Steak and Shake is fine. You can do much worse.

Gotta love all the NW suburbs talk. Truly suburbia qua suburbia, as far as the component regions of Chicagoland go.

I've always imagined the south suburbs as being like Shelbyville in that episode where they steal the lemon tree, where everything is fundamentally the same but just different enough to remind you you're not home, like main roads called "183rd Street," Sox stuff instead of Cubs stuff, or Aurelio's instead of Lou Malnati's.

Speaking of NW & W suburbs, has anybody tried Tom & Eddie's? I've been to Deerfield & Vernon Hills each once. I guess there are ones in Geneva and Napervillle too.

In the mold of Smashburger but I liked T&E better.

Also there's a BBQ place that opened in Arlington Hts on Rand and Arlington Hts-ish called JD's Q & Brew that's pretty decent take out suburban BBQ. Nothing to knocks your socks off but a good choice if you're craving quick good BBQ in the land of soccer moms.

Edit: I should add if you politely ask JD's Q & Brew for extra sauce they'll happily give it to you. Novel concept.

It's like Steak n Shake. It's not so much high-end fast food as it's fast food that happens to cost more than most fast food.

You are off base here, Hair. Steak n Shake is NOT fast food. It's all fresh meat, cooked on a grill. There are no steak n shakes where I live now, and it is horrible. You take it back, goddamnit!

Steak & Shakes service is the worst. Just awful. Table service is slow as hell. When the food finally arrives, you wonder why you waited.

I have never had this problem.

Yeah, it used to be a burger/beef/hot dog/gyros place called Teddy's, but then I think people realized why not just go to Portillo's?

IN TINY LITTLE JD'S Q & BREW BOTTLES!

Hmmm, last thing I remember it being was Long John's Silver. Or is the Wendy's there what used to be a LJS?

And after year's of being empty the old Max & Erma's has a breakfast/lunch place Honeyberry Cafe. Pretty much a copycat of Wildberry which is not a bad thing. Solid addition to the area.

The outlot where the Long John Silver's was is still empty, I think. This building is new-ish. Guess you could say it's a long-gone Long John Silver's.

You know, I used to live a mile from there and we never went there once.

Nice, I grew up in the Ivy Hill neighborhood (boxed in between Palatine, Hintz, Windsor and Arlington Hts). As a toddler before starting preschool and during summers I'd get babysat by my grandparents who were maybe a block away from Dryden Elementary. So I'm a dreaded NW suburbanite through and through as well.

Ah, just across the "train tracks" of Palatine. So one of my favorite little things are the two cursed shopping centers that buttress your neighborhood. You have Pal-Win which seems like a terrible idea when Palatine is an expressway. And then you have the shopping area across Hersey. The earliest memory I have of the largest tenant was a Dominicks. I vaguely remember it being something else before a Dominicks. Then I guess it has been a few different banquet halls. My brother had his birthday party at the indoor amusement park that was next door before shutting down a few years ago. Now I think someone has reopened it.

When I lived there, that was an Omni, which was like some giant Dominick's warehouse sort of thing. I remember my parents signing a petition to close a gun store in that strip mall across from Hersey, the idea being that gun stores probably shouldn't be across the street from high schools on general principle. I think it's a Dairy Queen now.

Yes!!! Omni. Couldn't pinpoint it. I kept thinking Venture but knew that wasn't it was that was in the LaserZone shopping center.

We had a Hardees here in Sycamore. Then somebody stabbed somebody else in the back of the house.

We don't have Hardees anymore.

I used to hit up the Hardee's in Dubuque IA on my way out of town after visiting relatives. Enjoyed the Sourdough/Frisco Burger, but it was usually hit-and-miss. The best part of the trip back was watching all the drunken assholes pull into the gas station outside of Galena trying to sober up/get rid of the alcohol scent/signs because of the DUI checkpoint on the other side.

I have no problem with Steak/Shake when it comes to burgers. They don't disappoint, Hell, even Wendy's premium burgers are decent.

I haven't eaten McDonald's for almost a year. I was extremely hungover after Lakemoorfest '12 and, despite my Irish lineage, can't stomach much alcohol anymore. I stopped in a McD's thinking the grease might settle my stomach. Big mistake. Within 10 minutes I felt extremely nauseous and in the course of about 7-8 seconds I went from feeling nauseous to projectile vomiting while riding my motorcycle at about 15 mph as I attempted to pull my bike over. Getting the bike down to speed while I was unstrapping my helmet/lifting my visor was some amazing bike control on my part, if I do say so myself.

Jeezus...I lived across the street from Frontier Park where the soccer and softball fields are. Small world...went to Thomas, but being North of Palatine Rd, I went to BG instead of Hersey. Small world.

My aunt lives over in that area...She was on Brighton down by Palatine Rd, and now lives off of Windsor.

Arlington Heights is weird in that like none of the city actually seems to go to its high school. Some parts go to Prospect, or BG, or Meadows. I'm sure some must go to Elk Grove. I think there's a corner that gets sent to Palatine, because I met a girl at college who lived in Arlington Heights but went to Palatine. I moved away, so I didn't even go to Hersey.

I used to eat lunch at Hardee's everyday in the 1980s when I was selling auto parts. They had a turkey club that was pretty tasty.

I was always a big Hardee's fan.

I find the whole High School naming system confusing in Illinois. For the most part in Indiana if you live in say Crown Point, you go to Crown Point High School. Pretty simple. I understand needing a lot of different names if you have a really large city but it seems very random the way they do it.

They had the best fries, the curly fries that were spicy and orange and just greasy as all fuck. I generally cannot eat fries, but if I could have those again, I sure would eat those.

You are correct about the Arlington/Palatine thing...it's up North around Lake-Cook and 53...

I originally grew up in Wheeling by the old K-Mart on Dundee and 83. Wheeling High School was only 1.5 miles away but that neighborhood went to Buffalo Grove HS 2.5 miles away. I would love to know how they mapped out the boundaries. I'm sure there was some fishy racial thing to it.

The key word is "had" because my hardees experiences over the last few years (dating back to ~sept10) haven't been as good as as i remembered them being years ago. There was a time when i got a proper sourdough meal with milkshake from a kid in a dead kennedys shirt whose body odor could be sampled in the car. Those days are gone, as it seems that the once boastworthy "employee proof" means of preparing their food have gone by the wayside. c'est la vie.

that said, i'll be holding out hope that elk grove/bensenville's best and brightest can cook some damn curly fries. They were quite proper the first time around, all the way down to the excellent cinnamon rolls @ the breakfast buffet. i wouldn't go within 3 hours of that nowadays.

agreed. If Hardees isn't the absolute worst fast food burger place out there its definitely a finalist.
