People who don't know a lot about a sports teams can still be fans. They just happen to have a more fulfilling life and don't need to self-identify as having great knowledge of such meaningless topics as who is the Bears second string linebacker or whatever minor league baseball player is going to be on the team in 3 years.

We shouldn't judge them. They should be judging us.

Even worse are people who take to a sports message board to psychoanalyze sports personalities without the benefit of ever speaking to them. There are some that are more interested in the persona of the commentator than they are about talking sports. Now that is truly pathetic. At least the self professed die hards are truly concerned about whatever team that they are interested in rather than attempting to make the truly uninteresting appear to be interesting.

Not the Goff crap again. Once again the mundane becomes fodder. I have never met the guy frequently disagreed with much that he has said over the years. His thoughts on the NBA i frequently found to be ridiculous. Its simply easier to shoot the messenger rather than address the message. The epitome of ad hominem. I will not criticize die hard sports fans for being die hard. That is one of the reasons that people post on this site. What is ridiculous to me is the amount of time that is spent wondering about the hosts of particular shows. Contract talks, personal lives, and speculation on things that most know nothing about. For instance how many times can the thread about Speigal getting fired get ran without him getting fired. Its cool to criticize the hosts about their work that is what this site is for, but the constant speculation about backstage stuff is boring quite frankly. I know that qualifies as ptfb but it may be part of the reason that there is not as much traffic on here as there used to be. Just a thought

Hey Goff, I know the title of the board is Chicago Sports Fan Message Board but it was created principally to discuss Chicago sports radio, not the sports. The actual sports talk has been secondary since its inception

I'm sure that it wasn't created for the purpose of being bombarded by wannabe Melvin Purvis G-Men. There are some that post on this site for the purpose of discussing the backstage goings on a station which doesn't garner huge ratings by the way. Are people really interested in that stuff? Personally I began posting because i thought it was a good place to discuss things that the personalities were stating on the air. I found that I frequently disagreed with the hosts of the shows and this was a good place to vent.

It still is a good place to vent, Jason.

Were you a member around the time North started to make his power move in destroying Monsters and HFC? Now those were the real days of wild speculation about the personal lives of the hosts.

This is all pretty much light hearted stuff today. There is usually one whipping boy at the station that gets caught up in the groupthink of the site. It seems like Meatpants is that guy currently. It has previously been Lawrence, Bernstien, Mac, North, Salisbury and whoever that guy is who went by the nickname Huge. The threads about these guys are pretty easy to spot and avoid with plenty of other fun and sometimes good conversation in other sections.

No I wasn't. I began posting about four or five years ago. Its idiotic to refer to me as Goff when he posts under his own name. I know some use multiple names around here. The only problem that I have is that it way too leveraged towards Speigel firing. When Goff was there it was about whom he was going to replace. The really stupid thing about it was that none of it was ever true. Much of the speculation that takes place on this board turns out to be completely false. Some of the same people that criticize Terry for his "guys" and his "peeps" do exactly the same thing that he does on a daily basis. They start threads that are repetitive about backstage stuff that they know absolutely nothing about. I don't know which one is more troublesome the people who start such threads or the ones that respond to them. Probably more troublesome are the people like me who read such threads.

Unlike Terry no one here claims their belief is based in anything other than the monsters in their head, Riles. I think that is generally unstated but understood except in the case of Beardown where some take it seriously and abuse him for his work.

Before you get too worked up on the Goff thing, Big Partner, I think people are just having a little fun at your expense and your reaction fuels further response.

in this day and age, if folks are shocked by people on internet forums speculating about semi-public figures, they should probably leave the internet.

The preoccupation with it is bothersome. I am not bothered by the Goff stuff i am merely stating that I am not him. There is an element of truth to the whole speculative thing though. There are people that are far more interested in the inner workings of a second rate sports station than they are about talking sports. The new thing appears to be McNeil and his "proposed" by message posters anyway, move to the afternoons. When is this supposed to happen? Is it going to be next week? next year? never? I shouldn't tell people how to think or what to write but I felt the need to express my opinion on some of the things that are a bit troubling.

The Goff thing is one guy's standard response to anything I post. Don't post often but it goes back a few years. It started with the Carmelo Anthony stuff from a few years ago. I guess the only insult I take from it is that how I would ever be confused with the stuttering, stammering Jason Goff is beyond me.

I like Goff. It's a compliment Jason.

Fan... Another term that I think is quite overused.

 Not unless you shave, Hank.

Seriously, I missed this. It sounds like IMU and I are lonely voices of reason on this topic. It can't just be that claiming to be a "fan" makes one a "fan". There must be an actual definition of the word. Don't tell me you're a NASCAR fan and when I ask you if both Busch brothers are going to make The Chase, tell me you have no idea about the standings. If that's your answer, you're less of a fan than I am and I'm not a fan at all.
