rose is not happy about him being let go.

We

Will Derrick ever have the balls to put this guy in his place?

It must be infuriating to be in administration in the NBA and have team fortunes placed in the hands of uneducated, inexperienced toadies.

Unfortunately I don't think Derrick sees anything wrong with this.

He doesn't have a problem with a guy who, but for Derrick, would still be in Englewood spouting off about how "we got out"?

Yeah, Derrick doesn't strike me as the sharpest bulb in the drawer, as it were.

I just hope he grew 4 inches taller. otherwise there is already a derrick rose out there that plays for the heat at 1.5x the size.

I find that very very interesting. Is Adams not only gone to put a shot across Tibs bow but also to get at Reggie? This is very interesting.

I don't like how Team Rose orchestrated everything once Rose was cleared to play, but I do think they had a point about the team not doing enough to win. Given the recent reports about Ron Adams disagreeing with Gar on personnel issues, and Team Rose's friendship with Adams, I wonder if they all (including Thibs) see it the same way.

After engaging a lot of posters in debate about this team's chances, I'm less sure about my original position that they cannot win as currently constructed, but I still think there are 1-2 teams our there that, when running on all cylinders, will be too much for a team whose success is predicated on defense to beat.

i wonder if thibs ran that team as hard as he did to weed out the weak, in preparation for what to do in the offseason.

When is Derrick gonna stand up and quit letting his brother run his life. He's a grown man.

Those kind of family relationships are tough to re-align on different terms than the terms that currently exist, especially since Rose ostensibly looks up to his brothers for taking care of him. This is not to say I think it's okay for Rose to continually defer to his family, just that it may be extremely difficult for him to express disagreement on major issues.

Don't talk about little Pooh like that. He is just a sweet little boy who is naive to the ways of the big cruel world out there. He thinks he can help fix the ghetto! He needs to be looked after at all times by Reggie Rose, personal chefs, Jerry Reinsdorf, and Dan Bernstein.

by the way, how exaggerated are the statements about Reggie clearing the path for his brother in the neighborhood

Sounds like a fucked up family to me. A real "father figure" puts a kid on the path to success and then lets him go to thrive on his own. This dude keeps Derrick brain-washed.

Yea, Reggie needs to shut the fuck up, but we already knew he was the one keeping him out. I never had a problem with him missing the entire season. In fact, I wanted him to sit out the whole year, but I just wish they would have come out and said it, rather than the cloak and dagger shit we got.

Fuck Reggie Rose squarely in the ear, and to be consistent with previous commentary, until he actually does something useful again fuck that simpleton Derrick Rose as well.

Is this anything we didn't already know? Better yet, does it matter that Reggie kept him out?

People assumed all along that Rose say out because his brother wanted him to. Surprise, that's exactly what happened.

I get that. I said that. It does matter though. At some point he has to take control of his own career.

The majority of sports stars make decisions by committee. That will never change.

I think Reggie Rose is being very realistic in this situation. While I might not like his use of the pronoun "we" when referring to Derrick, Reggie isn't doing anything different from what we've seen from other athletes' managers.

Well, despite what The Oracle Berstein will blather on and on about as though it's a sure thing, I'd feel better had we had the opportunity to make sure we weren't in fact better in seven games against a not too terribly sharp looking Heat team. So, for me, yes, it matters a lot in that instance ... and overall as well. No Bulls fan should have any respect or interest in what Reggie does other than place himself under a street sweeper.

except those managers have education, have endured apprenticeship and have a wealth of experience to call upon when arriving at decisions while Reggie didn't even bother to try to get himself any backround in the business while knowing full well this was where his professional life would lead. The two may arrive at the same decision but one person got there entirely through luck.

Not trying to defend R. Rose, but prior to bungling the post-knee surgery controversy, Rose's team seemed to be doing just fine. Along with KD, Duncan, and Chris Paul, I don't think there are other NBA stars who have had in image as nicely crafted for them as Rose has. And even when we account for the recent controversy, it's still not as damaging as what LBJ, Melo, and Howard have endured in recent years. To me, Rose's recent image problems will be completely forgotten by casual and young NBA fans once he's back on the court for 40 minutes each game. His hole is not as deep as the holes Howard and LBJ, for example, have dug themselves into.

Reggie is right. Derrick shouldnt have played and risked his whole career on one season. Thats why I say Reggie has Derrick sit out every year until Reggie scouts the league and decides which year is best for lil brother to win a title. Reggie can wait til the perfect season in which Lebron blows out a knee. Reggie should also demand to have a say in who the Bulls put around Derrick. Reggie can then make an accurate decision on what year would be the perfect year for Derrick to come back and be guaranteed a title.

I know two things-

1-Kobe plays last year if he's in the same situation as Derrick. Even if the team is bad.

2-Kobe will play in games the second he's cleared.

Its a good thing Kobe doesnt have a big brother.
