Good to hear the voice again. He really doesn't say that much, isn't that exciting, but...having met him several times, he is as nice a guy to a perfect stranger like me as he seems on the radio; that, coupled with his knowledge of what it's like to play in the NFL...it was like, welcome home, son.

Big fan of Buffone breaking down the Bears. Good show for the time I heard last night.

Speaking poorly of Doug Buffone when he is talking football could be actionable in a court of law!

The one thing that makes O.B. and Doug so enjoyable a listen after a Bears game is the fact that they bring the fire and the passion. Wait, I guess that would be two things...

And he's genuine. He isn't polished, but he knows football. And it doesn't matter to him if you were a Bears fan when he was playing, or that you're a 7 year old kid; if you want to talk Bears with him when he's on a remote or an appearance? He's been a class act every time I've seen him.

Doug also continually breaks his own world record of using the term "the fact is" per minute on every radio broadcast he does.

I love Doug. I'll never forget trading banter during the wise guys live from Vegas tourney shows. He is a funny guy whose humor sometimes doesn't always come through on the air.

And for gamblers, following his three rules of football are a major key to having a winning season. If there is a matchup in which one team does these three things better than its opponent, don't bet against them. For those who don't remember his rules:

1. Run the Football.
2. Stop the run (or as Doug says: Stop the man with the skin of the pig).
3. Rush the Quarterback.

As much as I love Doug, he's only about two-thirds right. Typically, teams don't win because they run the ball, they run the ball because they are winning. I know there are exceptions, but things like "establishing the run" are half-myths.

Teams that can run consistently usually are winning teams. Do they win because they run or do they run because they are winning? I think there are teams that fit both models. Sure most teams in the NFL gain the majority of their yards passing, but teams that can run usually control the ball and TOP. To Doug's point, show me a team that can run the ball and do the other two things I'll show you a winning team. I will acknowledge that the rushing axiom is true more so in college than in today's NFL.

Doug is wrong. Yes, running the ball and gaining yards is good. That kind of goes without saying. But if it was as simple as just running it, and Doug always talks about attempts, then why not just run 3 and out. Get it back run 6 and out. Get it back and run 9 times for 3 first downs - run 3 more and not get a first down and punt. Well shit you have 21 rushing attempts to no passing attempts and you've yet to score.

I know my example is extreme. No team would run 21 times before they pass. My point is the object is to gain yards. You take what they give you.

And yes, most teams with the most rushing attempts usually win. But that's because they have the lead and milk it in the 4th. The other team is forced to throw because they are behind.

How does that saying go ?

Throw the ball to score points, run the ball to win ?
