Well then state what the actual definition is.

Don't tell me you're a NASCAR fan and when I ask you if both Busch brothers are going to make The Chase, tell me you have no idea about the standings. If that's your answer, you're less of a fan than I am and I'm not a fan at all.
Isn't the point of this thread that many fans are clueless idiots who just want to yell "Go Bears"?

It's a slippery slope when we start to link knowledge to what makes a fan. All of a sudden we aren't fans of just about everything because in general, we are ignorant on most topics. I mean, I'm a big fan of Sons of Anarchy, but I don't have enough time to gain huge knowledge of the show. I just watch it and enjoy it.

One who has a passionate, or at least more than passing, interest in a particular subject.

As far as linking knowledge to being a fan, it's the same as linking attendance at games to being a fan. One isn't a fan because he attends games. One attends games because he is a fan. Knowledge of a subject does not make one a fan of it. One has knowledge of a subject because he's a fan of it.

I believe my original foray into this discussion came when you or someone else cited some poll as evidence that "football is king". RPB correctly pointed out that there are many people who would select football on such a poll simply by virtue of the way most people consume the sport. When the polltaker calls you and your four friends in various jerseys jumping about your couch and your granny cooking chili in the kitchen, you all say you're football fans. But when you tell granny that next week, instead of watching football, you and the boys have decided to watch the Bar Rescue marathon, she will undoubtedly say something like, "That's great!. I'll make an extra pot of chili." And as much as you'd like to count her as a football "fan", I maintain she does not meet the qualifications for said designation.

This seems far different than the case you were making before, which seemed to indicate it was hard to be considered a true fan if you don't attend games. By that definition, it may actually make you a bigger fan to not attend games as long as you use the time you save with the annoyances of attending games to show further interest in the subject.

Not really. We can choose what information to process. If someone finds it useless to know who the backup TE for the Bears is they will simply decide not to learn it. Game attendance is actually a terrible way to learn and study the game. We all learn more from Hawk than we do from the drunk guy next to us yelling at Adam Dunn to stop taking pitches and swing.

I don't know what that hypothetical anecdote proves. Yes, there are people who don't really have interest in football besides a social setting to go with the group. So does baseball, and hockey, and basketball, and the Emmy's, and concerts, and pretty much everything. You don't honestly believe that the massive measurable difference in popularity from the NFL to everyone else is because of grandmothers who are watching football with the grandkids and their friends do you?

Who do you got in your Emmy fantasy league? I think I have to go with Bryan Cranston as my #1 pick this year.

Only when it was Brandon Manamaneusless

Yup. That's because it is fairly useless information.

No, I think you have strange ideas about what information is "useless", so I broke it down to what every human really requires. I suppose you consider any knowledge that helps you acquire Veblen goods to be useful, as well as how to operate your television remote(s).

What is required and what is useful are too completely different sets of criteria. No need to make it more complicated than it is.

It's a simple question. Is it useless to know who the backup TE of the Bears is? If it is useful, what is someone who doesn't know this missing out on?

It may be useful or not, but you aren't a FAN if you don't know the entire 53 man roster AND the practice squad!

I do not believe it is too early to start making plans for a trip to NY in February.
