Laurence Holmes
My new partner for the Miller Lite Top Draft shows this year will be Bears TE Martellus Bennett. Very excited to have him on board. Venues TBD.

Have to say, solid get for 670. Martellus was pretty funny on the Cutty show last week. That said, REALLY pissed he's going on with Laurence. I hope Larry doesn't ruin this.

Martellus Bennett signs radio deal with The Score

Martellus Bennett

The Black Unicorn is coming to Chicagoland radio.

Loquacious Bears tight end Martellus Bennett has signed a deal to appear regularly on WSCR-AM 670, the station announced Friday morning. He will serve as creative director of his segments.

"We’re interested in him because he’s such a character on and off the field,” said Mitch Rosen, the station’s program director. “He’s going to be beyond football. Of course, we’re going to talk football every week, but his personality transcends into what we’ve never heard in this market before wielded from a current professional athlete."

Bennett was not immediately available for comment. The Bears on Friday are continuing to prepare for Sunday night's road game against the Steelers.

Bennett will appear on the "Boers and Bernstein Show" Mondays at 5 p.m. On weeks the Bears play on a Monday or Thursday, Bennett will instead join the afternoon duo the day after the game.

He also will join the Miller Lite Top Draft Show with host Laurence Holmes at various locations across the Chicago area starting Tuesday, Oct. 1.

His creative input is a bit unsual, Rosen said, but the station was glad to provide it, given the lively personality Bennett has exuded since joining the Bears on a four-year contract in March.

"A lot of times we’ll have athletes on and it’s just Xs and Os, let’s talk about the game," Rosen said. "Again, we’re going to be talking about the games, but he might want to talk more about pop culture some weeks or talk about other sports. We’re wide open to that. What he’s going to bring to the table is his personality, charisma and his demeanor."

Bennett's appearances on Mondays at 5 p.m. coincide with quarterback Jay Cutler's show on WMVP-AM 1000.

"When we did the deal, Martellus and I and his representatives, we didn't think much about that," Rosen said. "But it's great timing for us in that the longest running afternoon show in Chicago, Boers and Bernstein--they've been on the air close to 15 years together--it's a great time to talk football."

Bennett through two games leads the Bears with three touchdown catches, including the game-winner with 10 seconds remaining in last Sunday's 31-30 win over the Vikings.

He has matched his play with entertaining soundbytes, most notably calling coach Marc Trestman "Willy Wonka," prompting teammates to characterize him as an amalgamation of Muhammad Ali, Jesus and Shaquille O'Neal. He previously coined himself The Black Unicorn, a nickname he said celebrates his speed, race and how amazing he is.

This will be tremendous. LoHo Tangents are the only worthwhile content on The Score these days.

Bennett strikes me as a Tangent Machine.

He's got connections with ghosts don't know if he likes comic books.

I hate this part of Laurence's show. He's going to try to be cool and impress Bennett. Then talk on other shows about it and them being best buds. Aside from being annoying and pitiful it's so off the charts unprofessional.

I'm biased . But yeah I like it. I think silvy is good at getting info from him and I think cutler comes off better on the show.

Excellent analysis! I guess that's Leary in a nutshell.

It was pointed out on deadspin that Cutty's coach Tresty looks just like Slugworth.

Think Lance and Peanut are Jealous?

My guess is the Black Unicorn quits in week 9

Did anyone listen to this last night? It was on for 1.5 hours. I listened to about half or more while I was doing stuff aroud the house and it was essentially a repeat of what I heard when he was on the outstanding Jay Cutler Show and the few minutes I heard when he was on with B&B last week.

*Umpteen references to his nicknames for himself

*Racial stuff that is quickly growing tiresome: "Well, my name is Martellus but I sometimes go by Martin. That's my white people's name." (I think this is the third time I've heard this)

*The occasional attempts at social commentary that either trail off into incomplete thoughts or just altogether that fall flat.

*Random thoughts that seem funny and silly the first time you hear him interviewed but get repetitive when you hear them every show.

At one point he complained about people always asking him if he's a professional athlete. No one ever asks him if he's an accountant. You're in your mid-20s, 6' 6" and 265lbs., and are built like this:

Image

You'll live.

Laurence was fine during the parts that I heard, but I kind of got the impression that he was struggling to keep the conversation going. IMO Martellus goes to the well once too often with the random nonsense and doesn't seem to have much to say beyond that. Laurence made a reference to someone (can't remember who right now) and Martellus didn't know who he was talking about. The same thing happened on either B&B or W&S and it brought whatever topic they were talking about to a halt.

Maybe they need to have topic-driven segments to keep things moving and/or bring in another player each week for the last half hour? An hour and a half is a lot of time to fill.
