The crux of this thread is the hope that intelligent folks might assist me in deciding if this Steam thing is worth my time and effort. To that end, my knowledge of what it is not entirely uninformed, but my age and general distrust gives me a strong reticence to utilize it.

Before continuing, I'm obviously aware I can read wikipedia, google, IGN, etc for information .... but like bronchitis, I ain't got no time fo' dat. Besides, there's probably a dozen or so people with the intelligence and inclination to hold my hand on this, and I'd much rather get info from you folks rather than out in the wild.

Anyway, amongst the vague questions and concerns floating about my pea-brain ....

- Does it cost anything to "sign-up" or be a member or whatever

- Do I have to always be online to play any games I might "purchase" ... for that matter, is it a 'lease' or do I have some semblance of purchase rights to the item or is it strictly at their pleasure?

- How 'secure' is it? I'm aware of at least one major problem in the past, and while I'm obviously aware nothing is "secure" per se, are there concerns any of you have, however slight they may be?

- Speaking of internet connection speed, mine is next to nil, like 300kb (it's not going to change either, so speed itself is topical non-starter) .... does that have any impact?

- Does one d/l the file (like an XBLA title) or do I "stream" it so to speak (like NetFlix)?

- What do I need to know about this anyway? That is, I'm certain there are questions that need answers that I wouldn't think of if I had 50 years to ponder.

So, thank you in advance for your time and help ... assuming you can pull yourself away from the beat-off thread long enough.

- Does it cost anything to "sign-up" or be a member or whatever - NO

- Do I have to always be online to play any games I might "purchase" ... for that matter, is it a 'lease' or do I have some semblance of purchase rights to the item or is it strictly at their pleasure? You can play off line.

- How 'secure' is it? I'm aware of at least one major problem in the past, and while I'm obviously aware nothing is "secure" per se, are there concerns any of you have, however slight they may be? It's pretty secure, I haven't seen any stories about info being hacked or anything. At least not in the past few years.

- Speaking of internet connection speed, mine is next to nil, like 300kb (it's not going to change either, so speed itself is topical non-starter) .... does that have any impact? Only for downloading the actual titles/patches etc.

- Does one d/l the file (like an XBLA title) or do I "stream" it so to speak (like NetFlix)? You download the local content to your hard drive, I'm actually not too sure if there is stuff on Steams end.

- What do I need to know about this anyway? That is, I'm certain there are questions that need answers that I wouldn't think of if I had 50 years to ponder. Download the Steam client, sign up, peruse the titles and such. Buy some. Play them. You can delete them and redownload them at anytime.

So, thank you in advance for your time and help ... assuming you can pull yourself away from the beat-off thread long enough.

There is really no risk to to it, just sign up and buy when you want. Unfortunately you just missed the Summer Sale, but there are specials and sales running every week and huge sales every now and again.

I would also recommend checking out Good Old Games (GOG.com) as well if you're interested in old school stuff.

It's just my luck some peckerhead on the ignore list is the first to respond.

First of all, a sincere thank you for said post.

Second, I'm at work and naturally that GOG site would surely be prohibited .... but I took a quick read on wikipedia, and got-damn boy, that seems like the ideal site for me. I'm old and crochety and don't like DRM for any reason, even if I never have to "deal" with it directly .... I'm old school in that when I buy something it's mine 100% period.

So, again, thanks.

That said, if anyone finds themselves inclined to offer their 2-cents to this old coot, I'll certainly read it.

GOG is the tops, Don, the tops. They have some modern and brand new games as well, all without DRM. Everything is pretty affordable. You can also download and delete and re-download at anytime, even if it's too another machine, same with Steam. If all else fails I go hunting for Abandonware and but up my DosBox w/ Defend Reloaded front end.

Follow-up tangential question/note to my initial post.

A lot of this stems from the fact that once I got this "new" computer (new to me, and while it's score is 5.9 it's a fucking new universe of usefulness compared to the pos I was stuck with), and was gleeful at the idea that I could again play some nice old games such as HOMM V, the original Tropico, maybe even load up Deus Ex (because that's just what one does when they see a copy of it).

Well, I couldn't get any of them to 'work' (catch-all word for any number of issues) on Windows 7.

Anybody know if that's a problem w/ GOG? Steam?

(notes: (a) I know full well about 'run as administrator'; (b) I did enough research on HOMM to find out that aside from one possible solution - which is to boot up in safe mode and then install and something else - it's just never ever going to work on Win7)

Fuck it, since we're here ... anybody know how to get PinMAME or VisualPin to work on Win7? I cannot tell you how fucking pissed and perplexed I am at something that used to work so well with WinXP2 doesn't fucking work for shit on Win7 and a computer an order of magnitude faster/better/harder/longer/deeper than said WinXP2 machine. I'm cold and there are wolves after me.

If I could I wouldn't be looking to play old games on a half-assed computer and talking to you peasants.

Unless it states that it won't work with Windows 7, it will work with Windows 7.

GoG games, if they need it, come with their own prepackaged and configured DosBox and Steam games are compatible with all unless it is stated otherwise.

Did Deus Ex just not work at all or did the graphics come out looking messed up? Because on new machines you need to download a patch/mod for it that cleans it right up and actually improves the look. Although it isn't a problem on GOG or Steam. Oh, games from Steam/GOG are still able to be modded and such, which is cool.

Well I never got around to Deus Ex because after getting fucked over by the the other things (especially HOMM) I was madder than a raped ape and gave it the ol' Mean Gene "fuck it". Anyway, again that GOG thing looks like it just might be something this idiot will have to get around to actually checking out.

Well, I guess this is where we part ways.

Best of luck on your travels, Don.

And a nice adieu to you as well .... may you find enough pocket change to get your merking dry cleaned this weekend.

Steam's cool because the seasonal and weekend sales are awesome. So used to not having much choice but to pay full price for console games, having relatively new title for at least 1/2 off is sweet. On GOG I've played Ultima VII, Arcanum, Baldur's Gate(s), and Caesar III, love it.

steam is really a great service.... they have sales often and you can get great PC games for $5 or less... there are also many games to choose from, if your PC can play games still, it is a great service

Thank you all again for your continued (perverted?) interest in helping out this idiot.

FWIW, in regards to my computer, as I said it's (apparently) nothing spectacular by today's standards, but compared to what I had, it's absolutely night and day.

Pentium Dual-Core E5400 @ 2.70Hz (x2), 64 bit, 6GB RAM
GeForce 9800GT

So why did MS decide "fuck older games" anyway? I'm guessing it wasn't quite that direct, but it clearly wasn't something that kept them up at night.

MS can't win. Nobody calls apple out for not supporting old crap on their new products, but when MS doesn't make 100% of everything they have ever made compatible with their newest stuff, people freak out.

Granted, part of the charm and reason windows is so successful is because of the long life-span of any given product, but at the same time it takes A LOT of work to make everything backward compatible.

Unless you do it like nintendo did with the Wii, which is to literally include a gamecube inside it. still, its pretty ridiculous what people expect.
