Sandberg's not ready to be a major league manager. The Phillies should hire Mike Quade.

I actually met Jim Sundberg about 25 years ago. I had a buddy that camped at this place by Galesburg. So we go camping, get our shit set up, and commence to getting drunk and stoned. A few hours later this dude and his hot wife pull up by our site, and ask if we care if they set up shop nearby. We say cool, don't think much of it. Later in the evening we invite our inebriated selves over to their site. We start making small talk, and I ask him what he does. He says he's a retired ball player. I ask, MLB. He says yes. That is my Jim Sundberg brush with fame. He was really cool as we were 19-20 year old loud drunks. I think he got a kick out of us. Did I mention his wife was smoking hot!!!

I think Sandberg would have benched Castro more (assuming he didn't respond to his attempts to coach him up) and not been a fucking statue like Svuem is most of the time. Damn shame he didn't get the Cubs job.

Let's not get meatball-crazy. Managers have very little variance in MLB, and I doubt Sandberg brings a ton of WAR to the table. He is a weird dude.

I disagree. Look at Madden every year in TB and what LaRussa did all those years. Francona also has done good work with Cleveland although they are folding again lately.

I think Sandberg was (and is) an excellent teacher and he commands respect. Plus he respects the hell out of the game and demands that from his players.

He's an old school hard ass that also is big on teaching and emphasizing the fundamentals.

Weird,how so? What I found "weird" is he was a very silent ballplayer and now he is a leader of men?

I would not hire such a reserved guy to manage a baseball clubhouse. That's just me. And I'm pretty sure most managers preach fundamentals. Ryne Sandberg didn't invent that.

I always wanted Larry Bowa to manage the Cubs. I prefer my managers to have a flame under their ass. I can't say much about Sveum until he has a real team to manage.

I don't follow much PHIL baseball but I've seen some blurbs where Rollins has been loafing. It'll be interesting to see how Sandberg's MO goes over with the vets.

Obviously PHI management has the same questions but are taking the gamble at least for the rest of the year.

I would not bet against Sandberg.

I also like my managers to not be zombies (like Svuem) and also liked Bowa although he was prob to intense for his own good. Ryno to me balances the Bowa fire with the LaRussa restraint.

Svuem to me adds nothing and is a very poor strategist.

I believe you may be right. I'm sorry if I was hard on you in the other thread. I'm also tired of losing, but also tired of spending money on has been stars, just to make it look like your "trying" to win the World Series.

I agree with you that the losing needs to stop next year and not 2-3 years down the road.

Actually,I think Sveum has hitting charts that backs up his strategy. He is never without an answer on moves he makes in a game. I don't mind him YET.

I don't think he lasts in Philly. This will toughen him up. Players are always tight with the bench coaches/base coaches because they don't have to be hard asses. Now that he is the manager they will lose their shit when he gets on them. He will be the Cubs manager in 2016.

It will be interesting to see what the Cubs do with Svuem down the road but I don't see them hiring Sandberg for some reason. It just seems Ricketts doesn't like the guy.

I wish the Sox would have hired him as a big FU to the Cubs.
