Im in a place where it's not nearly as taboo as most offices, but Ive only had drinks during work a handful of times

My last day at my first job on the trading floor, my manager got me totally drunk.

An end of the day beverage is not frowned upon, moreso on a Friday.

I don't have a fridge in my office like some here do, though. I go Mad Men-style booze tray.

Yeah, a lot of guys I work with go for lunch drinks and sometimes just a break specifically for a drink

Back in my retail days, I would slug through a bloody mary or a screwdriver on Sunday mornings...did it when I was bartending too.

In an office environment, I can count on one hand how many times I had a lunchtime drink or the like.

On a side note, the IT guy at my old company used to make a habit of going home at lunch and just drinking for an hour. He'd come back a sloppy mess. He was really good at hiding it, and his boss never really gave a shit.

It's awesome. When America was a true world leader, everyone was drinking at work, or at least at lunch.

My buddy's law firm has a bar in the office with bar tables and flat screens. It's pretty sweet.

Frequently will grab a beer on my lunch break. I don't think anyone on my floor has any alcohol at their desk or office.

For breakfast? No.
For lunch? Sure.

It's not a big deal unless you are so drunk you can't work. It's not like on a Friday afternoon you are getting a lot done anyways.

What year, exactly, did it become taboo (SP?) to drink at lunchtime? Wife came downtown last week and we split a glass of prosecco at lunch.

It happened in my career around the time the lawyers made everyone think they were on the verge of a lawsuit for anything bad happening after lunch.

Possible random breathalizer/urine testing possible at any moment = no lunch beers for me. At least two people have been fired in the last nine years for trying to push the envelope in this arena.

When my partner and I are interviewing a guy, if we have someone we think is a good candidate, we usually take him out to lunch. I'll order a Johnnie Black and soda and my partner will ask for whatever craft beer he wants and we'll see what the guy does. I'm not looking for salesmen who are too fucking timid to get their drink on when they want to and I don't want to work with teetotalers either.

I'm not looking for a boss who is drinking whiskey 10 minutes after the interview has started.

To each their own though.

My boss only lets me drink at work if I stay in his office and hand him my car keys. Other bosses around the neighborhood may disapprove, but my boss would much rather help me control my work-drinking under his own roof.

why not Bon Vino's for slices and cheap drafts or Alcock's for some lines and shots?
Sky-Ride's a full-on, beer-and-a-shot dive bar, great place. Doesn't get very busy during the day anymore tho.

Before it started showing up at bars all over town, Stiegl Radler in the green bottle was a good choice for openly drinking
in the office. It looks and mostly tastes like a grapefruit drink. 2.5% alcohol content makes Radler ~Miller Lite alcohol wise

Law firm having a bar in the office is like a prison rec room. It's there because the folks inside can never leave to go to a real bar.

Damn, all this talk about day-drinking is making me thirsty.

I will have a couple drinks at our deadline celebration lunches, but never at the office. We load up. We party. Actually we get dressed up. We don't get high or anything.

I wouldn't know what to do here. I would think that you would be testing to see if I was a drinker, maybe the company had a policy on it, or if you could get somebody to subscribe to put pressure and groupthink. I'm not big on socializing at work though. I don't think of ever really done it.

If everyone else orders something, ordering a decent craft beer rather than a double whiskey neat and whatever domestic's on special is probably a safe way to go even if they are sorta testing your relationship to alcohol. You can break out the alkie special at happy hour once you've cleared the 3 month probation period.

Back in the loosey-goosey early '90s, it was still widespread in the insurance industry. I was being considered for an officer position and went to lunch with a member of senior management. Guy had been with the company forever. So he takes me to the University Club in Rockford and informs me how "the company frowns on drinking during business hours." Just then the waitress walks up asks "the usual, Mr. _____?" and she comes back with a double martini.
