For the last week one of my daughters has been battling panic attacks. The first one scared the shit out of all of us. Every day since then she has had one. Does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to why or what brings them on. We have been to a doctor and got her on some meds and vitamin supplements. She is learning some breathing techniques to help cope with them while waiting for the meds to kick in. Such a helpless crappy feeling to watch one of your kids have something like that hit them and there be nothing you can do for them

I'm sorry about your daughter. Has anyone suggested maybe an hour a day just laying down and relaxing in a quiet room or maybe with some soft music. I think panic attacks occur when too much stimuli enters our heads and your brain goes on overload. I hope you find a solution, good luck.

I am sure that could not hurt.

From what I understand it is connected to the serotonin levels in the brain. When they get low or out of balance panic attacks can happen. The medicine is a SSRI which helps to set the level back normal.

It is wierd stuff.

Hopefully she is able to get it under control with the medicine.

5-HTP before bed at night helps with serotonin levels. You can buy it OTC at any Walgreen's or CVS.

Also, a bit of this always calms:

not for her, tho, for you.

Also, something high in carbs an hour before bed helps restore serotonin as well. A microwaved potato or even ice cream. Not healthy fitness wise, but v good for the serotonin levels.

Yes. I think of it as misfiring neurons.

Not a good idea to combine this with meds.

Sorry to hear that -- they do indeed suck. Hopefully you'll find something that works for her better than microwaving a potato.

Not yet. We will consider it as we move forward, but I have not had the time to research the options around here for that.

She started taking her meds on Friday. She had an attack Friday night but that has been the last one. Prior to that she had one every day for a week. So we are just trying to take our time and see what happens.

According to 80's TV, you just need a good supply of brown lunch bags for her to breathe in as someone cracks wise in the background

Good luck

I would highly recommend seeking one out. As I am sure you know, medication will alleviate the immediate attack but counseling will remedy the underlying issue.

Yeah. I have been researching a ton of stuff on this. And I am still not sure I understand all of it. If it is the level of serotonin in the brain that gets out of whack and has to be corrected, how is counseling going to keep that level in check in the future?

I am not against counseling at all, just not sure on how it all works for a situation like this. And on top of that it seems from my perspective that good counselors are hard to find. So it is not something to just jump into without working through all those things.

http://www.radiantrecovery.com/4r.htm

Quote:
Have a potato (with its skin) every night three hours after dinner. It will help your body raise your serotonin level and make you feel more confident, competent, creative and optimistic.

Quote:
The potato creates an insulin response that effects the movement of the amino acid tryptophan from your blood into your brain. Your body uses tryptophan to make serotonin, the brain chemical that makes you feel mellow and happy. Serotonin also helps you to "just say no" to sweets and other things by putting the brakes on your impulsivity.

Any of you know if when you get a blood test to examine thyroid problems if it would tell if their was iron deficiency. Been doing a lot of reading lately on panic and other health issues and it seems that a lot of people are diagnosed with panic and end up having an iron deficiency. The symptoms sound very similar to what my daughter is experiencing.
