So let's say he has a great year on punts and kickoffs and the Bears want to franchise tag him. How is that tag salary determined? The tag is the average salary of the top 5 paid at a specific position. There are no guys in the NFL that are just listed as punt and/or kickoff. They all have other positions.

He gets paid like a punter.

This might have been a good angle 4-5 years ago. As for now, I don't think he's worth the trouble over money. He's an aging, one-dimensional player who has already fulfilled his potential.

I'm just saying if he has a great season. If he sucks it doesn't matter, obviously. A lot of you might doubt him. I think he can be great if he's just doing kicks and punts.

This angle wouldn't have applied 4 or 5 years ago since he was listed as a WR. You'd have to pay him top 5 average of WRs.

I think the Bears wouldn't mind letting him walk even if he does have a great year. Having to acclimate yourself to different positions over the years isn't an excuse for sucking at all of them for entire seasons.

At times he looked ok last year. Before cutting such a threat,they better make sure he is done. I would let him return punts in the first few regular season games to see how he looks.

This question is going to be relevant.

You know, we have 15-20 Bears reporters in this city, you'd think one of them would get information on how this would work and share it with us. You'd think it might cross some reporters mind knowing Hester is in his last year. Instead they all just give us the same stories daily. Most of which we already know.

The guy has more importance now to game planning. I can't see why anyone would want to kick to him. I don't care about TD's if he is averaging 49.5 per return. On the first KO to him after the Vikes 105 yard return,he really looked pissed.

Well he's at the wrong age to command big $ from the Bears or any other team. At 31 or 32 or whatever he'll be in the off-season, I doubt we'll see some big bidding war for his services.

What would his franchise tag be? That's what I want to know. He doesn't have a position. There is no average salary for KR/PR in the NFL. 1. I think he's the only one. 2. I don't think somebody that just does returns has ever been tagged in the NFL.

I'm saying franchise him for another year and make the NFL determine the price some how. I don't think it would be much. 2 or 3 million should be the going rate for somebody without a position.

He's of value unlike dumb ass Urlacher. I'm saying this is the loop hole to get him on the cheap, for just one year, where he doesn't have a choice to refuse.

i say franchise him at 5 mil next year. he doesnt play every down, but he immediately effects every drive after an opponent score even if he doesnt touch the ball- and hes the best ever in history at what he does.

Some years teams don't tag anybody on their roster. So if they don't need to use it, it's an option for Hester.

You can't think about that stuff, Curious. It is depressing. I was playing hoops the other day with some 19-year-olds who had never seen Michael Jordan play. They sure as hell had never seen him play as a Bull. It was startling when I really thought about it.
