What's the best internet tv box? Here's what I want and what I know. I want slingbox. Apparently only NeoMax has that. I want the NBA Ticket. Apparently Apple TV has that. I want ESPN 3 and MLB.tv. No clue on that. What box is best for what I want?

I have a Roku on one set and the Sony on another. I hardly ever use either but I think Roku has the NHL & NBA. I'm not sure about the Sony. I know neither have the NFL.

My personal favorite that I always recommend is the WD TV Live Hub. Biggest reason is that it will play files downloaded from the internet (1TB storage), and it can stream to other media boxes as well. It has Slingbox, Netflix, Hulu, Youtube.... but it does not have NBA ticket, or any of the other sports I don't think.

I have Apple TV's too, but those are more for screen sharing, and itunes music throughout the house. Apple TV can't store files, and doesn't have Slingbox. But it does have ESPN, MLB and NBA.

For the services you specifically listed, Apple TV makes the most sense, but it doesn't have Slingbox. The only way you could get it to work is if you have an iPhone/iPad and have the Slingplayer app... which you could then screenshare to the Apple TV.

cof- if you truly want full compatibility and future-proofing... buy something like this- http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Intel-Bo ... ooksize+pc

and just use the websites and desktop apps that are available for virtually every subscription package thats out there. anything less will only disappoint when you cant watch something you want to.

I actually don't know specifically, but it's HD. Maybe 720?

My Roku only does 720, but the newer models go up to 1080.

I actually don't know that from personal experience. IIRC, I believe Hulu gets SOME very quickly, but not all.

Again, another option there would be a screen-share with an iPad, as most major channels put the shows on the App very quickly.

If you want to get real techy, you could also set up a computer to record over the air shows for you.

This will soon be an option to help ease the pain of getting rid of cable. Pretty cool concept.

again, just to press this home, all of these questions are moot if you have a full powered windows computer. everything is in 1080p HD, everything passes through dolby digital dts, everything is available, and you can even get quad-tuner digital cable cards to watch and record all of your cable channels if you want to. 4 at a time.

rokus, apple tv's, boxee... its all great little devices that allow simple people to watch more crap... but if you have a desire to get one device and forget about it, then there is nothing like a windows pc. you can do anything with them, and any service that comes out almost always comes out on windows first.

Ike, I understand what you're saying but I love a device that gives me a specific app for espn 3 and sizes it correctly on my screen. I went with the Apple TV.

Short of a Windows PC, the list is mostly PS3, Blu Ray players and the set top boxes. My feeling is that a lot of the set top boxes will become obsolete over time.

exactly, or even if they dont there will always be a new service that comes out that wont be available. a windows computer has an 'app' for everything aside from some proprietary apple crap... just open a browser and go to the page, everything works perfectly.

It's possible they become obsolete, but that's why it's no big deal to drop $99 bucks on one now. You'll get your money's worth in the meantime.

You can get a Windows machine for under $300 that will not be obsolete.

computers are not like your comments

my htpc is 5 years old and showing no signs of age. when all you do is watch movies and listen to music on it, you dont need the latest hardware- especially when you can install new versions of windows and extend the useful life much further. gaming pc's are the ones that go obsolete every few years...

I downloaded Air Parrot and can now put my windows PC up on the apple TV wirelessly. I am officially cutting cable completely. I have my NBA tv, MLB TV and EsPN3, so I'm good.

What are you going to do for Cubs/Bulls games on CSN? I think they black them out since you are local.

I cheat on that one...I kept my dish slingbox and I'm slinging from a neighbor that works third shift.

I've looked into getting something to disguise my IP location, but I can't quite figure it out on my own.

Sports and HBO are really the only things tying me to cable right now.

HBO Plus is on Apple Tv.

IP disguises were things that I was looking into too, but it's above my pay grade as well.

I know there are other ways around cable, but I switched to WOW. You get the price locked in for 2 years. I pay 87 bucks for cable & internet, plus 1 cable box & 1 dvr. I still have my home phone. I swichted to MagicJack which works great.

yeah, I think eventually I'm going to get screwed on internet prices but for now I'm floating at $30/month. I don't have home phone so I'm saving a total of $50/month at least.

Now, the financial viability of live local streams will be tested, starting soon after the NBA opens its season later this month. its incredible all of the advertising revenue they waste to the black market just because they think blackout and cable restrictions force people to go to games.

people go to games because they want to go. everyone wants to watch the game from home.
