Not really sure why you're arguing with me. My initial post summed it up pretty well. "That kid will also have seen a million beer commercials by the time they reach the legal drinking age, but everybody seems cool with that." Your reply to the thread "Absolutely. Not even mildly amusing" would lead me to believe that you see a problem with underage drinking so I'd think you too would agree that the pervasiveness of beer ads children and teens consume in there formative years is a bad thing™ for them. Unless you honestly think some beer commercials aren't marketed towards kids.

I read your quote to mean that the woman putting a beer bottle in the kid's mouth is okay since the child will see beer commercials anyway. If I misread your meaning, I apologize.

My people live in your neighborhood? I guess some of it is cultural. My family drinks more than my husband's. Never thought of it before but you are probably like him. Do you drink much?i wouldn't think you do.

I don't encourage it, but if they want to try what I have, I let them have a sip. The biggest drinkers I knew in hs and college were the strictest parents. When it comes down to it it's a choice and you hope they make the right ones. I didn't drink much in hs but my friends did.

It's not funny but I'm one of those people who also don't think it's cute when parents let their kids taste their beer/wine/alcoholic drink.

That kid will also have seen a million beer commercials by the time they reach the legal drinking age, but everybody seems cool with that.

Call me when there's a beer commercial marketed towards kids.

What age? I would definitely challenge that.

I'm no teetotaler. I don't treat drinking as sinful. I do not promote drinking. I have used this as just one example in the past, but the guys who pull the wagon holding beer as they take their kids trick or treating I think are an example of promoting a bad image. Now, sure you can enjoy one without an issue but is it really necessary and are you enjoying one when you have a cooler full of them...and the kids do notice. It just seems that for way to many, every social situation includes the consumption of alcohol. That's foreign to me and I want it to be foreign to my kids. At the same time they don't need to run from alcohol like it is some boogeyman one they reach an appropriate age.

Zero tolerance of it is an acceptable goal at this stage in our lives. That may sound strange to say as they are still young but I know plenty of people who recall drinking regularly in grade school.

and it isn't cultural, I was just being ignorant. There is alcohol abuse across every culture except where it is strictly banned.

Why do you have family in the neighborhood and never stop by?

I agree with dolphin's take and can back up his theory about a culture of drinking leading to earlier drinking.

I have 2 alcoholic parents and I'm only part Irish. I'd classify myself as more of a binge drinker than alcoholic... I dont need to drink but if I'm drinking look out!

I feel as if that has separated us from meeting again and it saddens me.
