Here's a couple more I jotted down from the Tuesday game:

The best talent evaluator I ever saw - Whitey Herzog

The position player who signed the most autographs for fans I ever saw - Cal Ripken Jr. Unfortunately, Hawk did not grace us with who the corresponding sign friendly pitcher would be.

Everyone knows it's Bob Feller. There's a joke in memorabilia circles: I actually bought a ball today that didn't have Bob Feller's autograph on it.

Best first-ball fastball hitter we've ever seen is Vlad Guerrero.

Best knuckleballer ever (later amended to best in the past 50 years): Hoyt Wilhelm.

Hawk then recalled that he only hit one ball off of him, and the story actually checks out. He also said he hit knuckleballers pretty well except for Hoyt, and that appears to be true also... 10 for 23 against Bouton and 11 for 31 against Wilbur Wood.

Best pitcher to hit off all time for Hawk? 8 for 10 against Sammy Ellis with 2 HRs.

I might be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure Wilhelm was the second hardest guy to hit after Ryan.

Here's your career top 10 for hits allowed per 9 IP (minimum 1000 IP, Clayton has just enough to make it):

1) Nolan Ryan - 6.55
2) Sandy Koufax - 6.79
3) Sid Fernandez - 6.85
4) J.R. Richard - 6.88
5) Clayton Kershaw - 6.91
6) Andy Messersmith - 6.93
7) Mariano Rivera 6.97
8) Trevor Hoffman - 6.99
9) Hoyt Wilhelm - 7.01
10) Sam McDowell - 7.03

"Sudden" Sam McDowell threw the heaviest ball I have ever seen. I mean it was like trying to hit a bowling ball.

Back in the day when my friends and I would play Strat O Matic , we replayed the 1969 season ( won by me with the Tigers ) and I drafted McDowell . He was unfuckinghittable.

I would have never expected Sid to be #3.

That is what I was getting ready to say. Very surprised to see him on that list.

He was probably my favorite non-Cub player from that time period. I spent hours in my back yard trying to mimic his throwing style.

Sid is probably like 425 lbs now. Dude could hardly get through five innings.

Herky jerky motion, threw hard, effectively wild. Always remember being him up amongst the ERA and strikeout leaders.

Hawk loves Sudden Sam McDowell almost as much as he loves Yaz.

He looks like a villain from the old Batman TV show.

This isn't exactly on topic, but Hawk just said that former Red Sox reliever Dick Radatz was 6'8" 350 lbs. According to baseball reference, he was 6'6" 230 lbs.
